Trump’s One-Year War on DC Crime: 16,000 Arrests and a Capital Finally Getting Its Act Together
One year after President Trump declared a crime emergency in the nation’s capital and stood up the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, the numbers are in—and they are not subtle.
More than 16,000 arrests. Thirty-five homicide suspects taken off the street. Over 100 known gang members locked up. More than 3,200 narcotics arrests. Nearly 2,000 illegal firearms seized. Twenty-five missing children recovered and returned home. This is what happens when the federal government stops treating the District like a protected sanctuary for predators and starts treating it like the capital of the United States.
The task force, launched in August 2025 under U.S. Marshals leadership and backed by a surge of federal agents and National Guard troops, was the largest coordinated law-enforcement effort ever assembled against crime in a major American city. It followed a series of high-profile outrages, including the June 2025 shooting death of a 21-year-old congressional intern caught in crossfire. Trump refused to accept the status quo. He federalized aspects of the Metropolitan Police Department under emergency authority, flooded the streets with enforcement, and made clear that open-air drug markets, carjackings, and gang shootings would no longer be shrugged off as “root causes.”
The contrast with the Biden years is stark. Homicides in the District climbed from 198 in 2020 to 226 in 2021, 203 in 2022, and then exploded to 274 in 2023—the highest in decades. Violent crime followed the same ugly trajectory. Soft-on-crime policies, revolving-door justice, and an obsession with “equity” over order produced predictable results: more bodies, more fear, and a capital that felt less safe than many foreign cities. By 2024, under continued local leadership, homicides had fallen to 187 and overall violent crime was down sharply from the 2023 peak. That decline continued and accelerated once real enforcement arrived. In 2025, homicides dropped another 32 percent to 127—the lowest total in years—and total violent crime fell 29 percent. Property crime and overall reported crime also declined significantly.
Clearance rates tell part of the story too. The District’s homicide clearance rate jumped to 85 percent in 2025, the highest in more than a decade. When you actually arrest the people committing the violence and prosecute them, the numbers move. Year-to-date 2026 data through early August show homicides continuing downward (down roughly 32 percent from the same period in 2025), overall crime down about 20 percent, and major property crimes like motor vehicle theft plunging more than 50 percent. Some categories of assault have ticked up in the preliminary figures, but the broad trend is clear: the streets are quieter, the most dangerous offenders are in custody, and the open lawlessness that defined recent years has been pushed back.
Critics screamed about “occupation,” “militarization,” and the end of home rule. Residents and visitors who actually walk the streets have noticed something different: fewer shootings, fewer carjackings, fewer open drug markets, and a visible presence of people whose job is to stop crime instead of managing it. The task force did not invent declining crime rates—national and local trends were already moving—but it applied pressure where previous leadership refused to. It targeted the worst actors, cleared warrants, seized guns, and treated public safety as a non-negotiable priority rather than a political inconvenience.
Washington is still not perfect. No major city is. But the experiment of the past year has delivered measurable results that soft policies never produced. Sixteen thousand arrests is not a talking point. It is a statement that the people who make the capital dangerous no longer get a free pass. The results speak louder than the complaints. The only people who do not want crime reduced are Democrats and their Marxist allies taking over their own party. Them, and of course their judges and officials that do all they can to release as many criminals as possible so they can hurt and attack as many Americans at will.
