Dying for the Algorithm: Influencers Keep Getting Hurt or Killed on Camera Chasing Fame

A Lincoln, Nebraska wannabe influencer just joined the long, bloody list of people who treated basic safety like optional DLC. Outside a gun shop, he had his girlfriend film him “instructing” followers on how to handle a newly purchased 9mm. While racking the slide he ignored every rule of firearm safety—treat every gun as loaded, know where it’s pointed, finger off the trigger. The gun went off. The bullet tore through his femoral artery. First responders applied a tourniquet and performed CPR. He went into emergency surgery and remained critical but stable. Even without the video going public and with his name kept quiet, the stunt already got more attention than competent gun handling ever would.

This is a pattern. Across platforms, creators keep trading limbs, lives, and common sense for views, donations, and the chance to trend. The camera rolls, the chat donates, and gravity or physics or a bullet has the final word.

Falls From Heights for the Perfect Shot

Heights remain the most reliable killer. Travel and adventure influencers treat cliffs, waterfalls, bridges, and rooftops like content sets.

• Indian travel influencer Aanvi Kamdar, 27, slipped while filming an Instagram Reel near Kumbhe Waterfall in Maharashtra in July 2024. She fell roughly 300 feet into a gorge. Rescuers spent hours pulling her out; she died of her injuries shortly after.
• Fourteen-year-old Myanmar TikToker Moe Sa Nay (around 150,000 followers) was posing for selfies at the top of Sinywa Waterfall in July 2024 when she slipped, was swept into the current, and drowned after becoming trapped between rocks.
• British free-climber and content creator Lewis Stevenson, 26, fell from the 630-foot Castilla-La Mancha bridge in Spain in October 2024 while filming social media content. He died of head injuries.
• In Tbilisi, Georgia, Arina Glazunova (reported ages 24–27) was filming a TikTok with a friend in September 2024 when she tripped over a low wall above subway stairs. The fall broke her neck and caused fatal head injuries; the moment is on camera.
• Chinese crane operator and Douyin creator Xiao Qiumei, 23, fell about 160 feet from a crane in 2021 while recording content; her phone was still in her hand when she hit the ground.
• Hong Kong Instagrammer Sophia (Sofia) Cheung, 32, slipped from a waterfall edge in 2021 while taking photos and died.
• Chinese “rooftopper” Wu Yongning, 26, filmed himself doing pull-ups off the edge of a 62-story building in Changsha in 2017 for prize money and content. He lost his grip and fell; the camera kept rolling.

The High on Life YouTube crew (Ryker Gamble, Alexey Lyakh, and Megan Scraper) died in 2018 at Shannon Falls in British Columbia. Scraper slipped into the water; the two men went in after her. All three went over the falls. They specialized in high-risk adventure content.

Stunts That Became Epitaphs

Some deaths are pure “hold my beer” energy captured for the channel.

In 2017, Minnesota YouTuber Pedro Ruiz III, 22, convinced his pregnant girlfriend to shoot a .50-caliber Desert Eagle at a hardcover encyclopedia he held against his chest. He believed the book would stop the bullet. It did not. The stunt was filmed. She later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Fitness model and Bravo personality Greg Plitt, 37, was hit and killed by a Metrolink train in Burbank in 2015 while filming workout/promotional content on the tracks. He had done similar shoots before.

Colombian creator Ángel Montoya, 30, jumped from a bridge into a river for a viral stunt in early 2026; video shows him entering the water and struggling. His body was recovered days later downstream.

Live Streams Turned Final Broadcasts

Some die with the audience still watching and chatting.

Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez, 23, was shot and killed during a TikTok Live at her salon in Zapopan in May 2025 by a masked man who entered posing as a delivery driver.

In August 2026, Mexican TikToker Cesar Gastelum (hundreds of thousands of followers) was shot in the head during a livestream outside a fast-food restaurant in Culiacán while filming a prank.

French streamer Raphaël Graven (Jean Pormanove), 46, died in August 2025 during a multi-day Kick marathon that featured prolonged humiliation, beatings, sleep deprivation, and other abuse for donations. Preliminary findings indicated the death was not from traumatic injury by a third party, but the conditions of the stream were extreme.

Spanish streamer Sergio Jiménez died during a New Year’s livestreamed cocaine-and-whisky challenge in late 2025/early 2026. Viewers were still commenting when family found him.

Chinese e-commerce streamer Wang Yefei (“Sister Wang Zha”), 39, collapsed and died during a livestream in March 2026 after repeatedly asking colleagues to call an ambulance.

Russian “trash streaming” cases include a woman freezing to death while her partner continued the broadcast for donations.

The Pattern Is Clear

The incentive structure is broken. Platforms reward extreme risk. Algorithms surface the dangerous. Viewers fund it with super chats and follows. Creators, often young and chasing relevance, treat physics, firearms safety, and basic risk assessment as suggestions. Some are murdered while live because the stream itself becomes a targeting tool. Others simply misjudge a ledge, a current, a train schedule, or a bullet’s path.

The Nebraska gun-shop incident is mild by comparison—he is still alive. Many others are not. Their final content is the evidence of how they died. In the attention economy, that is sometimes the only lasting product.

Fame is temporary. Gravity, ballistics, and rivers are not.
