The school-book story sold a ladder. One ape climbs. One species wins. Everybody else is a dead end. Bones and genomes from the last twenty years wrecked that picture. When Homo sapiens showed up in Africa about 300,000 years ago, the planet already had other humans on it. For a long stretch after that, several kinds of human shared the same Earth. Some of them mixed with our ancestors. Their DNA is still sitting in people who buy groceries and pay taxes.
Scientists do not mean “races” the way 19th-century textbooks used the word. They mean separate lineages in the genus Homo — populations that split, lived apart for hundreds of thousands of years, then sometimes met again. Modern continental groups are recent branches inside one surviving species. The older story is a family that used to have more last names.
The ones with faces
Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) are the cousins everybody already knows. They held Europe and western Asia from roughly 400,000 years ago down to about 40,000. Stockier than us. Bigger midface. Cold-weather build. They made fire, cared for the injured, and left jewelry. Non-Africans still carry about 1 to 2 percent Neanderthal DNA. Later back-migration even put a sliver of it into African genomes. They did not vanish into a cartoon. They married into the winning line and then the separate population went quiet. We are all part Neanderthal.
Denisovans were a rumor with a pinkie bone. A finger fragment from Denisova Cave in Siberia, sequenced in 2010, proved a third human group as distinct from Neanderthals as Neanderthals are from us. Melanesians, Aboriginal Australians, and some Filipino groups still carry up to about 5 percent Denisovan DNA. Tibetans got a high-altitude gene from them that still works on the plateau. We humans have a way of adapting to any climate. When it was needed, we were many human races at once.
In June 2025 the rumor got a face. The Harbin “Dragon Man” skull from northeastern China — hidden in a well since 1933, named Homo longi in 2021 — matched Denisovan proteins and mitochondrial DNA pulled from dental calculus. Brain size sits in the modern human range, about 1,420 cubic centimeters. Asia finally has a skull to hang on the lineage that used to be a genome with no body.

Homo naledi lived in South Africa around 335,000 to 236,000 years ago, the same continent and the same era as early sapiens. Small brain. Odd mix of primitive and later traits. The Rising Star cave system produced more than a thousand bones. Some researchers argue they used fire and may have placed their dead deep in the dark. No DNA yet. No proof they mixed with us. They were still walking Africa while our own line was taking shape. Logic then is that we did mix with them. How could it be possible not to?
Homo floresiensis, the “hobbit” of Flores in Indonesia, stood about 3 feet 6 inches. Brain roughly a third of ours. Dates run from about 100,000 to 50,000 years ago. Homo luzonensis in the Philippines is another island form, known from teeth and small bones around 67,000 years ago. Isolation on islands shrinks bodies. It also keeps odd lineages alive long after the mainland has moved on. Late Homo erectus on Java may have lasted toward 100,000 years as well. The map of Wallacea was a human archipelago, not a single species marching east. Just imagine Frodo and friends in size and you get the picture.
Nesher Ramla Homo, named from a cement-quarry site in Israel in 2021, dates to about 140,000–120,000 years ago. Jaw and skull pieces sit between Neanderthal and older “Heidelberg” forms. They hunted, kept fire, and made the same style of stone tools as nearby sapiens. The discoverers treat them as late survivors of a Levantine population that fed both European Neanderthals and some East Asian groups. Other labs read the same bones as early Neanderthals. Either way, the Levant was a mixing floor, not a border.
Behind those names sit the older trunks: Homo erectus (the long-distance traveler, more than a million years on the clock), Homo heidelbergensis and the African rhodesiensis fossils, Homo antecessor in Spain, Homo habilis and Homo rudolfensis at the start of the genus. Some of those names will get merged. Some will split. The count is not a fixed museum plaque. It is a fight over bones that keep arriving.
The ones with no bones
The video’s real punch is the ghosts.
On July 30, 2026, a UC Berkeley team led by Priya Moorjani published a method called TRACE in the journal Science. It reconstructs ancient family trees from living genomes. No Neanderthal reference required. No Denisovan reference required. Applied to the 1000 Genomes Project, it recovered the known Neanderthal and Denisovan signals. Then it found two more.
The first ghost mixed with Homo sapiens in Africa more than 50,000 years ago, before the big Out-of-Africa pulse that stocked Europe, Asia, and Australia. That lineage split from our line about 800,000 years ago — the same deep window as the Neanderthal–Denisovan split. Every living person carries about 0.5 to 1 percent of it. Africans and non-Africans both have it. The team’s working guess is a Middle Pleistocene African population in the Homo heidelbergensis ballpark. There is still no named skeleton with a matching genome.

The second ghost is older. A “super-archaic” branch that split around 1.8 million years ago mixed with Denisovans in Eurasia more than 200,000 years ago. When Denisovans later mixed with sapiens, a thin slice of that ancient DNA rode along. It shows up most clearly in Oceanian genomes, tucked into immune and vitamin-D regions. Candidates include a late Homo erectus population. Again, no labeled fossil.
Add it up and roughly 2 percent of a typical living genome is archaic — Neanderthal, Denisovan, African ghost, and the older hitchhiker. The so-called “deserts” in our DNA, stretches that were supposed to be pure sapiens because they reject Neanderthal and Denisovan DNA, still hold the African ghost. Selection was picky. It did not ban every outsider.
Origins Explained also walks through side finds that sit in the same messy century: a 12,000-year-old Italian mother and daughter with a rare short-stature mutation, a 100,000-year-old Neanderthal community in a Polish cave, and mammoth kill sites stacked with females. The through-line is the same. Ancient DNA keeps finding people the dirt did not introduce first.
Why only one species is left
Around 300,000 years ago Africa likely held sapiens, naledi, and late erectus-grade groups at the same time. Eurasia held Neanderthals, Denisovans, Heidelberg leftovers, and the island dwarfs. By 40,000 years ago the separate populations were gone. Sapiens remains.
Chris Stringer and others have said the clock is ugly. Neanderthals vanish within a few thousand years of our people filling their range. Denisovans disappear on a similar schedule once sapiens is in Siberia and the Pacific rim. Climate swings, small isolated groups, and new diseases all get blamed. Contact with a larger, more networked species is the other line on the ledger. The genomes already prove the contact was not only war. It was also children.
That last point cuts against two cheap sermons. One sermon says we are a unique creation with no cousins. The bones and the alleles say otherwise. The other sermon says every human difference is a modern political invention. The older record says difference is the default. Separate human populations lived, looked, and thought in different packages for hundreds of millennia. Then they collapsed into one surviving species that still carries the others in fragments.
The honest reading is narrower and stranger. We are the last named humans. We are also a composite. If a lab can rebuild most of a ghost genome by stitching the scraps still sitting in eight billion people, those other humans did not fully leave. They got edited into the only line that kept a census. We are here, and they are with us, in our own DNA.
