    KITTY HAWK, ROUND TWO: Joby Crossed America on Autopilot. The Air Taxi Race Just Changed Lanes.

    It is not long before we not only have Tesla and other company taxis dominating the roads, as well as drones and automated taxis and planes taking to the air. The tech is finally here! – A converted Cessna Caravan left Concord, California, and landed on the Outer Banks of North Carolina with the safety pilot’s hands off the controls the entire way. Joby Aviation called it the first fully autonomous flight across the United States. The announcement landed September 18. The plane had already done the miles.

    This was a workhorse turboprop running Joby’s Superpilot stack — the autonomy kit Joby bought with Xwing in 2024 — and it taxied, took off, cruised, rerouted around thunderstorms, and landed while supervisors in Santa Cruz and at Shaw Air Force Base watched from as far as 2,323 miles away. Distance on the eastbound leg: 3,199 miles. Pilot inputs: zero. The airplane then made a low pass over the Wright memorial at Kitty Hawk and parked at Dare County Regional.

    JoeBen Bevirt, Joby’s founder, sold the usual future-of-flight line about remote towns, disaster freight, and keeping pilots out of harm’s way. The more useful sentence is the one the Pentagon already understands. In Air Force exercise Agile Flag, Joby said the same stack cut conventional parts delivery by 24 hours. In REFORPAC, crews in Guam ran aircraft in Hawaii from nearly 4,000 miles out. Shaw got a live look during this tour. Fort Worth Alliance got the freight pitch on the same week Joby flew its first eIPP air-taxi demo in Texas.

    The westbound return is already on the board: Raleigh, the Washington area, Louisville, Wichita, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Portland.

    The crossing in one frame

    That Caravan is the tell. The flying-taxi companies spent a decade promising Manhattan in twelve minutes. The first thing that actually crossed a continent without a human on the stick is a 1980s-design cargo airplane with new brains. The commercial money is following that pattern.

    The field, without the press-release fog

    Joby still leads the American certification stack. The S4 air taxi — pilot plus four, about 100 miles, 200 mph cruise — is in Stage 5 of the FAA’s five-stage powered-lift process. A conforming aircraft, N547JX, started flying in March. Five ships are in the air. Twelve more sit in production. Toyota is inside the factory plan. Delta is the airline partner. Blade gives Joby actual passenger-helicopter revenue while the electric machine waits. Liquidity at June 30: about $2.3 billion. 2026 revenue guide sits at $115–125 million, most of it Blade, not air-taxi tickets. Market cap has settled near $6.4 billion after the 2025 run-up.

    Do not write “Joby is certified.” It is not. A June rumor that the FAA had already issued a type certificate does not match Joby’s own summer filings. As of late July the company said it had finished about 20 percent of Stage 5 work, with the FAA at 10 percent. That is the front of the pack. It is still a pack that has not crossed the line.

    Archer is the other public name that matters. Midnight is through Phase 3 of Archer’s four-phase FAA path and into Phase 4. United wants airport hops. Stellantis is the production partner. The LA28 Olympics are on the marketing calendar. Cash at midyear: about $1.56 billion. Then came the August 10 deal: Archer takes Boeing’s Wisk Aero, the Insitu drone shop, and SkyGrid airspace software. Boeing walks out with roughly a 16.5 percent stake and a board seat. Three years after Wisk sued Archer for stealing secrets, Archer owns Wisk. That is how the second-place American player just bought an autonomy stack and a defense revenue line in one filing.

    Beta Technologies skipped the urban-taxi beauty contest and certified like a cargo company. ALIA has piled up more than 200,000 nautical miles, a 130-plus site charger network, UPS paper, Air Force work, and a hybrid military logistics drone, the MV250, shown at Farnborough with a GE turbine and Sikorsky MATRIX autonomy. Loganair is lined up to put ALIA on Scottish routes. Beta’s bet is ugly and practical: batteries and charging first, passengers after the freight pays.

