A Colorado mom went to lower her air conditioner so her daughter could sleep. Her “smart” thermostat looked her in the face and said no.

The message on the screen was blunt: she was not allowed to lower the temperature because the regional energy grid was stressed. Her set point sat locked at 79 degrees. This happened with Xcel Energy in Colorado. The woman, Kyri Baker (a CU Boulder engineering professor who studies power systems, of all things), had enrolled in the utility’s voluntary AC Rewards-style demand-response program. They dangled the usual $50–$150 signup credit and annual peanuts. In exchange, she handed them remote control of her own air conditioner.

How They Get You

These programs are sold as neighborly and voluntary. Sign up for a Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell, or similar Wi-Fi thermostat. Let the utility nudge your cooling setpoint up a few degrees (usually 1–4°F) on hot afternoons when the grid is straining. Most of the time you can override it. On “rare” emergency days — the ones that keep happening — they lock it. No override. Your house. Their rules.

Xcel has been running versions of this for years. In 2022 they locked out roughly 22,000 Colorado customers during an “energy emergency” after a coal plant unit went down in the heat. Homes climbed into the mid-to-high 80s. Customers who thought they still had a say discovered the fine print: in a real emergency, the override disappears.

The same model is rolling out across the country. Arizona, California, Florida, Texas retail providers, Oregon, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, and more all run “Bring Your Own Thermostat” or AC cycling programs. The pitch is always the same: a little bill credit, help the grid, be a good citizen. The reality is remote control of the one appliance that keeps your family from baking.

This Is Not About Saving the Planet

It is about managing scarcity created by policy.

Reliable baseload power — coal, natural gas, nuclear — has been systematically attacked and retired under the climate religion. Intermittent wind and solar get prioritized and subsidized. When the sun sets or the wind dies during a heat wave, the grid tightens. Suddenly the “voluntary” program becomes the only tool left short of rolling blackouts. Data centers for AI and surveillance infrastructure keep growing. Your family’s comfort is the adjustable load.

The pattern is classic: start optional to normalize it, collect data, expand enrollment, then tighten the screws when the system they broke starts failing. Today it is “you can always opt out.” Tomorrow it is “for the community.” The same people who cheered vaccine mandates and lockdowns are now deciding the temperature of your living room.

Americans who still believe their home is their castle are waking up to a different reality. The smart thermostat is not just convenient. It is a permanent remote access port into the one place left that used to be private. Once the hardware is in and the program is enrolled, the utility — and the regulators who oversee them — hold the keys.

The MAGA Reality Check

This is what happens when energy policy is driven by ideology instead of engineering. Abundant, dispatchable American energy means no one has to beg a utility for permission to cool their house. Scarcity engineered by politicians and activists means rationing — first by price, then by remote control.

Kyri Baker herself noted the obvious problem: infants, the elderly, and people with health conditions should never be locked out. She found a way to opt out after the fact. Most people will not. Most people will not even read the terms before chasing the $100 credit.

If you value control of your own home, do not enroll. Stick with a dumb thermostat that has no internet connection. Or buy a used one from the 1990s. The “smart” future is looking a lot less free.

Your AC is not a shared community resource. It is yours. Act like it. Never let them control you like this.
