    An ICE agent shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in New York while Belgal’s five-year-old son was inside his vehicle. The first viral framing focused almost entirely on the child, but federal officials say Belgal rammed ICE vehicles and then accelerated toward officers during an arrest attempt, causing them to fear for their lives.
    Belgal survived a superficial neck wound and his son was not injured. DHS also alleges that Belgal is associated with the Trinitarios gang, has a grand-larceny conviction and previously evaded ICE. Protesters and political critics are raging over the shooting, while ICE says the officers did not know the boy was inside. Those government claims remain official allegations as the incident is investigated.

    On Thursday, October 8, an ICE agent shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck during an arrest try in Marble Hill, on the Bronx-Manhattan line. His 5-year-old son was in the back seat. The boy was not hurt. Belgal lived. By nightfall, Mayor Zohran Mamdani had spent two hours on the phone with President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, demanding the man be released and that ICE leave New York. The feds said no. The crowd outside the hospital did not wait for the paperwork.

    Protesters shoved officers, threw water bottles, and rammed metal barricades into the NYPD while chanting “our streets.” Five people were arrested for blocking government work. A Mamdani-backed Democratic Socialists candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier, yelled at the cops to “stop escalating.” The clip is up on Whatfinger News.     Federal officials say this was a targeted arrest, not a random stop. They say Belgal is in the country illegally, from the Dominican Republic, with a grand larceny conviction, five years of probation, and earlier arrests for assault, robbery, drugs, and weapons. They also say he has ties to the Trinitarios gang, the same crew linked to the shooting of a Customs and Border Protection officer in the city last year. DHS says he ignored orders, rammed two federal vehicles, and accelerated toward officers. Agents fired seven rounds. They say they did not know the child was in the car. ICE rendered aid. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are on the case. Those claims are the government’s account, and the shooting is still under investigation.

    Mamdani did not lead with any of that.

    On X he wrote that agents had shot “a New Yorker” while a five-year-old was in the car, then closed with four words: “Abolish ICE.” At the late-night press conference he called the agency “rotten to its core,” said it “sows chaos and terror,” and told the city, “We want ICE out of our city, ICE out of our schools, ICE out of our hospitals, ICE out of our streets, ICE away from our kids.” He said the two-hour call failed. Trump and Mullin would not spring Belgal. This anti-American con-artist lies as the norm. He and his ilk want to ban ICE, and freedom all ovr the U.S.

    Mullin answered Friday in plain language. “His words are dangerous, and incite hostility. It doesn’t help.” He called the mayor’s show “political theater,” said Mamdani “puts criminals over law-abiding citizens,” and asked the obvious question: if you abolish ICE, who takes the gang members and thieves off your streets? He also said the mayor “won’t even stand up for his own NYPD officers, that by the way, protect him every single day.” Enforcement is not pausing. “In fact, I’m not sorry.” Belgal has already been moved out of state. The feds offered to hand him to the NYPD. City Hall would not take him. Sanctuary rules, they said. No open city warrant.

    That is the pattern, not a one-night slip.

    Mamdani ran on stopping ICE from deporting “our neighbors.” He called the agency a rogue outfit with “no interest in laws.” On election night he looked into the camera and told Trump, “Turn the volume up,” then bragged that New York would be “led by an immigrant.” In February he signed Executive Order 13, “Protecting New Yorkers from Abusive Immigration Enforcement.” It locks ICE out of schools, shelters, hospitals, and city parking lots without a judicial warrant, and it tells city agencies to audit themselves so they do not help federal officers. The same week he pushed nearly 32,000 “Know Your Rights” booklets in 10 languages, teaching people to stay silent and demand a judge’s warrant if ICE shows up. In August he told a Spanish paper he had already said it to the president’s face: ICE runs on “cruelty and inhumanity” and should be abolished.

    Thursday night he did it again, in public, while a child had just been in a car federal agents say was used as a weapon. Friday morning his official account posted, “Immigrant New Yorkers belong here. ICE does not,” and pointed people to a free legal hotline. The hospital crowd had already mixed “ICE off our streets” with “From Palestine to Mexico, all these walls have got to go.” A city mayor does not have to hand out the bottles. He spent the evening telling that crowd the officers were terrorists and the suspect was the neighbor.

    Decency is a low bar. It means you wait for the facts before you demand a release. It means you do not call a man with a larceny conviction and alleged gang ties a “New Yorker” in the same breath you ignore the officers who say he drove at them. It means you do not spend your first year in office building a wall between the NYPD and the only federal agency that will still pick up people the city will not hold. DHS says sanctuary rules are why Belgal was on the street after a 2023 city arrest. Mamdani’s answer is more of the same wall.

    Trump’s team is not blinking. Mullin said the job is the worst of the worst, and the work continues. Mamdani can keep the hotline and the booklets. The officers in that Marble Hill clip do not get a hotline. They get a mayor who calls them rotten, then acts surprised when the street takes him at his word.
