Katrina’s new Origins Explained cut, The Ancient Tablet That Reveals Why Cats Are Watching Us, dropped Friday and did the honest thing. It treated the stare on the windowsill as an old human problem, not a cute internet bit. We humans have loved felines for thousands of years, and she puts in a good effort to explain it all in this video. For a history of cats and humans, see below the vid.

Sumerians logged the walk and the color. Egyptians put the same animal under the chair and in the tomb. Japan turned a Silk Road mouser into a two-tailed thing that eats the dead. Europe later tied the black coat to witches and then pretended a pope had ordered a continent-wide slaughter. The science, updated again in 2025, says the house cat is still half wild and only finished crossing into Europe about two thousand years ago. The myths kept traveling because the animal never stopped acting like it knew the room better than you did.

On X this week the same loop is running. Bastet jokes. “Psychic gatekeeper” posts. A long thread reminding people the Egyptian bond started with grain, not incense. The video is the jump. The record is older than the comments.

Tablet 45 and the color of luck

The Sumerian piece Katrina walks through is Tablet 45 from the omen encyclopedia often filed under Šumma Ālu. Household cats were already in the house as mousers. Priests still treated motion as weather. A white cat read as fortune. A black cat read as trouble. A jump over a sleeper read as sickness crossing the body. Thresholds mattered. So did the direction of the walk.

That is a practical people trying to put a silent night hunter on a spreadsheet. Grain draws rodents. Rodents draw cats. Cats draw meaning. The video also buries the viral Anunnaki fan-fic that has been circulating as if it were a translation. No clay tablet says the gods mailed house cats from a seventh star to police nightmares. People on X still repeat a cousin of that story because it feels like the stare. The tablet that exists is smaller and stranger. It is a field manual for anxiety.

Egypt: first the granary, then the goddess

Egypt is where the partnership got a theology. Cats were already killing vipers, mice, and birds that hit the Nile harvest before the pyramids were a tourist poster. Mafdet shows up in First Dynasty records as a feline protector of the king’s rooms. Bastet starts as a lioness and, once the house cat is common, softens into the cat-headed guardian of home, fertility, music, and the household. Sekhmet keeps the war face. Ra, in the underworld books, takes cat form to cut the chaos-serpent Apep.

Egyptians did not bow to every tabby as a god. Curators have been blunt about that. They watched the behavior and treated the living cat as a walking sign of the principle Bastet carried: the ordered house held against snakes, disease, and night. Harming one still carried the weight of sacrilege. Diodorus Siculus, writing as an eyewitness around 60 BC, watched a mob kill a Roman who had accidentally killed a cat. Ptolemy’s officials and the fear of Rome could not stop it. Herodotus, two centuries earlier, said a house shaved its eyebrows when the cat died and sent the body to Bubastis for burial.

The History, Mystery, and Mastery of Domestic Cats – Post at X

The cult got industrial. Pilgrims flooded Bubastis. Votive bronzes piled up. Catacombs at places like Beni Hasan held tens of thousands of mummified cats, some of them temple-bred offerings. Prince Thutmose, son of Amenhotep III, put his cat Ta Miu in a carved limestone sarcophagus around 1350 BC. The same civilization that would lynch a man for an accident also ran a kitten economy for the temple gift shop. Both facts are true. That is how a sacred animal looks when a state gets hold of it.

Persian camp stories later claimed Cambyses II had cats painted on shields and driven in front of the line at Pelusium so Egyptian troops would not shoot. Treat that as wartime color, not a documented order of battle. The reverence underneath the story was real enough that Greeks and Romans kept writing it down.

Japan: the mouser that learned a second job

Cats reach Japan late, around the sixth century, riding the same trade that moved Buddhism and silk. At first they are rare, elite, and useful in sutra storehouses. Urban Japan then does what urban Japan does. Folklore grows teeth.

Nekomata, the two-tailed mountain cat, eats people in the older mountain tales. Bakeneko is the house cat that lives too long, walks on its hind legs, and wears the owner’s face. Kasha is the corpse-stealing fire-cart demon that made some funeral rooms ban the family cat. Those stories are why a lucky waving cat can sit next to a monster in the same culture and nobody blinks. The animal kept both jobs: temple guardian and thing that crosses the line between the living room and the grave.

