Hancock’s Pyramid Clip Leaves Out the Foreman
The Great Pyramid is supposedly 4,500 years old and still the best stonework on the Giza plateau. Graham Hancock’s viral Diary of a CEO clip treats a near-miss times table as proof the builders already knew the size of the Earth. Or, at least this is what ‘scientists’ and anthropologists representing Egyptologists. Archaeometrists / archaeological scientists — the lab people and Geoarchaeologists and geologists — they study the stone are currently saying.
Steven Bartlett sat Graham Hancock down and let him walk the Great Pyramid. The clip that came out of it — The SHOCKING Truth About The Pyramids No One Tells You — is doing numbers again. (see above) Hancock’s line is simple. Take the height of Khufu’s pyramid and multiply by 43,200. You get the polar radius of the Earth. Measure all four sides, multiply by the same number, and you get the equatorial circumference. Knowledge no Fourth Dynasty Egyptian was supposed to have. Inherited, he says, from a civilization the ice and the flood erased.
The pyramid can carry that kind of story because the stonework is real. The mystery of it all still creates debate across the world.
Original height: about 146.6 meters, 280 royal cubits. Each side: about 230.3 meters, 440 cubits. The four faces differ by centimeters. The 13-acre base is level to a couple of centimeters. The sides point to true north within three to four minutes of arc. Flinders Petrie measured that in the 1880s. J.H. Cole confirmed it in 1925. Later surveys held.
That alignment did not need a satellite. Kate Spence showed in Nature in 2000 that two circumpolar stars — Mizar and Kochab — lined through the pole around 2470 B.C. Hang a plumb line from a merkhet. Wait for the vertical. Mark the ground. The small errors on Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure drift the way precession would if the same pair was used a generation apart.
The 43,200 scale is the part the clip sells as a revelation.
Take the accepted original height, 146.6 meters. Multiply by 43,200. You get 6,333 kilometers. Earth’s polar radius is 6,357. Twenty-four kilometers short.
Take the base perimeter, about 921 meters. Same multiplier. You get 39,801 kilometers. Equatorial circumference is 40,075. Off by 274 kilometers.
Hancock and the clip pages pick a taller height or a longer side until the slogan tightens. 43,200 also happens to be 72 times 600, so it can be hung on the precession cycle of 25,920 years. The number was chosen after the answer was known.
The pyramid’s own geometry already approximates pi. Four hundred forty cubits on a side, 280 high. Perimeter over height sits near 2π. Earth is a sphere. Give any circle a free multiplier in the forty-thousands and you can make it map a planet. No Old Kingdom text says the architects surveyed the globe. Eratosthenes ran that measurement two thousand years later with a stick and a well at Syene.
The latitude line is the other parlor trick. Giza sits at 29.979 degrees north, close to 30, a third of the way from the equator to the pole if you like the phrasing. Memphis was the capital. The plateau had limestone. The inundation filled the canals. The viral match between that latitude and the speed of light in meters per second uses a unit the builders never heard of. The meter was defined in 1791.
What they did leave is a logbook.
In 2013, at Khufu’s Red Sea harbor of Wadi al-Jarf, Pierre Tallet’s team pulled papyri out of a rock-cut gallery. Inspector Merer, year 27 of Khufu, ran a crew of about 40. They cut white casing stone at Tura and floated it to a place he names Akhet Khufu — Horizon of Khufu. Load at Tura. Night at She-Khufu. Deliver to the pyramid. Turn around. Two or three trips every ten days.
The workers ate cattle. Their town still sits at Heit el-Ghurab. Overseers were buried with titles. Ankhhaf, Khufu’s half-brother, shows up as chief of the king’s works. Gang names in red ochre inside the relieving chambers call themselves Friends of Khufu and The White Crown of Khnum-Khufu is Powerful.
The remaining arguments are engineering. How they walked 50- and 80-ton Aswan granite beams into the King’s Chamber. What the 30-meter void above the Grand Gallery is for — ScanPyramids published that cavity in Nature in 2017. Why the bedrock chamber a hundred feet under the pyramid looks unfinished. Hancock calls that unfinished cut the original sacred site on the plateau. Those questions are open. They do not require a lost seafaring culture that already knew the polar radius and then forgot to write it down.
Sneferu built a pyramid that bent because the angle was too steep, then built a better one next door. Khufu inherited a craft that had already failed in public. That is how a kingdom learns to stack six million tons.
Hancock is right that the slave-and-whip cartoon is garbage. The clip still sells a scale factor as a civilization. These mysteries of the pyramid and the possibility of lost, advanced civilizations are picking up steam on the internet. Partly also thanks to Joe Rogan and the Diary of a CEO. Since we have seen how the media plays with the facts and lies to our faces even about the 2020 election, a mere six years ago, you can see how the fog of time can make the true facts unknown to us all. Perhaps for all time.
