The event that actually hits American families is a multi-day outage, a storm, a boil-water notice, or a road home that is jammed. Plan for that first. EMP novels can wait until the water jugs are full.
Official first stops
- Ready.gov — https://www.ready.gov/
- Build a kit — https://www.ready.gov/kit
- Make a plan — https://www.ready.gov/plan
- American Red Cross preparedness — Red Cross emergencies
- FEMA mobile app — FEMA app / text alerts
Rule of threes (field memory, not a religion): minutes without air · hours without shelter in bad weather · days without water · weeks without food.
Write names, meds, blood types, and phone numbers on paper. Your phone is a flashlight that dies.
Weekend starter (do this before you buy a generator)
- One gallon of water per person per day, two weeks if you can store it
- A week of food you already eat
- Flashlights, batteries, a NOAA radio
- Copies of IDs and a little cash
- A real first-aid kit plus any prescriptions
- A way to cook without the grid (camping stove + fuel, stored safe)
- Know if you stay or go for the hazards where you live
Free manuals (print them)
Knowledge weighs nothing and cannot be looted. Download now. Keep a paper copy in a bag.

Water
You last three days without water. In heat or with kids, it feels shorter. Store it. Filter it. Know the bleach math. Do not trust a pretty creek.
Ready.gov and public-health desks still use one gallon per person per day for drinking and basic hygiene. Two weeks for a family of four is 56 gallons.
Official: ready.gov/water · EPA disinfection: EPA · CDC: CDC
Store it
- Food-grade jugs, drums, or stackable bricks. Not random milk jugs that split.
- Cool, dark, off concrete if you can.
- Rotate commercially bottled water by the printed date. For filled jugs, dump and refill on a calendar (every 6–12 months is common household practice).
- Keep a wrench for the water heater drain. That tank is a hidden reserve if the incoming valve still holds.
- Water brick 3.5 gallon — Amazon
- 7-gallon Aqua-Tainer — Amazon
- 55-gallon food-grade drum — Amazon
- WaterBOB bathtub liner — Amazon
Filter vs purify
Filter (Sawyer class): bacteria, protozoa, sediment. Fine for most U.S. backcountry streams. Not a virus tool. Not a chemical tool.
Purifier (Grayl class, boil, chlorine dioxide): viruses too. Use this thinking for floodwater, sewage-tainted urban water, and some international travel.
Boil: rolling boil. Simple. Needs fuel. Chemical: use unscented regular household bleach and the EPA table. Do not invent ratios.
- Sawyer Squeeze — Amazon
- Sawyer Mini — Amazon
- Grayl GeoPress — Amazon
- LifeStraw (last-ditch sip, not a family plan) — Amazon
- Aquamira drops — Amazon
- Chlorine dioxide tablets — Amazon
- CNOC / extra squeeze bags — Amazon
- Unscented household bleach — Amazon
Backflush the Sawyer. A clogged filter is a paperweight. Rain barrels and well hand-pumps are the long game. Surface water is a backup, never a first sip. Print FM 3-05.70 water chapters from the manuals desk.
Food & cooking
A week of food you already cook beats a closet of mystery lasagna you will hate on day two. Build 72 hours, then 30 days, then 90 if you have the space.
Official: ready.gov/food · USDA canning: NCHFP
Staples that store: white rice, dried beans, oats, pasta, salt, sugar or honey, cooking oil, peanut butter, canned meat/fish/fruit/veg, powdered milk if your people will drink it.
Convenience that earns its keep: freeze-dried pouches for the bag, coffee/tea, hard candy, electrolyte packets. Rotate. First in, first out. Write dates with a Sharpie.
- White rice 25 lb — Amazon
- Dried pinto beans 20 lb — Amazon
- Old-fashioned oats — Amazon
- Mountain House — Amazon
- Augason / emergency buckets (read calorie math, not the “days” marketing) — Amazon
- Datrex / SOS ration bars — Amazon
- Mylar + 300cc oxygen absorbers — Amazon
- Food-grade buckets with gamma lids — Amazon
Cook with no grid
Outdoor propane stove is the common American answer. Carbon monoxide from indoor use of the wrong stove is how families die during ice storms. Read the label. Own a manual can opener. It is the #1 missing tool in after-action kits.
- Coleman classic 2-burner — Amazon
- 1-lb propane cylinders — Amazon
- MSR PocketRocket-class stove — Amazon
- P-38 / heavy can opener — Amazon
- Presto / All American pressure canner — Amazon
- Ball jars + lids — Amazon
- Heirloom garden seed vault — Amazon
Foraging is a supplement. Eat only what you can identify cold. Print the plant chapters in FM 21-76. Store pet food too.
Medical
Two problems. Everyday illness with no pharmacy. Bleeding that does not wait for an ambulance. Build both kits. Take a class. This desk is a library, not a diagnosis.
