Why Move To Texas or Other Red States From A Suffocating, Declining Blue State

Hundreds of thousands a year. Billions in income. One direction.

Every year the moving trucks roll the same way. Out of California. Out of New York. Out of Illinois, Washington, and New Jersey. Into Texas. Into Florida. Into Tennessee, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma. The people doing it are not writing think-tank papers about “regional realignment.” They are loading the kids, the tools, and the 401(k) because the state they live in has started treating them like inventory.

If you still live in one of those Democrat-run states and you wonder why your neighbor’s house has a U-Haul in the driveway, this page is the answer. Taxes first. Then the street. Then the school. Then the clinic. Then the ballot. Stay long enough and you are funding a machine that wants your paycheck, your daughter, and a vote you are not allowed to inspect.

MAGA families have a name for that arrangement. They call those jurisdictions slave states — states that extract labor through the tax code, extract the next generation through the school and the gender clinic, extract safety through sanctuary rules, and extract consent through an election system built to be unauditable. You can argue with the phrase. You cannot argue with the IRS file.

Leaving is still legal. That is the remaining freedom. Use it.

Blue State Exodus 2026: The Census and IRS Receipts

The Census Bureau’s domestic-migration estimates through June 2025 are brutal for the donor states.

California lost about 229,100 net domestic migrants in that year. New York lost about 137,600. Illinois lost about 40,000. New Jersey lost about 37,400. California’s loss alone is larger than the combined net gains of North Carolina, Texas, and South Carolina.

The growth states on the other side of the ledger:

    • North Carolina: +84,100
    • Texas: +67,300
    • South Carolina: +66,600
    • Tennessee: +42,400
    • Florida: +22,500

Texas is no longer the runaway first-place magnet it was in 2021 and 2022. Net domestic inflow into Texas has cooled for three straight years from a peak near 219,000. Florida cooled even harder. Say that out loud so the fact-checkers cannot pretend the page hid it. The direction did not reverse. California and New York are still the ATMs. Texas still added 391,243 total residents in 2024–25 once you count births and international arrivals. California posted a small total population drop in the same window after immigration collapsed and the domestic outflow kept chewing.

The IRS file is meaner than the headcount, because the IRS follows the money.

On the latest full state-to-state release covered through 2026, California lost about 100,400 tax households and $11.9 billion in adjusted gross income. New York lost about 72,000 households and $9.9 billion. Illinois shed about $6 billion. Texas gained about 56,500 households and $5.5 billion. Florida gained about 55,300 households and a staggering $20.6 billion. Florida did not need the biggest headcount. Florida took the taxable income.

The single largest corridor in that file is the one your cousin already ran: California to Texas, 44,417 households, average income about $107,000. After the reverse flow back to California, Texas still netted about 19,447 of those households. New York to Florida ran right behind it — 43,187 households at an average $133,000.

These were not broke movers. This was the tax base walking out of the room.

Washington State belongs in the same conversation even though it prints “no income tax” on the brochure. The Tax Foundation still ranks Washington 45th for tax competitiveness because of the sales-tax stack, the business taxes, and the capital-gains layer. People leave Seattle for the same reasons they leave San Jose and Brooklyn. Cost. Crime. Schools. A government that talks to them like a probation officer.

Whatfinger already flagged the wealth flight on the money desk. Read the Brenberg warning on the blue-state exodus: WATCH OUT: Brenberg sends a warning shot over the blue state exodus. Elon Musk said the quiet part on the transfer-payment game — California, New York, and Illinois leaning on federal Medicaid money, including for illegal aliens, to keep the books from blowing up. That clip lives here: Elon Musk on CA, NY, and IL Medicaid transfers.

Census domestic migration through June 2025. The donor states are on the left.

IRS households and taxable income. Florida took the money.

The main highway out of California.

Taxes in Democrat States vs Texas, Florida, and the No-Income-Tax Map

Start with the rate you can feel in April.

    • California top individual rate: 13.3%, plus the state disability layer.
    • New York: 10.9%, plus the New York City add-on if you are stuck in the five boroughs.
    • New Jersey: 10.75%.
    • Illinois: a 4.95% flat tax sitting on top of some of the highest property taxes in America.
    • Texas: 0% on wages.
    • Florida: 0%.
    • Tennessee: 0%.

The 2026 Tax Foundation State Tax Competitiveness Index ranks the whole machine, not one line on a W-2. New York finished 50th. New Jersey 49th. California 48th. Washington 45th. Illinois 38th. Florida finished 5th. Texas 7th. Tennessee 8th. North Carolina 13th. Georgia 18th.

A $250,000 W-2 household in California hands a second mortgage to Sacramento before the federal bill is even paid. The same household in Dallas or Tampa keeps that money. Over a decade the gap buys a house, a business, or the freedom to have a parent at home. That is why the U-Haul is not a lifestyle brand. It is arithmetic.

