Whatfinger News — Michael Anthony, Health Writer
    September 30, 2026

Everyone at Whatfinger News knows that I am a no bullshit type of person. I have researched the supposed Blue Zones, and what I found will astonish you,. GUARANTEED…. or maybe not, as we at Whatfinger have a reputation for outing the bullshit out there. Well, this is important on many levels, as we’ve been sold a lie on human lifespans.

Dan Buettner circled five patches of Earth, painted them blue, and told America the secret to 100 was beans, gardens, and a little wine. National Geographic put it on the map. Netflix put it on the couch. Grocery aisles grew a new religion called “Blue Zones.”

Then the governments that actually pay the pensions went looking for the birthday boys.

A lot of them were dead.

Tokyo’s oldest man was a corpse in pajamas

Start with the story the diet books skip. In 2010, Tokyo officials went to congratulate Sogen Kato, listed as the city’s oldest man, on his 111th birthday. Relatives had been waving people off for years. Family said he had “become a living Buddha.” Police finally forced the door. Kato was in bed in his pajamas. Mummified. Dead since 1978. His people had been cashing the pension for three decades.

That one corpse was enough to make Japan count.

Dr. Ken Berry sat down this week with Saul Newman, the researcher who spent years tearing the age files apart, and the interview is making the rounds for a reason. The Blue Zone pitch was always a lifestyle catalog. The records look like a fraud file with a travel budget. See that video and read the rest of this article below it for important details.

Japan – The Justice Ministry audited the koseki family registers and reported 234,354 people listed as 100 or older whose whereabouts could not be confirmed. If the paperwork were real, 77,118 of them would have been 120-plus. 884 would have been 150 or older — Edo-period birthdays still open on a modern ledger.

The ministry blamed sloppy bookkeeping. Families not reporting deaths. People who vanished after the war. Some who moved and never told city hall. And some who kept the checks coming after grandma stopped coming to dinner.

The Health Ministry, working a different list, said it could put addresses on roughly 40,000 living centenarians. Newman’s cut of the mess is the line now circulating on X: about 82 percent of the paper 100-year-olds were missing, imaginary, clerical errors, or dead. “Their paperwork is in order,” he likes to say. “They’re just dead.”

Japan’s average life expectancy is still high. That number comes from vital statistics, not from the family-register carnival. What collapsed is the sales pitch that Japan is a factory for validated 110-year-olds, and that Okinawa is the factory floor. We have been scammed for profits as well as to convince you that meat is bad. Same culprits folks.

The poster island fell off Japan’s own chart

Okinawa was the postcard. Warm water, purple sweet potatoes, “hara hachi bu,” old women in gardens, a 100th birthday on every block. Time called it the world’s No. 1 longevity village. Buettner put it in the five.

Japan’s own prefecture (Their states) life tables tell a colder story.

Okinawa men held the No. 1 life-expectancy rank in 1980 and 1985. By 2020 they were 43rd out of 47 prefectures. Okinawa women sat at No. 1 from 1975 through 2005. In 2020 they were 16th, first time outside the top ten. Male obesity hit 41.6 percent in 2021, worst in the country. Female obesity ran above the national average. Diabetes deaths, once the island’s brag, crossed the Japanese mean.

Newman’s line on the food is ruder than the life tables. Japan has been asking Okinawans what they eat since the Americans handed the prefecture back. On those surveys, he says, Okinawa finishes last among 47 prefectures for vegetables and last for the famous sweet potatoes. Meat is not the villain in the local data. The cookbook needed a villain, so meat got the job.

Okinawa’s wartime records were wrecked. Ages got rebuilt. A rebuilt age plus a pension plus a National Geographic photographer is how you get a “zone.” Yeah…the Woke pulled a major one over on us all for decades.

Greece, Costa Rica, Sardinia — same smell

Ikaria in Greece was sold as the island that forgot to die. In 2012, with the EU and IMF standing on its neck, Athens cut benefits to about 200,000 people who were dead, ineligible, or both. Officials had already noticed an odd pile of “centenarians” on the pension rolls — on the order of 9,000 names. Newman’s estimate: roughly 72 percent of Greece’s listed 100-year-olds were dead or pension fiction. After the audits, Ikaria’s miracle rate came back to earth.

Costa Rica’s Nicoya peninsula got the same treatment. Research after the 2000 census found 42 percent of people listed as 99 or older had misstated their age. Clean the file and the “lowest middle-age mortality on Earth” story shrinks. Newman says old-age life expectancy in that cleaned data dropped from world-beating to near the bottom of the pack.

Sardinia’s Barbagia hills were billed as a plant plate with shepherds. The men there eat meat. The island’s extreme-age claims sit in poor, remote communes with the kind of paperwork that makes a demographer reach for a drink.

Loma Linda, California, was the American garnish. Reporting in the last two years has Buettner adding it because a National Geographic editor wanted a U.S. pin on the map. Seventh-day Adventists in that town do live longer than the average American smoker with a desk job. So do Mormons in Utah. That is church, no smoking, and showing up on Sunday. It is not a secret zone painted blue so a city can buy a wellness certificate.

Italy had already lived this movie. In 1997, tens of thousands of “pensioners” turned out to be dead and still cashing.

Newman’s ugly pattern, the one that won him an Ig Nobel in 2024, is simple. The places that mint supercentenarians on paper also tend to be poor, short on birth certificates, and long on reasons to keep a dead relative enrolled. High crime. Low literacy. Weak registries. Fewer people actually making it to 90 than the 110-year-old headlines would require. “Every map is a poverty map,” epidemiologists joke. The Blue Zone map fits.

They sold the diet. They sold the towns. They sold the fear of steak.

Blue Zones became a company. Books. Meal plans. Municipal contracts. In April 2020, Adventist Health bought the brand. Loma Linda is Adventist country. The circle closed without anyone needing a new birth certificate.

The “Power 9” list — move naturally, eat plants, find purpose, put family first — is a motivational poster. Some of it is ordinary good advice. Do not smoke. Do not drink yourself to death. Walk. Have people who notice if you stop showing up. None of that required a fake 115-year-old or a sweet-potato theology that Okinawa’s own surveys do not support.

The product was certainty. Eat this way and you will outrun the actuarial tables. The data under the certainty was family registers that still listed 150-year-olds, Greek pension files with corpses on them, and a Costa Rican census where two in five “almost 100” had shaved years the other direction.

Buettner’s shop and a group of Blue Zone demographers have fired back. They say Newman’s paper is a preprint, that he smeared whole countries instead of the tiny validated pockets, and that Okinawa turned up zero missing centenarians in the 2010 proof-of-life sweep. They published a reply in The Gerontologist. Fair enough. Read it. Then read Japan’s 234,354. Read the mummy in Adachi Ward. Read Okinawa men at 43rd. The marketing still needs the halo of 100. The halo is what paid for the cookbooks.

On X this week the line is shorter than a journal fight. Ken Berry posted the Newman conversation and said the plant-food legend does not survive the records. Other accounts called the zones a pension scam with better lighting. That is the correct temperature.

Japan has long-lived people. So does Italy. So does a quiet American town that skipped cigarettes and Saturday night. What it does not have is a magic island where almost everybody hits 100 on beans, and the government just forgot to mention the ones who had been dead since the Carter administration.

If a diet book needs a corpse in pajamas to keep the centenarian count up, put the book down. Eat real food. Walk. Skip the zone. We here at Whatfinger News never bullshit you. We update you with the latest info, regardless of the attacks to come. One thing is certain, the ‘Blue Zones’ are a scam. Remember that th next time your own doctor lies to your face about it all.
