Ancient tools on islands past the Wallace Line suggest someone crossed open water more than a million years ago. The debate is whether they meant to. Our readers at Whatfinger News love mystery. Especially when it comes to the history of the human race. This we found to be very interesting.
A clip circulating from Joe Rogan and researcher Michael Button (JRE #2546) (Below) highlights 2025 finds that keep popping up in these discussions. Seven small stone flakes turned up at the Calio site in southern Sulawesi, Indonesia. Dating of the sandstone layers and a fossil pig jaw places them at a minimum of 1.04 million years old, with a possible range up to about 1.48 million. Sulawesi has always sat east of the Wallace Line. Even when ice-age sea levels dropped and connected Java and Borneo to the Asian mainland, deep channels kept Sulawesi isolated. The shortest crossing would have been tens of kilometers of open ocean with strong currents. Continued under the vid
That is not an isolated data point. On Flores, tools at Wolo Sege sit under a volcanic layer dated to 1.02 million years ago. Earlier work at Mata Menge had already put hominins there by roughly 800,000–880,000 years ago. Those early arrivals are widely seen as ancestors of the small-bodied Homo floresiensis (the “hobbits”) that lived on the island until about 50,000 years ago. Farther north, on Luzon in the Philippines, the Kalinga site yielded 57 stone tools next to a butchered rhinoceros dated around 709,000 years ago (range roughly 631,000–777,000). Cut marks and smashed bones show someone was after meat and marrow.
Homo sapiens did not exist yet. The most common candidate for the toolmakers is Homo erectus or a close relative already known on nearby Java by about 1.5–1.6 million years ago. No hominin fossils have been recovered at Calio itself, so the exact species remains open.
This discovery could rewrite all of human history.
Ancient stone tools were found on an island in Indonesia.
They’re over 1 million years old.
But no human could have reached the island without advanced seafaring technology.
This just left Joe Rogan speechless.
Ancient history researcher Michael Button broke down this bombshell paper from August 2025:
“Seafaring was always thought to be an exclusively … modern human trait.”
“It’s a really hard thing to do.”
“But a paper came out in August last year.”
“These stone tools were found … on Sulawesi.”
“Sulawesi is an island that crucially sits east of something called the Wallace Line.”
“Which means that it has been … separated from the mainland for tens of millions of years.”
“Separated by deep ocean channels that are between … 50 and 100 kilometers across.”
“Yet in August 2025, archeologists at a site called Calio found stone tools on Sulawesi.”
“That means that some type of human … managed to cross that ocean boundary and reach Sulawesi.”
“It’s not the only piece of evidence in the region.”
“A decade or so ago, we found stone tools on Flores.”
“Just below Sulawesi.”
“It’s another island, and crucially, again, east of the Wallace Line.”
“You have to cross an ocean boundary to get to Flores.”
“And they found stone tools there that are 1.02 million years old.”
“The Sulawesi tools are 1.04 to 1.4 million years old.”
“There’s also Luzon.”
“Just above Sulawesi, same region.”
“And they found stone tools there which are 700,000 years old.”
“The theory was that it was accidental drift.”
“A couple of humans were swept out to sea … and somehow survived and colonized the island.”
“But now that we’ve got Flores, Luzon, and Sulawesi, three islands all in the same region, all separated by this ocean boundary, I think it’s starting to point … towards a deliberate sea crossing.”
“The simplest explanation is that these humans were intelligent enough to build boats.”

Button’s argument, which Rogan engaged with, focuses on numbers. A viable founding population needs hundreds of breeding-age people, not a handful of survivors. NASA-style colony math puts a rough minimum around 500 to avoid inbreeding collapse. Doing that by pure accident—multiple times, on multiple islands in the same region, across permanent deep-water barriers—requires a string of low-probability events. Button treats deliberate crossings, using some form of raft or simple watercraft, as the simpler reading once you have three separate island cases.
The lead researchers on the Sulawesi paper take the opposite view. Adam Brumm of Griffith University and colleagues note that the tools themselves are basic percussion flakes indistinguishable from many other early Pleistocene assemblages. They argue early hominins almost certainly lacked the planning and technology for intentional voyages over the horizon. The preferred explanation is accidental dispersal: people swept out on natural vegetation mats or logs during storms or tsunamis, the same mechanism proposed for rodents and certain primates that also reached these islands. No preserved boats exist anywhere from this period; organic materials do not survive a million years in the tropics.
Michael (@MichaelButtonX ) explains that Homo sapiens were building boats at least 60,000 years ago… enough to reach the Ice Age landmass of Australia and New Guinea. But he points to something even more intriguing: much older hominins showing up on islands separated by deep ocean channels.
Flores, Luzon, Sulawesi ….each requiring long stretches of open water to cross. One island might be an accident. Two is a stretch. Three raises a different question: at what point does it stop looking like coincidence and start looking like intention?
If early humans could go that far, he asks, how far else could they have gone?

Rogan has covered related ground with other guests. Graham Hancock has repeatedly pointed out that archaeology already accepts seafaring by modern humans to Australia by roughly 50,000–60,000 years ago and to places like Cyprus that remained islands even at lowest sea level. The new Wallacean dates simply push the same problem much farther back in time, into species that predate us. Older Rogan clips on Polynesian navigation and the peopling of Australia keep circling the same tension: the accepted record keeps getting older while direct evidence of the vessels stays missing.

On X, the Sulawesi paper and the Rogan discussion have drawn straightforward reactions. Accounts noted the deep-water barrier and asked the obvious question about boats. Others simply restated the dates and the Wallace Line fact. The posts treat the finds as another data point that forces the timeline of complex behavior earlier than textbooks usually allow, without requiring exotic technology.
What the record actually shows is repeated presence of tool-using hominins on islands that demanded a water crossing, beginning more than a million years ago. Whether those crossings were mostly accidents, deliberate trips, or some mix is still open. The tools prove someone arrived. They do not prove how, or how many times, or with what level of planning. That gap is exactly why the question keeps coming up on Rogan and elsewhere: the evidence of arrival is now solid and old, while the means of arrival remains inference.
