He called Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham exactly what she is: an American hero. Cunningham said the quiet part out loud — that she wants to protect young girls from competing against and sharing locker rooms with biological males. Polls show roughly 70 percent of Americans agree. Common sense is not left or right. It is just common sense. The backlash she received for stating biological reality is the same pressure that keeps most WNBA players silent.
Freedom is done with the silence.
Earlier this month he made it official. He declared for the 2027 WNBA Draft. Not because he suddenly discovered a new identity. Because the league’s own rules and the public statements of many of its players and coaches treat self-identification as the only requirement that matters. If simply declaring who you are is enough, then a 6-foot-10 former NBA center who has gone through male puberty meets every stated criterion. Freedom has publicly noted the financial incentive: G-League money versus top WNBA salaries. Rules are rules, he keeps repeating. If biology is irrelevant, then the separate leagues themselves become indefensible.
The campaign has escalated exactly as expected. Freedom posted workout clips under the banner “Let ‘The Transition’ begin.” He joked about dunking on Angel Reese and becoming the modern Kobe-and-Shaq duo with Caitlin Clark. He showed up courtside at the Indiana Fever–Chicago Sky game in Chicago wearing a black shirt that simply defined the word: “WOMAN noun. adult human female.” He supported Sophie Cunningham. Natasha Cloud, an outspoken progressive player, confronted him. Freedom was ejected.
His post afterward was pure Enes: “I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!”
The league’s response has been the familiar one. Officials denounce “bad-faith efforts” and insist there are no immediate eligibility issues. That is the point. The absence of a clear biological standard is the vulnerability. So are the silent majority of WNBA players who know exactly what is at stake but calculate the professional price of saying it out loud. Freedom’s message to them is the same one he delivers to the kids at his camps: stand up. This is not complicated.
The league that markets itself as empowering women is now being forced to explain why a 6-foot-10 man who has lived as a man his entire life can claim eligibility under the current framework. Either the word “woman” still means something rooted in biology, or it doesn’t. Enes Freedom is making sure the question cannot be ignored.