    China already sold tickets. EHang’s two-seat EH216-S holds CAAC type, production, and operator paper and has flown paid sightseeing loops in Guangzhou, Hefei, and Shenzhen. That is the only pilotless passenger eVTOL service on Earth that regulators have actually blessed. It is also the service that just hit a wall. EHang withdrew 2026 revenue guidance in August after Beijing slowed passenger approvals following an unrelated light-sport crash. AutoFlight is the piloted Chinese hedge. The low-altitude economy is real. The scale is still tourist hops, not a city network.

    Europe’s glamour names are the cautionary slide. Lilium went insolvent. Volocopter got rescued and shrunk. Vertical Aerospace’s market value has been beaten down toward its cash. Eve, the Embraer affiliate, has a pre-order book and a smaller war chest. The Western race narrowed to Joby, Archer, and Beta. Everyone else is either Chinese, a supplier, or a tombstone.

    Certification is a furnace. Joby lost $930 million in 2025. Archer burned hundreds of millions a quarter. The companies that remain are the ones that can write those checks without selling equity into a panic. Joby’s $2.3 billion pile is the thickest. Archer’s $1.56 billion plus a Boeing partnership is enough if the Wisk close happens on time. Eve is in the $400 million neighborhood. Vertical is living on financing packages measured in the low hundreds of millions. That ranking will decide who is still flying when the FAA finally stamps a type certificate.

    What actually sells

    Two products share one ticker at Joby, and now at Archer.

    Product one is the air taxi. Dubai is Joby’s first intended paying market under a multi-year RTA exclusive. Archer is aiming at Abu Dhabi under a restricted type-certificate path. The United States has the White House eVTOL Integration Pilot Program across 26 states. Texas already saw Joby fly Alliance to DFW in September. Those are demos and sandbox routes. Full U.S. scheduled service still needs a type certificate, a production certificate, airworthiness tickets on every hull, powered-lift pilots, and a Part 135 operating certificate. Honest calendars put real American passenger service in 2027–28, not this Christmas.

    Product two is autonomy on aircraft that already exist. A Caravan that can haul freight from a military ramp without a pilot on the yoke does not wait on a new vertiport in Queens. Defense logistics, medical runs, and remote-community freight clear a lower political bar than a four-seat electric machine over a schoolyard. Archer just paid for that future with Boeing stock. Beta built it from the start. Joby just flew it coast to coast.

    The market-size slide decks still throw around Morgan Stanley’s old trillion-dollar 2040 talk. The same shop later slashed its 2030 U.S. estimate by about 75 percent, down to $12 billion, once it priced in certification. Treat the TAM poetry as poetry. The contracts that exist today are defense exercises, cargo LOIs, Gulf launch deals, and helicopter-replacement routes into airports.

    Two businesses, one ticker

    The bottlenecks nobody puts on the cover

    Batteries still cap range. Vertiports are zoning fights. Noise rules will decide which cities say yes. Insurers have not priced a pilotless passenger hull. Robert Wilkos at VIPJets put the private-aviation version on paper: move the accountability from “crew in the cockpit” to “software plus a guy in California,” and the liability market gets conservative in a hurry. Regulators will demand more proof to cut a crew than the companies want to admit. A safety pilot who never touches the stick is still a safety pilot. The FAA has not erased him.

    China will keep flying tourists under a different legal system. The Gulf will buy the first Western seats because the sheikhs can stand up a vertiport without a ten-year environmental review. America will certify slower and, if the Pentagon keeps writing checks, commercialize the ugly missions first.

    That is the race as of the third week of September 2026. Joby owns the headline and the deepest FAA file. Archer just swallowed Boeing’s autonomy shop. Beta is flying cargo miles while the others argue about Manhattan. EHang sold tickets first and then watched Beijing tap the brakes. Lilium is a warning label.

    The Wright brothers needed 120 feet. Joby needed a continent and a remote operator. The airplane that did it still had a man in the seat, sitting on his hands. The next fight is whether anyone lets him get out.
