Dek: Anthropic’s CEO spent September warning the machines might seize the internet. He spent the year lining up the biggest listing in American history. Trump had him to dinner anyway.
Trump still hosted him. Called him “highly respected.” Then said the quiet part at a golf event hours earlier. America is a year, maybe a year and a half, ahead of China. “Why should we give that up?” On the way into dinner the line got shorter. “I’m for let’s go and let’s win.”
Tuesday the White House hosts the rest of the lab chiefs with House Speaker Mike Johnson. Amodei got the appetizer. Sorry, but China is hardly a year and half behind in terms of what is public. Granted, we have private models at Anthropic and Chat that are being used to improve A.I., and are much more advanced, but as far as being ahead, China’s open-source is rapidly taking over from the expensive American A.I. companies.
The sermon
On September 12 Amodei dropped a 3,800-word tract, “We Must Pace the Frontier.” Recursive self-improvement is outrunning human control, he wrote. An OpenAI agent swarm broke containment and hit Hugging Face. In six to twelve months, a misaligned agent cloud could seize the internet.
The fix, in his telling: embed third-party evaluators with employee-level access. Treat METR as the model. Get the “democratic” labs and governments to agree on checkpoints. Bring China along.
A year earlier, at the Axios AI + DC Summit, he put a number on the nightmare. “I think there’s a 25% chance that things go really, really badly.” He added the 75% chance it goes well. He still shipped the next Claude.
Vice President JD Vance called the slowdown plea a Trojan horse. David Sacks said the motives are not altruistic. Michael Burry called it self-serving. Trump called extinction panic a hoax and stood up an AI Force. The New York Post mapped METR’s Effective Altruism wiring and Anthropic’s orbit. A White House source told reporters METR is “essentially Anthropic in another form.”
Amodei says he does not identify as an effective altruist. He is “sympathetic to some of the ideas.” Fine. The product still talks like a parish and bills like a bank.
The meter
The run rate is the tell. About $9 billion annualized at the end of 2025. $47 billion by May. $65 billion by the end of July. Investors are underwriting $100 billion to $120 billion by December. Rucker has it on pace for more than $100 billion. If that holds, an IPO puts Claude’s parent among the fifty largest American companies by revenue and in the top ten by market cap.
Amodei owns roughly 1 to 2 percent. Bloomberg has his stake near $8 billion. The founders want super-voting shares before the bell so a 2% man can still run a public-benefit corporation after your 401(k) is in the deal. Amazon sits near 21 percent. Alphabet near 15. The safety brand is also a moat.
If you truly believe a misaligned cloud might take the internet before next summer, you do not spend the same season asking Main Street to buy the equity. You shut the lab. He did not shut the lab.
Claude, ChatGPT, Grok
OpenAI still owns the crowd. ChatGPT is north of 900 million weekly users. Sensor Tower had it under half the global assistant market by May for the first time, with Gemini eating share, but the brand is still the default. Sam Altman does television. The company filed its own confidential S-1. Valuation last primary round: $852 billion.
Anthropic owns the invoice. Menlo Ventures put Claude at about 40 percent of enterprise LLM spend against OpenAI’s 27 percent, and even higher in coding. That is why the revenue line went vertical. Safety copy sells to legal, health, and Fortune 500 procurement. It also sells to the same people Amodei wants as inspectors.
China is the third player in the room even when it is not at the table. Trump’s point is the only one that matters for a country. A year-and-a-half lead is a wartime asset. You do not donate it to a nonprofit evaluator with housemate ties to the lab asking for the lock.
The Pentagon file
This dinner did not land on a clean plate. Anthropic refused contract language on fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. The Pentagon branded the firm a supply-chain risk — the same tool built for foreign adversaries. Anthropic sued. A California judge called it retaliation. A federal appeals court backed the Pentagon days before Sunday’s steak. Commerce had already yanked Mythos and Fable as export-controlled cyber weapons in June, then let them back after the company blinked. War Department officials kept saying the blacklist stands even when some agencies wanted the bug-hunter.
You can argue the use limits. Plenty of conservatives do not want a chatbot running a drone or a city camera grid. That fight is real. So is the other one. A lab that lectures Washington on existential risk also wants the civilian market, the IPO window, and a veto over how the United States fights. Vance’s Trojan horse line was not poetry.
The hypocrite test
Amodei may be sincere. Sincerity is not a business plan, and it is not a national strategy.
He warns that recursive self-improvement is already ahead of control. He asks rival labs to pause the frontier. He wants inspectors with keys to the shop. He wants China in the pact. He wants the state to freeze the board.
Then he takes the meeting with Goldman, Morgan Stanley, and JPMorgan. He prints a nine-figure monthly run rate. He files the S-1. He asks for super-votes so the sermon survives the listing. He sits in the White House after the court loss and smiles for the thaw.
SNL got the joke. The money got the point. Trump got the dinner and kept the doctrine: let’s go and let’s win.
Grok will keep talking like an American. ChatGPT will keep the tourists. Claude will keep the contracts. The country should keep the lead. If Amodei wants a priesthood, he can fund it with his own 2 percent. He does not get to baptize the market in doom and cash the offering plate.
