Shane Gillis returned to host Saturday Night Live for the third time since the show fired him in 2019, and entertainment media immediately declared that he had “bombed” again. His monologue included jokes about gym culture, women’s workout clothes and the suffocating rules surrounding modern comedy—exactly the material guaranteed to send professional outrage merchants into orbit.
Variety framed audience groans as proof of failure, while Gillis continued doing the same unapologetic comedy that made him massively successful after SNL tried to cancel him. He even accidentally dropped an F-bomb during a later sketch and rolled with it. The bigger story is not whether every joke landed; it is watching the same media establishment insist Gillis failed while repeatedly inviting him back because audiences clearly want him.