- Stop the Bleed — stopthebleed.org · find a class
- Red Cross First Aid / CPR / AED — take a class
Household kit
- Gloves, gauze, tape, elastic bandage, antiseptic, blister care
- Pain / fever meds your family can take, antihistamine, hydrocortisone, antidiarrheal, antacid
- Tweezers, shears, thermometer, spare glasses
- Prescriptions: ask the prescriber about an emergency extra. Insulin and fridge power is its own project.
- Adventure Medical Kits family / mountain — Amazon
- Nitrile gloves 100-pack — Amazon
- SAM splint + triangular bandage — Amazon
- Oral rehydration packets — Amazon
Trauma / IFAK
MARCH is the order many instructors use: Massive bleeding, Airway, Respiration, Circulation, Hypothermia / Head. Learn it in a class.
Minimum IFAK: one proven tourniquet (two is better), pressure bandage, hemostatic gauze from a known brand, chest seals (pair), gloves, trauma shears, marker for the time on the TQ.
- NAR CAT Gen 7 — Amazon (verify NAR / seller)
- SOF Tourniquet — Amazon
- Israeli / emergency pressure bandage — Amazon
- QuikClot Combat Gauze — Amazon
- Hyfin / HALO chest seals — Amazon
- NAR-style filled IFAK — Amazon
- Trauma shears — Amazon
- 3M Aura N95 — Amazon
- Bucket toilet / waste bags — Amazon
Books: Where There Is No Doctor · Survival Medicine Handbook
Power & light
The grid fails in ice, heat, wind, and cyber news cycles. Light and heat keep people calm. Carbon monoxide is how you lose them.
- Ready.gov power outages — ready.gov/power-outages
- CPSC carbon monoxide — CPSC CO center
Put generators outside, far from windows. Battery stations do not make CO. That is why apartments buy them. A $30 headlamp in every adult bedroom beats one fancy lantern in the garage.
- Petzl Actik Core headlamp — Amazon
- Midland ER310 NOAA radio — Amazon
- Kidde combo smoke/CO — Amazon
- Anker 20,000 mAh power bank — Amazon
- Jackery Explorer 300 — Amazon
- EcoFlow River 2 Pro — Amazon
- 100W folding solar — Amazon
- Honda EU2200i-class inverter generator — Amazon
- STA-BIL fuel stabilizer — Amazon
- Mr. Heater Buddy (follow indoor rules) — Amazon
- Wool blanket — Amazon
Read watt-hours, not the marketing “days.” A station that runs a fridge is a different purchase from a brick that charges phones.
Comms & navigation
When the cell network is a brick, you still need weather, family, and a road home. Stack three layers: broadcast in, neighborhood talk, long-range if you will do the work.
Layer 1 — listen
- NOAA Weather Radio — weather.gov/nwr
- NWS — weather.gov
- FEMA app — download before the storm
- Midland / crank NOAA radio — Amazon
Write frequencies and family numbers on a card. Tape it inside the radio door.
Layer 2 — the block
FRS: no license, short range. GMRS: FCC family license, better radios. FCC GMRS. Do not program public-safety channels.
Layer 3 — ham
Technician class is the door. A cheap handheld is a starter, not a plan. License first.
- FCC amateur service — FCC
- ARRL get licensed — arrl.org/getting-licensed
- Find a club / exam — ARRL clubs
- Gordon West Technician manual — Amazon
- Yaesu FT-65R class HT — Amazon
Satellite and paper maps
- Garmin inReach Messenger — Amazon
- USGS maps — store.usgs.gov
- Cammenga lensatic compass — Amazon
- Benchmark / state atlas — Amazon
Bags & kits
One giant rucksack that never leaves the closet is not a plan. Three smaller kits that live where you actually are. Official floor: ready.gov/kit
Get-home (car / office): water bottle + mini filter, no-cook calories, light jacket, headlamp, shoes you can walk in, power bank, ID copy, cash, 24 hours of meds.
Bug-out (72 hours): 2 liters ready + filter, 6,000–9,000 calories, tarp or bag rated for your worst night, IFAK + meds, fire / light / knife / cordage, NOAA radio, document pouch. If you cannot carry it up a flight of stairs, it is a tote, not a bag.
Vehicle: season-swap it. Jump pack, blanket, shovel, water, tire plug.
- 5.11 Rush 72 2.0 — Amazon
- 5.11 Rush 12 (get-home) — Amazon
- Nalgene 32 oz — Amazon
- Morakniv Garberg — Amazon
- Leatherman Wave Plus — Amazon
- Ferro rod + UCO matches — Amazon
- 550 paracord — Amazon
- Tarp — Amazon
- Fireproof document bag — Amazon
- NOCO jump starter — Amazon
- Resqme escape tool — Amazon
Weigh the bag. Then walk it. Kids get their own small bag. Pets: leash, food, bowl, copies of shots.
