The video tracks America’s highest-paying jobs year by year from 1999 through 2026. The pattern is simple. Specialized doctors have owned the top of the list for decades. Airline pilots climbed hard after the pandemic shortage. Chief executives and tech managers sit in the mix. The clip is a useful starting point for a bigger question: which occupations keep paying big money once artificial intelligence becomes smarter than humans at most thinking work. Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2025 (released in 2026) shows the current scoreboard. Pediatric surgeons lead with a mean annual wage of about $502,000. Cardiologists follow near $455,000. Radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other specialists fill out the rest of the top ranks. Outside medicine, airline pilots average roughly $289,000. Chief executives sit just behind them. Computer and information systems managers, financial managers, and lawyers land in the mid-to-high six figures for the top of their fields. The national average across all jobs is around $70,000.
Those numbers have been remarkably stable at the top for a generation. In the early 2000s, surgeons already led. Specialized medicine stayed there through recessions, tech booms, and the pandemic. Pilots started lower—around $115,000 in the early 2000s—and surged once airlines faced retirement waves, training bottlenecks, and a rebound in travel. The video captures that medical dynasty and the pilot jump.

Now look forward. Super-intelligence means AI systems that outperform people across most intellectual tasks: analysis, coding, design, research, diagnosis support, and more. We are not fully there yet, but the pay for people building the frontier is already extreme. Meta’s Superintelligence Labs and similar teams at OpenAI, Anthropic, and others have offered top researchers packages in the tens of millions, and in reported cases far higher, over multi-year deals. These are not average software jobs. They are scarce talent packages for people who can push the models themselves.
Most workers will not land those roles. The durable high earners in that era will be people who own or control the systems, people who build the physical infrastructure the systems need, and people whose work still requires human accountability, hands-on skill, or trust that regulation and customers will not hand over completely.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made the infrastructure point directly at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2026. He told BlackRock’s Larry Fink that the AI buildout is one of the largest infrastructure projects in history. Data centers need massive electrical work, liquid cooling (plumbing), structural construction, and technicians. Huang said plumbers, electricians, and related trades can command six-figure pay without a PhD. McKinsey estimates the U.S. alone needs roughly 130,000 more trained electricians this decade, plus large numbers of construction workers and supervisors. In boom regions, reports already show top electricians on AI projects clearing well into six figures with overtime.

Medicine will not vanish overnight. Complex surgery involves physical skill, real-time judgment under uncertainty, and legal liability that hospitals and regulators will not dump on a machine in the near term. Primary care and routine diagnostics face more pressure from AI tools. The same logic applies to certain high-stakes roles that combine judgment with physical presence or public trust—some aviation work until full autonomy is both technically reliable and accepted, high-end mechanical trades, and relationship-driven business ownership.

Ownership and capital still sit above labor. The people who own the AI companies, the data centers, the specialized practices, or the businesses that deploy the tools effectively will capture the largest upside. Average coding jobs and routine knowledge work face the most pressure. Roles that direct AI systems, evaluate them, secure them, or integrate them into real operations (AI architects, safety and alignment specialists, infrastructure engineers for GPU clusters) already pay premium rates and are likely to stay scarce longer.

For kids in school looking at the numbers, the practical takeaway is straightforward. The highest average wages have gone to fields with long training, real scarcity, and high responsibility. In the Super-Intelligence period, that scarcity shifts toward people who can build, maintain, own, or oversee the systems—and people whose work cannot be fully separated from human hands, presence, or legal accountability. Math, technical skills that let you work with AI tools, specialized medicine, and skilled trades that support the physical buildout all map to that reality. Waiting for a pure “AI-proof” office job is the weaker bet. The video’s historical record shows the top has always rewarded the scarce and the high-stakes. The next version of that list will reward the same traits in new forms.
