JOHN KENNEDY: “If we do reconciliation, we don’t need any Democratic votes, we do have to get the permission of the parliamentarian, but there’s a way to craft a voter integrity bill, the so-called SAVE Act, that I believe can pass muster with the parliamentarian.” “But we don’t know unless we TRY!” “Now, Senator Thune, to his credit, is going to bring that to a vote on the floor.” “We’re going to have a chance to do what we call ‘get on the bill.’ I’m obviously going to vote YES.” “I think all Democrats will vote NO. I don’t know how many Republicans will vote no, but probably some will.”

    John Thune: The Deep State Gatekeeper Who Spent Years Thwarting Trump Suddenly Discovers “Trying” Is an Option

    Senate Majority Leader John Thune has spent the better part of President Trump’s second term acting like the world’s most polite roadblock. Now, according to Sen. John Kennedy, the South Dakota Republican is finally willing to bring a vote on the SAVE America Act through reconciliation — the process that only needs 50 votes plus Vice President JD Vance.

    Kennedy, to his credit, put it plainly: if they craft the voter integrity bill carefully, it might clear the parliamentarian. “We don’t know unless we TRY!” he said. And Thune, “to his credit,” is going to put it on the floor.

    How generous.

    For those keeping score at home, this is the same John Thune who has repeatedly treated Trump’s constitutional authority like an optional suggestion. Recess appointments? The tool every modern president has used — Clinton, both Bushes, Obama — somehow became radioactive the moment Trump needed it. Thune kept the Senate in pro forma sessions, the classic Deep State parlor trick that keeps the chamber “technically” in session just enough to block the president from filling vacancies without the full Senate circus. Result: Trump got zero. Previous presidents got dozens or hundreds. Coincidence? Sure. And I’m the Queen of England.

    Thune has preferred “grinding it out the normal way,” which in practice has meant slow-walking nominees, protecting the filibuster like it’s the last remaining piece of the Berlin Wall, and lecturing everyone about Senate “traditions” while the country deals with open borders, election integrity black holes, and a bureaucracy that still thinks 2020 never ended. When Trump pushed for real action — cancel the recess, clear the backlog, let the president actually staff his own government — Thune’s response was variations of “it’s complicated,” “we don’t have the votes,” and “everything is on the table” while carefully keeping the most useful tools off the table.

    Now Kennedy says things might happen. A vote on the SAVE Act. Proof of citizenship. Photo ID. The bare minimum protections most Americans already support and the left screams are “racist.” Suddenly the man who has spent years managing Trump’s agenda down to the lowest common denominator of institutional self-preservation is going to let democracy have a little oxygen.

    Forgive the skepticism. Thune has a long track record of sounding cooperative while the actual results stay safely inside the Overton window of permanent Washington. He cares deeply about the process. He cares deeply about the parliamentarian. He cares deeply about not rocking the boat too hard for the RINOs and institutionalists who still think the real enemy is the base that put Republicans in power. America? Freedom? The president the voters actually elected? Those appear to rank somewhere below “protecting the dignity of the Senate” on the priority list.

    Kennedy is right about one thing: you don’t know unless you try. The problem is we’ve watched this movie before. Thune tries just hard enough to claim he tried, then shrugs when the swamp wins another round. If this vote actually happens and the SAVE Act actually advances, great. Credit where it’s due. If it becomes another exercise in managed disappointment with the usual excuses about the parliamentarian, the Byrd Rule, or “not having the votes,” then the pattern holds.

    John Thune is not a secret Democrat. He’s something more useful to the permanent class: a Republican who can be trusted to keep the radical parts of the Trump agenda safely bottled up behind procedure, precedent, and polite obstruction. The Deep State doesn’t always need enemies. Sometimes it just needs reliable traffic cops.

    America is watching, Senator. So is the base that delivered the majority you’re currently managing. “Trying” is a start. Delivering is the only thing that counts. If you betray America again, your career is over and you will be haunted the rest of your pitiful life by Patriots who understand what traitors are.
