The Left dominates gaslighting for a reason: They control over 90% of all media and they use their propaganda networks far better than Republicans could ever hope to with such a disadvantage. So what is gaslighting?
Gaslighting, in politics, is the attempt to make you distrust what you saw, heard, or remember, so the official story can replace it.
The word comes from the 1938 play Gas Light (and the 1944 film Gaslight). A husband dims the gas lamps, then tells his wife she is imagining it. He hides objects, denies conversations, and treats her alarm as proof she is unstable. The point is not one lie. It is a campaign to make the target the unreliable narrator of her own life.
That is the test. Ordinary spin says “this is good.” A lie says “this did not happen.” Gaslighting says “you are crazy for thinking it happened,” or “it happened, but not the way you remember, and only a bad person would insist otherwise.” Democrats do this on a daily basis and we here at Whatfinger catch them each time, making our readers the smartest in America.

The pattern
Political gaslighting usually runs in a sequence:
- Something visible occurs: footage, a price, a vote, a quote, a policy.
- Institutions deny the plain reading, or rename it. – Democrats excel at renaming everything and having their narrative stick thanks to media control.
- People who keep the original description are called dupes, bigots, conspiracy theorists, or threats, or racists. Sound familiar?
- Later the same institutions quietly adopt the denied description, without admitting the earlier denial.
The manipulation sits in steps 2 and 3. Step 4 is how you know it was not an honest mistake. The Democrats and their media are experts in this nonsense. They will never stop trying it.

What it is not
Disagreement is not gaslighting. A bad prediction is not gaslighting. A politician changing his mind and saying so is not gaslighting. Selective emphasis and ordinary propaganda are older and broader.
The term got watered down because it is useful as an insult. Once every unfavorable headline is “gaslighting,” the word stops naming anything. The original meaning requires an attack on the audience’s perception, not just a claim the audience dislikes.

Here’s an excellent fast clip you can shove in the faces of ANYONE who says Trump is a felon. It is such BS that it is not funny – see:
How it shows up
A few cases that fit the mechanism, not merely the partisan complaint:
- Renaming the footage. In 2020, blocks of American cities burned on camera while major outlets led with “mostly peaceful protests.” The fires were real. The phrase trained viewers to treat the fires as the distraction and the slogan as the event.
- The secure border lie. For years officials said the southern border was secure, or “under control,” while encounters, got-aways, and city shelter crises were measurable and local. The claim was not a dispute about the right policy. It was a denial of the count.
- The truncated quote. “Very fine people on both sides” was repeated for years as if Trump had praised neo-Nazis in Charlottesville. The same press conference includes his explicit condemnation of neo-Nazis and white nationalists, and a distinction about the statue debate. Clipping the condemnation and then treating anyone who cites the rest as a defender of Nazis is the lamp-dimming move.
- Lab leak. Calling a lab origin for COVID a racist conspiracy, then treating it as a live hypothesis once the politics shifted, without a reckoning for the earlier certainty.

Why it works in politics
It works best when three things line up: a loud institution (party, agency, network), a moral penalty for dissent, and a short news cycle. You do not have to fool everyone. You only have to make the cost of trusting your own eyes higher than the cost of repeating the line. Social media accelerated it, because the correction and the original claim now live in the same feed, and the institution can call the correction misinformation in real time.
The practical defense is boring. Keep the primary source: the vote, the price index, the full clip, the date-stamped footage. Ask whether the speaker is disputing your conclusion or your memory. If they are disputing your memory, and the record is sitting right there, that is the term.
