Female Killer SAVED One Hour Before Her Execution

Christa Pike was reportedly just one hour away from becoming the first woman executed by Tennessee in approximately 200 years. Then a federal appeals court stepped in and stopped everything.
Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Pike was 18 when she and two male accomplices lured Slemmer to an isolated location near Knoxville and killed her.
Thirty years later, witnesses had gathered at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution and the execution was ready to proceed. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals then issued a last-minute stay in a divided 2-1 ruling.
The judges said they needed time to consider whether Pike’s allegations of childhood sexual abuse and rape were properly addressed during sentencing and later court proceedings. The ruling pauses her execution; it does not overturn her conviction or erase her death sentence.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee had already denied clemency, while the Tennessee Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court rejected separate attempts to halt the execution. Tennessee’s attorney general immediately asked the Supreme Court to lift this new stay.
The “female privilege” debate comes from Pike being the only participant sentenced to death and from decades of arguments about executing a woman who committed the crime as a teenager. The court, however, based its stay on unresolved constitutional claims—not expressly on Pike’s sex.
