In the summer of 2026, an 83-year-old Christian great-grandmother named Brigitte Stegemann—lovingly called “GG” by four generations of family—was killed by lethal injection in a long-term care home in Belleville, Ontario. She had Stage IV stomach cancer. She had repeatedly declined Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) because it violated her Christian faith. She wanted a natural death. Her family, including the granddaughter who held her power of attorney and had cared for her for more than twelve years, opposed it. Yet on July 10, staff and a physician proceeded anyway.
This is not “choice.” This is the logical end of a system that has already turned Canada into one of the most aggressive euthanasia regimes on Earth. What began as a narrow exception for the terminally suffering has become a machine that pressure-cooks the elderly, the cognitively impaired, the isolated, and the inconvenient into early graves—sometimes against their own clear prior wishes and the desperate objections of their families.
The Last Days of GG
Stegemann had lived at The Pearl (formerly E.J. McQuigge Lodge) for two years. Her granddaughter Brigitte Kranendonk, named after her, was the primary caregiver and legal decision-maker. Staff routinely called her about medications and care. Roughly two months before the killing, Stegemann was asked about MAiD and firmly refused. As a devout Christian, she said it conflicted with her beliefs.
While Kranendonk was away on a 10-day vacation, facility staff held private conversations with the elderly woman about euthanasia—without notifying the family or any independent advocate. When the granddaughter returned, the process accelerated. On July 7, a capacity assessment took place. Stegemann could not correctly answer basic questions about her own family. She was one of 14 children; she said she had none or one. She grew distressed and confused. The family was ordered out of the room. The physician emerged and declared her capable. The death was scheduled for July 10—before official paperwork was even completed. Facility staff later filled out and witnessed the forms themselves.
On July 8, when the date was briefly advanced because the doctor had an opening, Stegemann wept and asked her granddaughter in confusion and fear: “I’m going to die Friday? They’re going to kill me Friday?” She said she had made a mistake. The family reassured her she could still refuse.
On the morning of July 10, the family took her outside in her wheelchair for fresh air and a scoop of her favorite strawberry ice cream while waiting for her pastor. Staff soon insisted she be brought back inside early so an IV could be started. The insertion was messy—family members described a shocking amount of blood. When the physician arrived, Stegemann sat silent, hands folded in a prayer position. She gave no verbal confirmation. The family had been assured that final express consent would be required that day. It was ignored. The injection went ahead. GG was dead.
Her family has called it a systemic failure of arrogance, secrecy, and disregard for the very safeguards that were supposed to protect the vulnerable. They are seeking accountability. So far, the Canadian system that produced this outcome has offered little more than silence.
This Is Not an Isolated Horror
Canada legalized MAiD in 2016. By the end of 2024, Health Canada reported 76,475 people had been killed under the program. In 2024 alone, 16,499 received MAiD—more than 5 percent of all deaths in the country. The growth rate has slowed, but the absolute numbers keep climbing. In some Quebec regions the rate has approached or exceeded 1 in 10 deaths.
What was sold as compassion for the dying has expanded to people whose natural deaths are not reasonably foreseeable, to those whose primary suffering is social isolation, poverty, housing insecurity, or untreated mental illness, and to cases where capacity is disputed and family objections are brushed aside. Ontario death review committees have flagged cases involving caregiver burnout, social vulnerability, and questionable capacity assessments. There have been documented breaches of guidelines, rushed processes, and situations where patients were not meaningfully offered alternatives that might have relieved their distress.
When a cognitively impaired Christian grandmother who previously said “no” can be steered into a lethal injection while her power-of-attorney granddaughter is sidelined, the “safeguards” are theater. The system prioritizes the schedule of the provider and the bureaucratic momentum of the program over the actual will of the patient and the moral authority of the family.
A Warning, Not an Abstraction
Right-thinking people outside Canada should pay attention. The same progressive logic that produced this—life as a quality-of-life calculation, autonomy as the highest good even when capacity is compromised, death as a medical “service” the state must efficiently deliver—is advancing in multiple Western jurisdictions. Once the state and the medical establishment claim the power to decide when a life is no longer worth living, the definition of “intolerable suffering” expands to fit whatever is administratively convenient or fiscally attractive.
Brigitte Stegemann wanted to die the old-fashioned way: in God’s time, with her family near, praying. Canada’s MAiD apparatus denied her that. Her silence and folded hands on the day of her death were not consent. They were the last quiet protest of a woman who never wanted this.
This is what a culture of death looks like when it stops pretending. Families who still believe human life has intrinsic dignity—especially the elderly, the frail, and the faithful—need to understand that the machine is already running. In Canada, it just claimed another grandmother.