Democrats always answer with the property-tax line. Fine. Answer it.

New Jersey and Illinois sit at the top of the national effective property-tax list, in the 2.0% to 2.2% neighborhood. Texas runs high for a no-income-tax state, roughly 1.5% to 1.6% effective, because school districts live on the property roll. Florida is lower, near 0.8%, with a homestead shield. California looks “cheap” at about 0.7% only because Proposition 13 locked old assessments. New buyers do not get 1978 math. They get 2026 prices and a 13.3% income tax on the way out the door.

Sales tax finishes the stack. California’s combined state-and-local rate sits near the worst in the country. You pay when you earn, when you buy, and when you try to leave the city for groceries.

Governments that run this way need a permanent captive class. They need high earners who cannot move, retirees who will not move, and a clientele that votes for the next extraction. The second those high earners discover Zoom and a Texas homestead, the model cracks. That is the “Seattle-proofing” story and the “millionaires tax” story and the Bed Bath & Beyond story. Stores do not flee a paradise. They flee theft, mandates, and a tax collector who never blinks.

Whatfinger on the retail exodus: Bed Bath & Beyond flees California’s Marxist mess.

Tax Foundation 2026 Index. New York is last. Florida and Texas are in the top ten.

Sanctuary Governors, Soft Courts, and Criminals Put Back on Your Block

You can survive a high tax bill. You cannot un-do a robbery, a rape, or a killing the state had in custody last month.

California’s Proposition 47 turned theft under $950 into a misdemeanor franchise. Smash-and-grab became a business model. Retail chains published the closing list. San Francisco and Los Angeles spent years explaining to cameras that the empty shelves were a “perception” problem.

Sanctuary rules do the same job for people ICE wants. City and county jails in Democrat strongholds treat a federal detainer like optional mail. Agents end up making arrests in parking lots instead of at the booking desk. The public pays twice — once for the original crime, again for the one after the release.

New York City and Illinois run sister systems. The pattern is the same in Chicago, Newark, Seattle, and the New Jersey suburbs that still pretend they are not paying New York’s bill. Governors Newsom, Hochul, and Pritzker, and mayors in the Bass mold, talk about “dignity.” The family that lost a clerk, a daughter, or a husband is supposed to treat that speech as comfort.

Whatfinger has been logging the body count and the policy:

    • The deadly consequences of Democrat-led sanctuary policies
    • EXCLUSIVE: ICE serves a warrant in the blue-state crackdown
    • A state hospital handed an accused killer a weekend pass

Tren de Aragua crews in apartment buildings. Repeat offenders flipped back onto the same block. Detainers ignored. That is the public-safety offer from the states people are fleeing. Texas and Florida still make arrests like they mean them. That gap, by itself, moves families.

California, New York, and Illinois Act Like They Own Your Kids

This is the section that ends the argument in a kitchen.

A state that hides a child’s new name from the mother, then shields the clinic from the father in another state, has claimed ownership of the child. MAGA parents do not treat puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries on minors as “care.” They treat them as a political project that ends in sterility, sexual dysfunction, and a medical record no honest doctor can unwind.

Here is what the statutes actually do. Read them before a blue-check tells you nobody is touching your kid.

California AB 1955 (2024). Newsom signed the bill that blocks school districts from forcing notification to parents when a child socially transitions at school. The school can run the new name and the new pronouns. The parent can find out last. Conservatives called it the secrecy bill because that is the function.

California SB 107 (2022) and SB 497 (2025). California declared itself a sanctuary for the youth gender protocol. The state will not honor certain out-of-state custody orders aimed at stopping that protocol. Providers are shielded from sister-state punishment. Later language tightened the gag on medical records even when another state — or, in the 2025 expansion, a federal request — comes looking. A father who leaves Texas to retrieve a daughter does not get California’s help. He gets California’s wall.

California AB 495. Already covered on Whatfinger’s Choice Clips: an expansion of who can stand in as caregiver. The official story is immigrant families and deportation. The conservative read is a wider on-ramp for non-parents to claim “care, custody, and control.” Read the piece: Democrats’ assault on parental rights and Newsom’s AB 495.

Minors 12 and older in California can consent to a wide band of outpatient mental-health treatment without a parent. Hormones and surgery still sit under parental consent inside the state on paper. The live fight is the school secrecy plus the shield against the parent who says no.

New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington. All sit in the sanctuary / shield column on the KFF and statutory trackers. The shield runs one direction. A parent who wants the protocol is protected from the other state’s attempt to stop it. A parent who refuses the protocol is the person the statute was written to freeze out.

