Just hours ago in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexican influencer César Gastélum—known to hundreds of thousands of followers as “Cesarín”—was gunned down in broad daylight while livestreaming outside a KFC. Two men on a motorcycle rolled up, one put a bullet in his head, and the whole thing played out on camera for the world to see. He was doing a delivery-driver challenge with friends when the sicarios struck. Authorities say at least ten content creators have been assassinated in Sinaloa over the past two years.
This is not an isolated atrocity as we ll know from the now daily murders all across Mexico.. It is the daily reality of a country where the cartels, not the government, set the rules.
Last year, 23-year-old beauty influencer and salon owner Valeria Márquez was executed live on TikTok in Zapopan, Jalisco. A hitman dressed as a delivery driver walked in, confirmed her identity, and put one shot in her chest and two in her head while her followers watched in real time. The order came from a senior CJNG figure, Ramón Ángel “El R1” Álvarez Ayala, after his son got dumped and decided Daddy should “take care of the problem.” El R1 was eventually arrested. The son and the shooter remain free. A bouquet of red roses with a “Sorry” note later appeared outside the salon—cartel calling card.
These are not random crimes. They are power statements. In Sinaloa, the internal war between the Chapitos and La Mayiza factions that erupted after the July 2024 arrest of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has turned the state into a slaughterhouse. Monthly homicides more than tripled. The state recorded 1,732 homicides in 2025, up sharply from 1,022 the year before. Bodies turn up in vehicles, coolers, and public spaces. Roadblocks, targeted hits, and intimidation are routine. Content creators who once flirted with narco culture or simply lived in the wrong plaza have become easy targets—some named on “narco volantes” dropped over Culiacán.
The same pattern holds with the CJNG. Even after Mexican forces killed longtime leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera in February 2026, the organization remains a terrorist enterprise trafficking fentanyl that kills tens of thousands of Americans, running parallel governments, and enforcing its will through spectacular violence. The immediate retaliation after El Mencho’s death—roadblocks, arson, and attacks across nearly 20 states—showed just how much territory these groups still dominate.
Peak years 2018–2020 hit ~36,500–36,800 murders. Official numbers show a decline into 2025, but the underlying cartel engine never stopped.
President Donald Trump has said it plainly and repeatedly: the cartels control Mexico. Not the politicians in Mexico City. The cartels. They decide who lives, who dies, who pays taxes in the plazas, and who gets to film a TikTok without looking over their shoulder. Years of “hugs not bullets,” open U.S. borders that flooded the cartels with cash and manpower, and political protection for compromised officials created this monster. American fentanyl deaths, migrant chaos, and now live-streamed executions of ordinary young Mexicans trying to build a following are the bill coming due.

Official Mexican numbers claim national homicide declines under Claudia Sheinbaum. In cartel hotspots the picture is different—targeted killings, forced disappearances that never make the official tally, and entire regions where the state has effectively ceded control. When a beauty influencer can be murdered on camera for ending a relationship with a cartel prince’s son, and a comedy TikToker can be executed outside a fast-food restaurant a few hundred meters from the state prosecutor’s office, the message is clear: the animals run the zoo.
This is what happens when a neighboring country becomes a narco state in all but name. No amount of diplomatic soft talk or “root causes” lectures changes the fact that Mexican citizens—and American communities drowning in synthetic opioids—are paying the price. The cartels are not going to reform themselves. They only understand force and consequences.
