Israel has been on the receiving end of sustained Iranian missile and drone pressure for months in this grinding conflict. The “again” part is the story. Tel Aviv is no longer the untouchable fortress the old briefing slides promised. And when a retired U.S. Army colonel with real combat credentials keeps telling anyone who will listen that the strategic ledger is bleeding red for Israel, people who still care about reality tend to pay attention.
Col. Douglas Macgregor has not been subtle. In interview after interview through the summer of 2026 he has called Iran the clear winner of the wider West Asia war and Israel the profound loser. “Israel has overreached,” he said. “The Greater Israel project has simply multiplied the enemies of Israel.” He has gone further: Israel is in real danger of going out of existence as currently constituted. The map that emerges when the shooting finally stops will not look like the one Netanyahu’s circle imagined. That is not the language of a man who thinks Iron Dome and a few more bunker-busters will restore the status quo ante. Macgregor’s critique is structural. Israel stretched itself across multiple fronts, counted on American power to finish what it started, and discovered that Iranian missile forces, hardened infrastructure, and national cohesion were not the house of cards the planners expected. The United States, he contends, has already lost the war to subjugate Iran with air and naval power. Continuing to double down only reinforces failure. Israel, locked into an existential framing of the fight, has little interest in any off-ramp that leaves Tehran standing as a regional power. The result is a grinding, open-ended conflict that bleeds Israeli manpower, depletes stockpiles, and multiplies enemies faster than it can eliminate them.
Wit is in short supply when cities are under fire and generals are dying, but the dark comedy of the situation is hard to miss. For years the official line treated Iranian capabilities as manageable and Israeli qualitative military edge as permanent. Now the same voices who once dismissed Macgregor as a crank are watching U.S. forces scramble while another round of claims about shattered command structures circulates. Reality has a way of being rude to briefing slides.
None of this requires celebrating Iranian success or wishing harm on Israeli civilians. It requires looking at the correlation of forces without the usual filters. Macgregor’s assessment is consistent: Israel overreached, the United States got pulled into a war it cannot finish on the terms it wanted, and the longer the fighting continues the worse the strategic outcome becomes for the side that started with the bigger air force and the stronger lobby. Tel Aviv getting hit “again” is not an aberration. It is the logical product of a conflict that has already rewritten the regional balance.
America-first instincts should make this obvious. Endless MidEast entanglement has a price, and the invoice is coming due in blood, treasure, and credibility. Macgregor has been saying so for months. The latest reports from Tel Aviv are simply the latest data point.