The rest of the country went the other way. The KFF tracker, updated through 2026, counts 27 states that limit youth access to the medical protocol. On June 18, 2025, the Supreme Court in United States v. Skrmetti let Tennessee’s ban stand. Texas has treated the protocol as child abuse at the governor’s direction. Florida already fought the medical boards and the clinics. In August 2026, CMS finalized a rule cutting federal Medicaid and CHIP money for puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender surgeries on minors, effective mid-October 2026. Blue states can still spend state dollars. That is the fork in the road. One America funds the protocol. The other America stopped.

Custody cases put flesh on the statute. In Massachusetts, Joseph and Arlene Kutzko say the state took their 17-year-old daughter after a school complaint and kept administering the protocol against the parents’ will, with no finding that the parents were unfit. That is one family in one blue jurisdiction. It is also the destination of the ideology. Once the school, the counselor, and the child-welfare office agree that “affirmation” is the only safe answer, the parent who says no becomes the danger.

Dedicated Issues has been watching the school piece too. New York City homeschooling is exploding because parents got tired of the classroom as a recruitment hall. See the Dedicated Issues file on that surge and the related school fights on dedicatedissues.com.

If you have a daughter in a California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, or Washington district, you are in a custody dispute with the state whether you filed paperwork or not. The cleanest way to win that dispute is to change the jurisdiction.

Shield states vs the 27 states that limited the youth protocol.

No ID, Universal Mail, and Why MAGA Calls These Elections a Closed Shop

A one-party state that mails a ballot to every name on a swollen roll, refuses a photo ID, and treats every audit as an attack is not running a competitive republic. Democrats in Sacramento and Albany do not need to win the argument if they can win the count by any margin they please.

    The rules, as of 2026:

California. No photo ID at the polls for almost everyone. Every registered voter is mailed a ballot. In 2024, Gavin Newsom signed SB 1174, which banned cities and counties from adding a local voter-ID rule. The state locked the barn from the inside.

New York. No photo ID. Sign the book. No-excuse absentee.

Illinois. No photo ID. An affidavit of eligibility.

New Jersey. No photo ID for most voters.

Texas and Florida. Photo ID at the polls.

June 2026 in Los Angeles put the argument on television. After the mayoral primary, videos from Skid Row featured people saying they were paid a few dollars to sign forms and vote. The FBI sent agents into the district. A separate federal case charged a Honduran lawful permanent resident in the San Fernando Valley with fraudulent voter registration after he claimed U.S. citizenship on the form. Those are real doors in a no-ID, mass-mail system.

A separate viral chart claimed one night-of dump gave Karen Bass and Nithya Raman tens of thousands of new votes and Spencer Pratt zero. The Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, and even Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said that particular update was a staggered website pull, not a zeroed-out Republican. Put that on the record so this page cannot be dismissed as the Facebook version of the night. The open door is the law. The Skid Row probe is the warning. The “zero votes” chart was a bad exhibit.

MAGA readers look at California, New York, and Illinois and see a closed shop. Same party. Same mail-ballot factory. Same refusal to require a face and a card. Same media chorus calling every integrity bill “voter suppression.” If it were still illegal to leave, those states would function as soft dictatorships with branded elections. It is still legal to leave. That is why the trucks keep rolling.

The national fix is a citizenship check and a photo ID standard that Sacramento cannot nullify. The family fix is a new address in a state that already requires the card.

The states people flee do not ask for a photo. The states they land in do.

When the State Owns Your Money, Your Child, and the Count

Call it what the base already calls it.

A slave state, in this telling, is a jurisdiction that:

    1. Takes the fruit of your work at rates the Tax Foundation ranks in the national basement. 2. Turns the school into a pipeline that can hide a child’s identity from the parent who pays the property tax. 3. Shields the clinic that would put that child on drugs and under a knife. 4. Releases the offender and lectures the victim about root causes. 5. Runs an election that cannot be inspected by the people who live under it.

Newsom in Sacramento. Hochul in Albany. Pritzker in Springfield. The Murphy machine in Trenton. The Seattle-Olympia apparatus in Washington. Bass in Los Angeles. The new New York City era that talks sanctuary like scripture. They do not need a secret police if they have the tax code, Child Protective Services, the teachers union, and a mailed ballot.

You still have a U-Haul and a forwarding address. That is the off-ramp.

Talk of a new Civil War is rage. It is the sound a free people make when they watch a daughter disappear into a protocol and a prosecutor shrug at a repeat offender. Rage is not a plan. The plan that already works is the one on the IRS map. Move. Then vote in a state that still acts like the parent is the parent. Then back a federal standard so Sacramento cannot export the model through the schools and the nonprofits.

If leaving were banned tomorrow, the MAGA charge would write itself: fake elections, captured courts, children treated as state property. Leaving is not banned. Every month you stay is a month you fund the thing you claim to hate.

Send this to the relative still writing checks to Newsom and Hochul.

