The postcard is the ruin. The building was paint, metal, water, and cloth.
Origins Explained posted This Is What Ancient Wonders REALLY Looked Like Video is below) on Oct. 1, 2026. Katrina’s open is the whole case: faded stone and broken columns replaced structures that once carried color, gold, gardens, and decoration. The cut runs about 26 minutes and stops at eight sites. The look of each building comes from the sources those rebuilds lean on, and from the argument still running on X.

Abu Simbel, 0:15. Ramesses II cut the Great Temple into a Nubian cliff in the 13th century BC. The facade stands about 30 meters. Four seated colossi, each about 20 meters, wear the double crown, with family and bound Nubians, Libyans, and Hittites at their feet. Reliefs inside, including the Kadesh scenes, were painted, and traces of pigment survive on the statues. Between 1964 and 1968 the temples were sawn into blocks and reset 65 meters higher and about 210 meters northwest, clear of Lake Nasser.
Hanging Gardens, 3:51. This is the wonder with no home address. Babylonian kings stamped their names on bricks and never mentioned a hanging garden. Greek writers did: stone terraces, trees on the roofs, screw pumps lifting water. Stephanie Dalley at Oxford moved the garden to Nineveh and to Sennacherib, about 700 BC. His prism describes bronze screws cast to raise water. A British Museum relief shows an aqueduct feeding a palace garden, and a canal of about 80 kilometers comes out of the mountains to the palace. X is still split. A Vault of History post this week says the gardens may never have existed. An Iraqi account claims them for the Tigris and the Euphrates. Both can sit together only if “Babylon” in the Greek lists meant old Babylon, one of Nineveh’s names.

The Parthenon, 6:19. Finished in 432 BC. Eight columns across the front, which was rare for a Greek temple. Roof tiles cut from marble, not clay. A Rebuilt post on X asked an image model for 432 BC and got the tourist errors: wrong column count, Athena standing in the doorway at twice human height, clay on the roof. The cult statue stood deep in the cella, gold and ivory, about 12 meters, head near the ceiling. Thucydides put the removable gold plates at about 40 talents, on the order of a tonne. Pigment work by Ian Jenkins and Andrew Middleton at the British Museum in 1988 found Egyptian blue on the frieze ground and red ochre on the mouldings. Triglyphs read blue. Metope fields read red. The white temple on the postcard is the stone after the paint died.

The Colosseum, 8:29. Opened in 80 AD under Titus. Ellipse about 188 by 156 meters. Outer wall about 48 meters, 80 arches to a side. Travertine frame, tuff and brick behind it, marble seats, statues in the niches, stucco and paint on the upper orders. The velarium was a sail awning worked by fleet sailors. Modern capacity estimates run 50,000 to 65,000. Domitian added the hypogeum. What a visitor walks is the frame after the marble and the iron clamps were pulled for later Roman jobs. Sgt Pat, one of our editors here at Whatfinger News, is into Lego since he was a kid, and has the full version here in our office in Dallas, Texas.

Solomon’s Temple, 12:40. First Kings 6 gives 60 cubits long, 20 wide, 30 high. At a short cubit near 18 inches, that is about 27 by 9 by 13.5 meters, porch in front, Jachin and Boaz in bronze with lily capitals. Interior cedar, no stone showing, overlaid with gold, carved with cherubim, palms, and open flowers. The inner room was a 20-cubit cube in gold, with two olive-wood cherubim whose wings spanned the width. The curtain was blue, purple, and crimson. Nebuchadnezzar burned the house in 586 BC. No foundation course of that building has been dug on the Mount.

Angkor Wat, 16:30. Suryavarman II, early 1100s. Outer enclosure about 1.5 by 1.3 kilometers, moat about 190 meters wide. Central tower about 65 meters. The lotus-bud spires carried stucco and, in places, gilding. The gray stone on the tourist path is the core after that skin went.
900 years ago, it took 4K+ elephants and one person from every single family in the kingdom, 37 yrs to build this Temple.

Petra, 21:17. Al-Khazneh, 1st century BC, most likely the tomb of Aretas IV. Facade about 40 meters tall and 25 wide, carved from the cliff, then plastered and painted. The rose is the rock. The finish was color on plaster. The urn is solid sandstone. The bullet scars are from men who thought it held gold. Ad Deir, up the steps, is larger, about 45 meters.

Temple of Artemis, 23:24. Ephesus. Antipater of Sidon, the poet behind the early list, said the other six looked smaller once he had seen this one. Pliny counts 127 columns, each a gift of a king, about 60 feet high. The lower drums were carved in the round, the columnae caelatae, and pieces of them sit in the British Museum. Croesus paid for an earlier house on the site. Herostratus burned the famous one in 356 BC, the night Alexander was born, if that story holds. The rebuild stood until the Goths in 262. One column has been stood back up on the marsh.
The video leaves four of the canonical seven on the table. X is still arguing those.
The Great Pyramid is the one still standing. Original height 146.6 meters, now 138.5, after the Tura limestone casing and the capstone came off. Khafre still wears a patch of that white casing at the peak, which is why the second pyramid can look taller. About 2.3 million blocks, some 6 million tonnes, base 230 meters, aligned to true north within a few arcminutes. It was the tallest human-made structure from about 2560 BC (Or so we think – but many think it is 15K years old or older) until Lincoln Cathedral in 1311. The gold tip in every AI rebuild is the part the record will not sign. Other pyramids had gilded pyramidia. Khufu’s capstone is gone. The Wadi el-Jarf papyri, Inspector Merer, Year 27 of Khufu, log the boats that brought the Tura blocks to the plateau. Or so they say. Many think this is total BS, and it is much older. Khufu only added to it, as many local Kings did to such locations around the world.
The white casing in that comparison is the documented part. The pure-gold peak is the tourist guess.

The Colossus stood about 33 meters, 70 cubits in Pliny, built by Chares of Lindos from 292 to 280 BC. Bronze skin over an iron frame, stone packed in the legs, paid for with the siege engines Demetrius left behind: 300 talents, 12 years. An earthquake dropped it in 226 BC. Pliny saw it lying down. Few men could hug the thumb. Broken limbs opened into caves. It did not straddle Mandraki. The harbor mouth is hundreds of feet across, the legs could not have carried that span, and the wind would have finished what a quake started. The ship-between-the-feet picture is a medieval invention, and image models still draw it.
The Pharos went up around 280 BC under Sostratus of Cnidus for Ptolemy. Square base, octagon, cylinder, a statue on top, fire by night. Height estimates run 100 to 140 meters. Jean-Claude Golvin’s watercolor is the reconstruction circulating on X this week. Quakes from 956 through 1323 took it down. The Qaitbay citadel of 1480 is built out of the wreck.
Zeus at Olympia was Phidias, about 435 BC, seated, about 12 meters. Ivory for the flesh, gold for the robes, a throne of cedar, ebony, ivory, and jewels. Pausanias says a pool of olive oil in front kept the ivory from cracking. The statue was hauled to Constantinople and lost to fire in the 5th century.
The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, about 350 BC, was the tomb of Mausolus and Artemisia. Pliny: 36 columns, a 24-step pyramid, a four-horse chariot on top, 140 feet in all. Excavation puts the podium near 38 by 32 meters. Scopas, Bryaxis, Leochares, and Timotheus carved it. It stood into the Middle Ages. The Knights of St. John pulled the marble for Bodrum castle. Fragments are in the British Museum.
