Food assistance for struggling families allegedly became a multimillion-dollar payday. Federal prosecutors say social media personality Shawty Dred controlled more than 350 fraudulent SNAP accounts created using stolen identities. Authorities allege roughly $4.6 million was transferred into those accounts and approximately $4 million was siphoned out. He was arrested on October 13, with the case announced October 21.
The allegations land alongside a broader enforcement surge involving nearly $42 million in SNAP-related intended losses. These are separate cases, not one giant theft by a single defendant. We’re breaking down the alleged scheme, the luxury lifestyle highlighted by investigators and the damage fraud does to taxpayers and families who need food assistance. Shawty Dred’s charges remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent pending trial.
Welfare Scammers Steal Billions While Families Get Shorted
Atlanta influencer Mercedes Reshard New, better known as Shawty Dred, allegedly ran more than 350 fake SNAP accounts using stolen identities. Prosecutors say roughly $4.6 million landed in those accounts between January 2020 and July 2026, with about $4 million drained out. He faces 63 federal counts, including mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, and SNAP fraud. Agents arrested him October 13.
Vice President JD Vance put it plain during a fraud task force update: the man took food from the mouths of children so he could enrich himself. Court papers and social media posts show the alleged proceeds funded private jets, luxury cars, stacks of cash, and even videos of him burning money.
Some Somali woman jumped online to defend the fraudsters and scammers who stole millions in taxpayer money. She called them “capitalists,” claimed Somalis are brilliant at politics and business, and smeared any American who points out the obvious as racist and jealous.
If they’re really that genius-level intelligent, then explain these numbers from Minnesota:
• 81% of Somali immigrant households are on some form of public assistance
• 54% are using SNAP
• 27% are collecting cash welfare
• 73% have at least one member on Medicaid
• 89% of households with children are living off government benefits“Brilliant entrepreneurs” don’t need four out of five households on the dole while also running massive fraud schemes against the same taxpayers. This isn’t jealousy or racism, it’s basic arithmetic and accountability. The data exposes the gap between the PR and reality.

That case sits inside a bigger enforcement push. From early September into late October 2026, federal prosecutors and the USDA hit more than 40 defendants tied to nearly $42 million in SNAP-related losses, part of almost $45 million overall in intended hits on related programs. Some involved illegal immigrants using stolen U.S. identities, including from dead citizens.
One Dominican national, Fernandez Guzman, allegedly stole a U.S. citizen’s name and Social Security number. That got him more than $22,000 in SNAP, over $98,000 in Massachusetts health benefits, and about $45,500 in Section 8 housing help. Officials said he was suspected of being in the country unlawfully and had picked up fake IDs and licenses in multiple states.
Haitian nationals and others have been arrested in similar SNAP schemes. Romanian crews have skimmed EBT cards and bought bulk goods like energy drinks for resale. Yemeni nationals face charges for processing fake transactions through stores.
🚨 HUGE: Trump just turned every American into a FRAUD HUNTER.
The new Fraud Whistleblower Incentive Program lets anyone report fraud at https://t.co/XVTU1E4nTj and get PAID for it.
Trump says tipsters will get a 1% commission on the fraud they help uncover.
Today’s fraud isn’t some lone welfare cheat. It’s people setting up companies to bill Medicaid and SNAP using poor people’s identities.
None of it is hidden. There’s just so much of it.
JD Vance put it best: “If you want to help us stop it, you get to share in the rewards.”
Know a scam in your neighborhood? Turn it in.

SNAP is only one piece. The program’s own 2025 payment error rate hit 10.62 percent, which USDA pegged at about $10.1 billion in improper payments nationwide. That covers overpayments, underpayments, and cases where states never properly checked who was eligible or how much they should get. Trafficking turns benefits into cash at a discount. Recipients sell EBT balances to stores or middlemen. Application fraud means lying about income, household size, or work status. Identity theft and multi-state enrollment let people collect in places they do not live. Dead people stay on the rolls in some audits.
Medicaid runs far larger. The 2025 improper payment estimate stood at $37.4 billion, or about 6.1 percent of the program. Provider schemes drive a big share: personal care attendants billing for hours never worked, labs charging for tests never done or done over and over, and paperwork so thin that reviewers cannot confirm the claim. Audits have found payments on behalf of people who died years earlier. Identity mismatches and duplicate enrollments show up in reviews of both Medicaid and food stamps.
🚨 Pennsylvania welfare supervisor accused of stealing $20K in food stamps and trading EBT cards for crack.
Sheila McDonald, 46, a former clerical supervisor and EBT coordinator in Allentown, allegedly stole 48 EBT cards, activated them with recipients’ info, and ran 270 unauthorized transactions totaling $20,558.
Surveillance allegedly shows her using the cards for groceries and cash. A witness claims she traded stolen cards and PINs for crack cocaine.
She faces six felonies: theft, access device fraud, and criminal conspiracy. Affected households had benefits replaced.
What should a government employee face for stealing from families in need?

Section 8 housing assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families cash, Supplemental Security Income, and unemployment insurance all carry the same basic risks. People hide income or side work. They claim disabilities they do not have. They use stolen names to open accounts. During the pandemic the unemployment system saw massive fraud rings, and the same identity-theft tactics never fully went away. Across federal programs, the Government Accountability Office put improper payments near $186 billion in fiscal year 2025. Medicaid and SNAP ranked among the biggest drivers.
Immigrant households show higher rates of using means-tested programs than native-born ones in Census data analyzed by the Center for Immigration Studies—53 percent versus 37 percent for at least one major benefit. Illegal immigrants face tighter formal eligibility rules, but stolen identities bypass those checks, as the recent Massachusetts and other cases illustrate. Noncitizen fraud convictions have been lower per capita in some federal sentencing data, yet the absolute dollar losses and the specific illegal-alien prosecutions still hit taxpayers and legitimate recipients hard.
Rep. Derrick Van Orden dropped the hammer on rampant welfare & healthcare fraud!
186,000 DEAD people were just removed from SNAP, plus 189,000 illegally dual-enrolled in Medicare & Medicaid while insurers, PBMs & brokers cash in on YOUR tax dollars!
Democrats let this corrupt racket rob hardworking taxpayers blind, while House Republicans are auditing the books, ending the fraud, and protecting your wallet.

Every dollar skimmed, trafficked, or billed under a fake name is a dollar that does not reach a family that actually needs groceries, rent help, or medical care. States that fail to verify identities, cross-check death records, or limit replacement EBT cards make the problem easier. Federal crackdowns like the recent SNAP surge show the scale once investigators dig in. Tracking these patterns matters for anyone watching how tax money moves and who ends up paying for the gaps. On the election side, voters keep ranking government waste and border control high when pollsters ask.
Whatfinger News is following the cases as more charges drop. The pattern is the same across programs: weak checks, stolen names, and people who treat the system like an ATM.