Texas, Florida, Tennessee, the Carolinas — What You Actually Get

Do not sell a postcard. Sell the trade.

Texas. No wage income tax. Jobs. Space. A Republican government that still talks like a government. Photo ID. A live fight to keep the youth gender protocol out of the clinic. Property tax is real. Insurance and housing in Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston are not 2019 prices. Net domestic in-migration cooled to about 67,000 in the year to June 2025. Texas is still a magnet. It is no longer a free lunch. Bring your politics with you and Frisco starts sounding like Orange County in 2018. Do not do that.

Florida. No wage income tax. The biggest AGI haul in the IRS file. Parental-rights statutes already on the books. Education fights already fought. Photo ID. Insurance and HOA bills after the insurance crisis will test your patience. Domestic in-migration slowed to about 22,500. The money kept coming anyway. Retirees and remote high earners still vote with a southbound truck.

Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma. The second wave. Lower drama than Austin. Better land prices than Miami. Watch the school board the week you arrive. The ideology rides in the same U-Haul as the sectional sofa.

    Practical box, short.

    • File the homestead. Texas and Florida homestead rules are the point of the move.
    • Quit the old state income-tax account the right way. Part-year rules exist so California can take one last bite.
    • Move the professional license early. Nursing, contracting, teaching — the lag will punish you.
    • Cars, guns, kids’ records. Change the registration. Know the new state’s carry rules. Pull the school file in writing before the old district “loses” the name-change paperwork.
    • Do not arrive and vote for the same policies that emptied the last zip code.

    Why They Left

A teacher out of LAUSD: the classroom became a pronoun seminar and a lockdown drill, and the district still could not keep a door locked.

A tradesman out of Cook County: the property-tax bill grew faster than the jobs, and the same block kept recycling the same offenders.

A family out of Brooklyn: tuition for a school that hid a child’s identity, plus a subway they stopped riding after dark.

A nurse out of Newark: the hospital preached equity and ran short of staff because the staff had already moved to Charlotte.

A tech couple out of Seattle: no official “income tax,” an effective tax stack that felt like one, and a downtown they would not walk after 8 p.m.

If that is your story, send it. Dedicated Issues will run the best letters as a part two. The comments are open. The map is not theoretical. It is your sister’s new zip code.

FAQ: Why Move to Texas From California, New York, and the Other Blue States

How many people move from California to Texas each year? The latest IRS corridor count is 44,417 households from California to Texas, average income about $107,000, with a net to Texas of about 19,447 after the reverse flow. Census person-counts run higher than household counts. The direction is stable even after the post-2021 boom cooled.

Does Texas have higher property taxes than California? On a statewide effective-rate comparison, Texas runs higher than California’s Prop 13 average. California still takes the larger total bite through the 13.3% top income tax, high sales tax, and 2026 purchase prices that do not get 1978 assessments. Illinois and New Jersey are worse than both on property tax.

Why did Florida gain so much income if fewer people moved last year? Domestic headcount into Florida slowed to about 22,500 net in the year to June 2025. The last full IRS file still showed about $20.6 billion in inbound AGI. High earners and retirees can move fewer households and still move a lot of taxable income.

Can a California school hide a gender change from parents? AB 1955 blocks districts from being forced to notify parents about a social transition at school. SB 107 and SB 497 build the sanctuary wall around the medical protocol and the records. That is the current law.

Does California require voter ID? No photo ID for nearly all voters. Every registered voter is mailed a ballot. SB 1174 banned local governments from adding an ID rule.

What is a shield law? A statute that blocks other states from punishing providers or parents who put a minor on the gender protocol, and that refuses to honor certain out-of-state custody or subpoena demands. California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey, and Washington sit in that column.

Is the blue-state exodus over? No. The peak years of 2021–2022 are over. California and New York are still net donors. Texas, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia are still net gainers. The IRS income numbers remain ugly for the blue side.

Is Washington really a “blue tax state” if it has no wage tax? Yes. The Tax Foundation ranks Washington 45th overall. High sales taxes, business taxes, and a capital-gains layer do the work an income tax would do. People still leave.

The Only Vote They Cannot Rig Is the One Where You Change Your Address

You can stay and fund it. You can stay and fight county by county, school board by school board, and lose a decade doing it. Or you can take the children, the tools, and the retirement account to a state that still acts like a parent is a parent and a taxpayer is not a vein to be tapped.

Hundreds of thousands already made the call. The IRS logged the income. The Census logged the bodies. The moving trucks do not care about Gavin Newsom’s next press conference, Kathy Hochul’s next speech, or a Los Angeles mail ballot that never saw a face.

Why move to Texas, Florida, Tennessee, or the Carolinas from a suffocating, declining blue state? Because you are no longer a free citizen if the government that taxes you also claims your child and counts your vote in the dark. Leave while the gate is open.