Some humor… Cats copying their humans never gets old

Europe’s black-coat panic, minus the internet legend

Medieval Europe did load cats with devil talk. Walter Map has the devil arriving as a black cat. Heretics and Templars get accused of kissing one. Alice Kyteler’s 1324 trial in Ireland includes an incubus in cat form. Pope Innocent VIII’s circle later treats the cat as the witch’s favorite prop. Local midsummer fires in parts of France did burn cats. Louis XIV watched one of those spectacles in Paris in 1648. That part of the record is ugly and real.

The tidy internet legend is the problem. Pope Gregory IX’s 1233 letter Vox in Rama describes an alleged German cult ritual involving a cat. It does not order Christendom to exterminate felines. It does not cause the Black Death. Historians and Snopes have both taken a bat to that chain. Cats were still in the house catching mice. Ancrene Wisse, a guide for anchoresses, even allows a nun her cat. The plague story that “the Church killed the cats, the rats exploded, Europe died” is a late web invention wearing a robe.

Black cats still pay the tax. Shelters know the adoption dip around Halloween. The coat became a symbol and the symbol outlived the decree.

    The DNA rewrite

For twenty years the textbook leaned on a 9,500-year-old burial at Shillourokambos on Cyprus: a cat laid near a human, which looked like the first pet. Mitochondrial work in 2017 then sketched a two-wave story, Near East then Egypt. Full genomes published in Science in late 2025 punched a hole in the early European chapter. Many of those “early domestic” bones were European wildcats with a little African ancestry mixed in. The cats that match today’s house cats leave North Africa and show up in Europe only about two thousand years ago, in the Roman window. Sardinia gets an earlier African wildcat that founds an island population of its own.

The Cyprus grave still matters. Somebody cared enough to bury the animal with a person. That is a relationship. It is not, on the new nuclear DNA, proof that Felis catus as we know it was already a finished product in the Levant. Ottoni’s team is now betting on North Africa, with Egypt’s Bastet boom as the cultural amplifier that put the animal on ships.

Vikings did the rest of the distribution work. Egyptian maternal lineages turn up at Baltic ports. Seafarers kept cats the way they kept rope. Grain ships are a buffet for rats. The cat was cargo that earned its keep.

it’s nice to be reminded that people have always loved their little four-legged friends

the oldest recorded name for a cat is “Nedjem” which 3,400 years ago in ancient egypt meant “Sweet One” https://t.co/ti9U51ABEy pic.twitter.com/DF52SBtAvx

    The chemistry under the myth

The stare still sells because the body answers it. A February 2025 home study found that fifteen minutes of unforced petting, holding, or quiet company raised oxytocin in both the owner and the cat. Forced hugs flattened the spike. The cat has to stay on purpose. Slow blinks do the social work dogs do with a long gaze. Return the blink and you are speaking their language.

Purring sits mostly in the 25–50 Hz band, with harmonics running higher. That is the same neighborhood bone-vibration labs use. Elizabeth von Muggenthaler’s 2001 abstract made the match famous. A 2023 Current Biology paper then showed the cat larynx can keep that low rumble going with a pad in the vocal fold, even without a constant brain drumbeat. Treat the “purr heals your femur” pitch as a rhyme of numbers, not a clinical trial on your tibia. The calmer claim holds up. The sound and the hand on the fur drop heart rate and cortisol. The University of Minnesota work that follows cat owners for years keeps finding a real break in fatal heart events. People who live with a small predator that chose the couch tend to last.

Genomes keep the punch line honest. The house cat is still close to Felis lybica, the North African wildcat. No floppy ears. No pack instinct. They moved toward the grain and never fully signed the domestication papers. That is why the lore never dies. An animal that hunts at 3 a.m. and then sleeps on your chest is going to collect priests, witches, and YouTube thumbnails.

    The count on the sofa

AVMA’s 2025 book puts about 73.8 million pet cats in the United States. APPA’s 2026 Cat Report says 53 million households, 39 percent of American homes, now keep at least one, after a 23 percent surge in 2024 and another 5 percent bump. Men are 43 percent of owners. Gen Z male ownership jumped 27 percent in a year. The world count of owned cats sits near 370 million, with the United States and China at the top of the raw list. Strays and ferals sit on top of that and nobody has a clean census.

The old partnership is still the lease. The grain is now kibble. The omen is now a Reel. The animal on the tablet is the animal on the keyboard.

Ben would say the cat is the last creature in the house that refuses to pretend it works for you. He would also say that is why every century keeps writing it down. I have 2 cats, and have always gotten them in pairs. Skinny and Chunky are their names, and life is just so much more fun with them in so many ways.
