    James Talarico dropped off the Texas Senate trail for nearly two weeks. Megyn Kelly opened her show on the gap. The campaign called it the flu. X called it something else. Friday afternoon he turned up at a music festival.

    James Talarico Went Missing for Nearly Two Weeks. The Flu Story Did Not Kill the Rumors.

    Megyn Kelly opened her show this week on a simple question. Where is James Talarico? We have heard all of the rumors.

    The Texas Democrat running for U.S. Senate against Ken Paxton had been off the in-person trail for close to two weeks. Kelly’s episode is titled “The Mystery of Talarico’s DISAPPEARANCE.” Her team said the last time he was seen on video was about 10 days earlier, and that chatter in Texas had him in a mental health facility. That is the jump-off. The rest of the story is the calendar, the excuses, and the posts that filled the silence.

    Talarico is 37. He is a state representative from the Austin area, a former teacher, and the Democrat nominee in the Nov. 3 race. Paxton is the state attorney general and the Trump-backed Republican. With less than a month left, a candidate who wants 31 million Texans to send him to Washington stopped showing up in public.

    Here is the timeline that is actually on the record.

    His last in-person event in Texas was Sept. 26, a news conference in Carrollton. After that he went to New York for a private fundraiser hosted by whining anti-Trump actor Robert De Niro. On Sept. 30 he was supposed to be in Edinburg for a U.S. Hispanic Business Council event. He joined on video instead.

    On that call he said he had started feeling bad a few days earlier. The night before, he said, it got bad enough that he went to urgent care in Dallas and was told he had the flu. He said he was running a fever and did not want to get someone’s grandmother or baby sick. “I guess I’ve been shaking too many hands on the campaign trail,” he said.

    Campaign spokesman JT Ennis repeated that line. After more than 100 public events and “shaking tens of thousands of hands,” Talarico had the flu and would be back on the trail this weekend. A Texas Democrat close to the race told NBC News he was “really sick,” and that the campaign did not want this right now.

    Paxton’s team kept a harder count. No rally since Sept. 16. Not seen in person in Texas since Sept. 26. By Thursday that was 12 days. By Friday morning some outlets were calling it 13.

    Paxton put up “MISSING” posters and posted photos from outside Kyle Field at Texas A&M, and from Fort Worth and Dallas. “LAST SEEN: 12 days ago,” he wrote. “Texans everywhere are asking: where is James Talarico?” At a San Antonio rally he had the crowd chant the same question.

    His spokeswoman, Madison Cercy, went further. “Low-T Jimmy appears to be having a full-blown mental Tala-freak-out on the national stage,” she said, and demanded “proof of life.” The ask was specific: a video of Talarico holding a newspaper dated that day, a doctor’s note, or the flight he took home from the New York fundraisers. Ted Cruz posted a milk-carton graphic with Talarico’s face and the word MISSING.

    President Trump piled on from the same San Antonio stop and then on Truth Social. “TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days,” he wrote. He said 12 days is a long time to shake a flu bug, and asked what was going on. At the rally he also joked that Talarico was sick because he had been forced to eat meat for political reasons and was throwing up. That line is a jab, not a medical chart.

    The flu story is what the campaign has said in public. The other story is what people posted when the campaign would not put him on camera.

    On Oct. 9, reality-TV figure Spencer Pratt wrote on X that his sources were telling him Talarico was in a mental health facility, and that the campaign had stopped actively planning events in the homestretch. Pratt named no source and posted no records. He added that if it were true, people should pray for Talarico, mock the advisers, and treat a crisis as disqualifying for a Senate run.

    The day before, BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales posted that she had “unverified information” on his whereabouts and that, if true, it would end the campaign. She asked people to email her and promised they would stay anonymous. She has not published a confirmation.

    Dallas Express looked for paperwork or a campaign statement backing a facility stay and found none. The campaign has kept saying flu. A local Fox station asked for a proof-of-life Zoom and was turned down. A New York Post report on a private volunteer Slack, a channel with nearly 4,000 people, had one volunteer worried less about the attacks than about lost momentum.

    Those posts are rumors. They are not hospital records. They spread because a Senate nominee went dark in the last month of a race and answered with a spokesman, not a face.

    Friday afternoon the face came back. The Austin American-Statesman caught Talarico backstage at Austin City Limits, at the Beatbox stage during a set by World Famous Pets. He told the paper he comes to ACL every year and was looking forward to Turnstile and Natasha Bedingfield. Dallas Morning News reported him walking the festival and posing for pictures. Ennis said, “James Talarico is back on the campaign trail talking to voters at Austin City Limits.”

    A festival photo ends the milk-carton bit. It does not answer why a routine flu kept the Democratic nominee off the trail from a Sept. 30 Zoom until an Oct. 9 concert, or why the campaign would not do the newspaper video Paxton asked for. He is also booked for a CNN town hall on Oct. 14. Paxton still has not agreed to the debate Talarico has been demanding for more than 80 days.

    Kelly treated the gap as the story. So did Trump, Paxton, and a pile of X accounts. The campaign called it a bug. Texans can look at the dates and decide which version they believe.
