Jonathan Turley read the new numbers and reached for Franklin. On the country’s 250th year, a party that spends every news cycle screaming about “democracy” just told pollsters it would feel good if the United States military threw out a twice-elected president and ran the government. This is real folks.
The survey came from the Center for Strategic Politics, working with the left-leaning shop Liberal Currents. The Left takes these groups seriously. They asked 683 Democratic voters how they would feel if they woke up to five different headlines about Donald Trump leaving office before the term ends. Field dates were Sept. 3 and Sept. 8–10. Margin of error: plus or minus 3.75 points. The coup line was dressed up as a civic duty. The exact scenario: military leaders remove Trump, assume control of the United States, and do it “to safeguard the Constitution.”
Fifty-nine percent said they would feel very or somewhat positive. Forty-three percent went “very.” Twenty-eight percent said negative. Thirteen percent shrugged. Add the shrug to the yes and you get 72 percent of Democrats who would not even be angry about a junta in the White House.
Impeachment and removal hit 87 percent positive. The 25th Amendment hit 84 percent. Trump dying in his sleep hit 55 percent. Assassination at a rally was the only option that finished underwater, and it still pulled a positive reaction from about three in ten. The pollsters’ own write-up put “support” for that last one at 29 percent. CSP posted the stack on X without blinking: four of five routes above water, including a military coup and death by natural causes. Is this not insane?
On X the reactions split the way they always do. Sen. Tommy Tuberville called it a mental-illness problem and listed the three numbers that matter: 32, 55, 59. Law professor John Banzhaf quoted Turley and Franklin in the same breath. Everyday accounts asked the question Democratic consultants will never put on a mailer: if a third of your party feels good about a rally assassination and six in ten feel good about soldiers seizing the government, why are you still in that party?
The framing is the tell. They did not ask, “Do you support a banana-republic putsch?” They asked how Democrats would feel if generals did the job and called it constitutional hygiene. The base answered like people who already decided the last election was illegitimate and the next one
The same poll wants the state behind the counter.
Turley flagged the economic half of the survey because it is the same voter, not a fringe caucus. Forty-six percent of those Democrats backed public ownership and operation of grocery stores. Thirty-nine percent wanted the same treatment for restaurants. Eugene Volokh sat with the restaurant number and noted the obvious: if you cannot see why a diner should stay private, you are not arguing about “fairness.” You are arguing about who gets to pick the menu.
Gallup dropped its own bomb the same week. Forty-three percent of Americans now view socialism positively, the first time that figure has cleared 39 percent in the trend that starts in 2010. Democrats sit at 65 percent positive on socialism. Republicans sit at 14 percent. Independents jumped to 45 percent. Inside the Democratic Party, capitalism is the loser: 35 percent positive. Socialism and “free enterprise” now tie among Democrats at 65. The word that built the country is the word the party likes less.
That is the program. Nationalize the checkout line. Cheer a military eviction of the president you lost to. Pack the Court. Kill the filibuster. The same CSP instrument found 69 percent of those Democrats want the Supreme Court expanded and 52 percent want the Senate filibuster gone. Majority support for locking up Trump officials came standard. A party that spent four years calling January 6 an “insurrection” just told a friendly pollster it would smile at an actual one if the uniforms pointed the right direction. They already quit the country.
The coup number is new. The patriotism collapse is not. We have seen for years how the Democrats want to destroy freedom, and replace it with woke racism against Whites, open borders, and all that the woke EU are doing to themselves, and what Biden and Obama were doing before Trump got back into the White House. NBC’s 2026 survey found 29 percent of Democrats “extremely” or “very” proud to be American. Republicans: 90 percent. Twenty-five years ago the Democratic number lived in the mid-80s. Same party label. Different country inside their heads.
Gallup’s 2025 read had Democrats at 36 percent extremely or very proud, down from 62 percent the year before when their man still had the desk. Republicans held in the low 90s. Elon University asked how people felt about America hitting 250 and got 18 percent of Democrats saying “proud.” Marist had Democrats at 45 percent proud against 93 percent of Republicans. YouGov had 58 percent of Democrats proud against 96 percent of Republicans, and 23 percent of Democrats willing to say they are not proud at all. Pick the house. The gap is a canyon.
YouGov’s flag test made it uglier. Democrats rated the Black Lives Matter flag a hair above the American flag. The Trump flag finished last with them, under the Confederate banner. A party that cannot fly the country’s flag without a lecture is a party that will not defend the country’s elections when the other side wins.
That is what “the end of the United States” looks like in polling. Not a press release that says “dissolve the Union.” A majority that treats the Constitution as nostalgia, the grocery store as a ministry, the flag as optional, and a military takeover as self-care. Harris and Newsom already called court-packing critics nostalgic. Turley noted the same word covers the shock at a coup. They said the quiet part. The poll put a number on it.
Keep them out.
The midterms are weeks away. Voter fraud is still in place. Democratic leaders are already floating impeachment as the prize if they take the House. The base just told them impeachment is the polite option. The impolite options poll fine too. A party that will feel “very positive” about generals seizing the government is a party that will feel very positive about every smaller vandalism on the way there: lawfare, speech codes, packed courts, nationalized shelves, open borders as moral theater. Voters who still like the republic do not owe that coalition another turn at the wheel. They lost a free election. Their answer is to skip the next one. Franklin’s line is not a museum plaque. It is the job description. Keep the republic. Do not hand the keys back to people who just said they would clap for a junta.