Grid-down / EMP
The outage you will meet first is weather, a substation, or a cyber hit on something boring. EMP and a hard solar storm are the tail risk. Prep for the week of darkness. Treat the pulse as a reason to stash a spare radio, not a reason to skip water.
- Power outages — ready.gov/power-outages
- Cyber — ready.gov/cybersecurity
- Space weather — ready.gov/space-weather
- NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center — swpc.noaa.gov
What actually fails: pumps, gas-station card readers, refrigeration, medical devices, cell sites on generator fuel that runs out.
A nuclear EMP or a Carrington-class solar event can wreck long lines and unshielded electronics. Consumer “EMP-proof generator” ads outrun the science. Practical moves that still help in a normal ice storm: spare NOAA radio and a spare HT stored off in a Faraday bag; paper maps, paper manuals, paper phone lists.
Household week card: fill tubs at the first warning · freeze extra water bottles while power still runs · keep the fridge closed · cook fridge first, freezer second, cans last · generator outside only · radio at the top of the hour · check on the neighbor who cannot do stairs.
Weapons, 2A & home defense
The Second Amendment is the floor. State statute is the maze. A firearm you will not train with is a safe decoration. This desk is law, roles, storage, and legal tools. It is not a recipe book for homemade weapons, conversions, or explosives. Those stay off Whatfinger.
Not legal advice. Laws change. Read the official page for the state you stand in.
The living law stack (use this every time)
- The text — Second Amendment, National Archives — archives.gov
- ATF official compilation — all states and territories — State Laws and Published Ordinances – Firearms — ATF state PDFs
- NRA-ILA state gun law index — nraila.org/gun-laws/state-gun-laws
- Handgunlaw.us — carry, permitless, off-limits — handgunlaw.us
Permitless PDF: Permitless_Carry_States.pdf
Age-to-carry PDF: Age_to_Carry.pdf - USCCA reciprocity map — USCCA map
- ATF firearms home — atf.gov/firearms
90-second ritual before you carry across a state line: ATF PDF + Handgunlaw.us + USCCA map. Reciprocity is a statute, not a mood.
Whatfinger on this beat: THEY CAN’T BAN THE SECOND AMENDMENT. SO DEMOCRATS PUT A PRICE TAG ON IT.
50-state launch pad
NRA-ILA keeps a page per state off the index above. ATF keeps a PDF per state off the compilation above. Start there. Do not crowdsource your liberty from a Facebook comment.
Permitless / constitutional carry is now the majority of the map. Handgunlaw.us is the live scoreboard. Ages still differ. Schools, federal buildings, posted private property, and alcohol still end careers.
States and cities that treat the right like a subscription — California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Illinois, Hawaii, D.C., plus local fee traps like San Jose. Expect rosters, magazine rules, waiting periods, carry prices, and ammo paperwork. Download the ATF PDF before you move a gun into those borders.
Travel rule: the state you drive into owns the stop. A Texas permitless carry habit does not bless a Newark rest area.
Survival roles (legal firearms)
Own fewer guns. Own common ammo. Train. Buy the firearm from a licensed dealer. Amazon is for locks, eyes, ears, cleaning, and safes — not for skipping an FFL.
| Role | Why people pick it | Ammo note |
|---|---|---|
| .22 LR rifle | Small game, cheap practice, low recoil | Everywhere in normal times |
| 12-gauge pump | Birds, pests, home, slugs if you trained | 2¾” buck / bird / slug — pick a load and practice |
| Common rifle (5.56/.223 or .308) | Longer work, hunting where legal | Pick the cartridge your stores actually shelf |
| Defensive pistol you can shoot | On-body / home, where law allows | 9mm is the common American answer |
A survival battery that needs four orphan calibers is a supply-chain joke.
Training: local range + an instructor with a name · NRA basic pistol / rifle / personal protection · USCCA classes · Stop the Bleed next to the range bag.
- Cable lock — Amazon
- Quick-access pistol safe — Amazon
- Long-gun safe — Amazon
- Eyes + ears — Amazon
- Snap caps — Amazon
- Otis cleaning kit — Amazon
- Range bag — Amazon
Knives, bows, less-lethal, the house
A fixed blade is a shelter and food tool first. Blade-length law varies by city. Bows and hunting air rifles have seasons. Pepper spray bans exist in some cities. Look them up.
- Morakniv Garberg — Amazon
- ESEE-4 — Amazon
- Streamlight flashlight — Amazon
- SABRE Red spray (where legal) — Amazon
- Door strike reinforcement — Amazon
- Motion flood lights — Amazon
Lights on the outside. Solid doors. A plan for the hallway that does not send a round into the neighbor’s kitchen. Know your state’s castle / stand-your-ground / duty-to-retreat language from the statute, not from a show. If leaving the house is smarter than holding it, leave.
