A Mississippi grand jury has unanimously declined to charge anyone over the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, finding no evidence that a crime occurred or that his disappearance was racially motivated. Wells vanished during a crowded July 4 gathering on Horn Island after traveling there with friends, and his body was recovered in the water two days later. Photographs showing the Black teenager surrounded by white friends fueled months of online speculation, while his family and civil-rights attorney Ben Crump pressed for greater transparency and an independent investigation.
The grand jury issued 132 subpoenas, received information from 43 witnesses and reviewed physical evidence, forensic reports, videos, GPS records and cellphone data. Its report said the position, condition, discovery time and location of Wells’ body were consistent with drowning. However, both the state medical examiner and a private pathologist retained by the family officially classified the cause and manner of death as undetermined. The family disputes the grand jury’s conclusion, pointing to unexplained bruising and alleged blunt-force injuries, and is requesting a federal investigation. The current finding is that the evidence does not support criminal charges—not a definitive medical ruling that every unanswered question has been resolved.
