Texas voters already did the hard part. They took a four-term establishment fixture named John Cornyn and dropped him like a bad habit. Ken Paxton, the actual fighter who spent years going after the Biden regime’s lawfare and open borders, crushed him by nearly 28 points in the May runoff after President Trump gave the only endorsement that mattered.
That should have been the end of the story. A quiet exit, a polite wave, and a soft landing into the usual post-Senate enrichment opportunities that seem to await every Republican who spent years talking conservative while voting like a Democrat.
Instead, Cornyn decided his remaining months in the Senate were the perfect time to become the official spokesman for every RINO still hiding under the desk.
He and fellow soon-to-be-unemployed senator Thom Tillis have spent the last stretch of July holding up Todd Blanche’s confirmation as attorney general. Their stated reason? Concerns over a settlement that includes an anti-weaponization fund meant to help people the previous Justice Department tried to destroy — including January 6 defendants railroaded by a politicized DOJ. In other words, they are fighting the very accountability voters demanded.
Cornyn has also been busy dismissing the SAVE America Act as dead on arrival and complaining about any attempt to cancel the August recess so the Senate can actually secure elections. The same man who spent years claiming he was a border hawk somehow finds endless energy to slow-walk the things that would make it harder for non-citizens to vote.
Then came the classic Cornyn move. When President Trump called out the obstruction, the Texas senator didn’t defend his position on the merits. He instead announced that the concerns weren’t limited to him and Tillis — implying a larger, unnamed group of Republican senators shared his objections.
Genius.
Nothing says “clever strategy” like a man whose political career is already over volunteering to out the rest of the holdouts. As The Federalist noted, Cornyn and Tillis are functioning as human shields for colleagues who prefer to oppose the president’s agenda from the shadows while letting the lame ducks absorb the public heat.

Every time Cornyn opens his mouth, he hands the America First movement a new list of names to research, primary, and retire. He thinks he’s protecting the old guard. In reality, he’s doing the political equivalent of standing on a street corner with a megaphone yelling “Here are the other people who still think this is 2015!”
This is not new behavior from Cornyn. He was the reliable salesman for gun-control “compromises,” the senator who kept trying to cut amnesty deals, and the man who treated Trump like an embarrassing relative rather than the leader who delivered the biggest Republican popular vote in a generation. Texas finally caught up. Now the rest of the country is watching the encore.
Trump doesn’t have to hunt every last RINO himself. Some of them keep volunteering for the job. Cornyn is currently the most energetic recruiter the MAGA movement could ask for.
The message to the remaining Senate holdouts is simple: keep letting this guy speak for you. Keep letting him tell the public that “plenty of us feel the same way.” The voters are taking notes, and they have a long memory and a short fuse.
Cornyn lost his primary. He is free to spend his final months as a free agent. What he is not free to do is drag the rest of the Republican conference down with him without consequences. Every press conference, every pointed tweet, every claim that “it’s not just me” is another gift to the people who actually want the swamp drained instead of merely rearranged.

Tillis and Cornyn have refused to vote for Blanche as the full-time attorney general unless it is put in writing that Trump will no longer pursue the “anti-weaponization fund,” a nearly $1.8 billion fund to pay people who claim they were politically persecuted, which was announced in May as part of a settlement to resolve the president’s lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department. – CBS News
