A woman walked up to an upscale Italian restaurant in the heart of Moscow Saturday evening carrying what looked like a birthday present. Security stopped her at the door of the Balzi Rossi near Kudrinskaya Square. The “gift” detonated.
Five people are dead. Twenty-one more are wounded. The intended target, according to multiple Russian Telegram channels and early reports, was celebrating his 55th birthday inside: Colonel General Aleksandr Chayko, the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of Russia’s Aerospace Forces and a man Ukraine has long accused of war crimes tied to the early days of the invasion, including Bucha.
Chayko himself appears to have survived. Unconfirmed but circulating reports claim his daughter was injured and his son-in-law may have been among the dead. The bomber and the security guard who stopped her were killed instantly. Russian authorities are treating it as a terrorist attack. The National Anti-Terrorism Committee says the device was packed with shrapnel and roughly the force of a kilogram of TNT. Some investigators believe the woman may have been an unwitting courier and that the bomb was detonated remotely once she was stopped.
This was not a random act. It was a signature play.
The Same Playbook as the Tatarsky Hit
In April 2023, a young woman named Darya Trepova walked into a St. Petersburg café and handed military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky a statuette of himself as a “gift.” It exploded in his hands, killing him and wounding dozens. Trepova was later sentenced to 27 years. Russian authorities and many independent observers tied the operation to Ukrainian intelligence services. The Moscow restaurant attack used the exact same tactic: a woman, a gift box, an IED, and a high-value Russian military or pro-war figure in a public or semi-public setting.
These are not battlefield losses. These are targeted, deniable assassinations conducted deep inside Russia.
The Growing Body Count of Russian Brass
Since the full-scale war began in February 2022, Russia has lost a striking number of generals and senior officers—some on the front lines, others far from them in Moscow and its suburbs. Independent tallies put confirmed general-officer deaths at 15 to 19 or higher depending on the source. The ones that matter most for understanding the current pattern are the ones killed away from the fighting:
- Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, was killed in December 2024 outside his Moscow apartment by a bomb hidden in an electric scooter. Ukraine’s SBU claimed responsibility and called him a war criminal for alleged chemical weapons use.
- Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior officer in the General Staff’s Main Operations Directorate, died in a car bombing in the Moscow suburb of Balashikha in April 2025.
- Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, was killed by a car bomb in southern Moscow in December 2025. Russian investigators immediately pointed at Ukrainian intelligence.
Add the earlier battlefield losses of generals such as Andrei Sukhovetsky, Vladimir Frolov, Oleg Tsokov, Sergei Goryachev and others, and a clear picture emerges. Ukraine has systematically gone after the officers who plan, train, and execute the war—both at the front and in the rear. Car bombs, scooter bombs, and gift bombs have become tools of a shadow campaign that the Western press largely treats as “resistance” when it succeeds and barely covers when it fails or kills civilians.

Chayko’s near-miss at his own birthday party is simply the latest chapter. The woman with the gift bomb failed to take out the general. She still managed to turn a private celebration into a crime scene and remind everyone that the war is no longer confined to the trenches of Donbas or Kharkiv. It is being fought in Moscow restaurants, parking lots, and apartment courtyards.
