Hundreds of stores were hit after attackers remotely forced refrigeration systems to heat up to 122°F (50°C), in some cases for SIX HOURS. Entire stocks of fresh and frozen food had to be THROWN AWAY, and authorities even reported FIRES linked to the attack. 🇫🇷 Hackers just turned supermarket FREEZERS into OVENS across France, and the damage is absolutely INSANE.

- Putting aside being connected to the internet, no one else thinks it’s beyond stupid to make a refrigerator that can be heated to 50C/122F? lol what possible reason could there be to even make that a function for a refrigerator? C
It looks apocalyptic. It isn’t. France, October 12: hackers took control of supermarket refrigerators, raising the temperature to 50°C. Over 500 stores affected (Intermarche, Super U, Carrefour). Cold chain broken, tons of food discarded. Not a shortage. It’s a targeted attack on the food supply chain.

🇨🇵 Hackers heat refrigerators in hundreds of French supermarkets to 50C, causing fires and food losses, while Ahold Delhaize takes down Food Lion and Stop & Shop websites
Hackers remotely forced refrigeration systems in several hundred French supermarkets to heat up overnight, destroying fresh and frozen stock and causing fires, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office, which opened an investigation on Monday into what it called a large-scale cyberattack on connected refrigerators at several major food retailers.
Intermarche’s owner, Les Mousquetaires, told Reuters about 150 of its stores were hit, with fridges pushed to 50C (122F) for six hours, and that it threw all the food away. AFP, citing the retailers, puts the toll at least 300 Intermarche or Netto stores, more than 100 Cooperative U outlets and several E. Leclerc stores. Carrefour said 80 of its supermarkets were attacked, according to Reuters.
The entry point appears to be old equipment. A person close to Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu told Reuters and AFP that France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI had identified a vulnerability in software from the Danish manufacturer Danfoss.
Danfoss said the affected units were mostly “legacy” products running “outdated firmware” that no longer receive security updates, naming its AK-SM800 and AK-SC355 controllers, and said it had long advised customers to upgrade. ANSSI is working with European counterparts because other countries may be affected, the person close to Lecornu said.
🇳🇱 There is a US angle, and an open question. Ahold Delhaize, the Dutch group that owns Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Hannaford and Giant, said it had taken its retail websites offline and suspended online ordering and delivery after a security issue in its network that began Sunday, Supermarket News reports. Its stores in the US and Europe remain open, though in the Netherlands loyalty discounts were suspended and electronic shelf labels showed wrong prices. Reuters says it is not clear whether the Ahold Delhaize incident is linked to the French attack.
No group has claimed the attack and French authorities have not attributed it. Cooperative U chief executive Dominique Schelcher called targeting equipment that keeps the food supply fresh an act “of extreme gravity” and “unprecedented.” EU agriculture commissioner Christophe Hansen said the exploitation of food was now a “reality.”
🇷🇺 The context is a Europe already on alert: President Emmanuel Macron last month ordered measures to protect French critical infrastructure from Russian “hybrid attacks.”
