Kathy Hochul and Bruce Blakeman met for their only debate of the New York governor’s race on October 13. Early voting starts October 24. Election Day is November 3. Hochul leads in most polls, but the margin has tightened in some surveys and the race is still live.
The hour-long face-off on Spectrum News opened with a long, uninterrupted exchange on immigration and stayed there on the issues that matter to working New Yorkers: public safety, energy bills, taxes, and who the state actually prioritizes.

Immigration and sanctuary status
Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive, said he will end New York’s sanctuary policies on day one. He defended local cooperation with ICE and said his county removed more than 2,000 illegal migrants with records for rape, attempted murder, robbery, drug dealing, carjacking, and gang activity without raiding schools, hospitals, daycares, or churches.
He pointed to a recent ICE shooting in Marble Hill involving a vehicle with a five-year-old in the back seat and put the blame on Hochul’s policies. “It never would have happened but for your sanctuary policy,” he said. He also asked what Hochul would tell the families of two 30-year-old women murdered by illegal migrants in Nassau County.
Hochul called ICE “out of control” and accused Blakeman of being fine with agents firing into vehicles. She insisted New York “is not a sanctuary for criminals.” Blakeman countered that she spent $8 billion of taxpayer money on illegal migrants for free food, free housing, free transportation, and free cell phones while spending $4 billion on law enforcement.

Utility bills, taxes, and energy
Blakeman’s cleanest line of the night landed on energy costs. “Kathy, Donald Trump didn’t raise utility rates 48 times. You did. Donald Trump didn’t increase our utility bills by 50% since you became governor,” he said. He noted that she is sending a roughly $150–$200 rebate in an election year after average bills have risen thousands of dollars.
He promised to cut utility bills in half, cut taxes, open the Marcellus Shale for natural gas extraction (banned since 2014), scrap the “green energy scam,” and let local communities decide on large data centers. He contrasted New York with Pennsylvania, where fracking is allowed and bills are lower.
Hochul blamed Trump, the Iran war, and stalled federal approvals for high prices. She highlighted middle-class tax cuts, more than $10 billion in energy and inflation rebates, and a moratorium on new data centers.
Crime and other clashes
Blakeman tied cashless bail and other reforms to locked shampoo behind glass and unsafe communities. He cited Nassau County’s safety ranking. Hochul said statewide crime is at modern lows and that she spent $4 billion supporting police. She credited a prior Nassau executive for the county’s ranking and suggested Blakeman’s ICE cooperation distracted local cops.
Other flashpoints included a 2024 Cornell gang-rape case and the state’s voluntary intoxication loophole (Hochul called blaming her for a fraternity incident “pretty pathetic”), prison staffing vacancies after a corrections officers strike that led to firings and National Guard deployment, and Blakeman labeling New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani an antisemite who lacks American values.
Hochul mentioned Trump repeatedly and tried to paint Blakeman as his puppet. Blakeman noted differences (he is pro-choice; he supports a guest-worker approach for long-settled illegal immigrants) and said Hochul talks about Trump because she does not want to defend her own record.
The choice on stage was clear. Blakeman wants local police cooperating with federal immigration authorities, criminal illegal aliens removed, energy production unlocked, and ratepayers and taxpayers put first. Hochul wants to keep the current sanctuary framework, continue green energy priorities that drive bills higher, and treat Trump as the central problem in a state she has governed for years.
New Yorkers who are tired of paying more for everything while watching migrant-related spending and crime headlines can vote for the alternative in three weeks. Unfortunately, New York is a no-voter ID voter fraud controlled state. The Republican needs to get at least 60% of the vote to win with 51% as he is up against massive numbers of fake ballots and Democrat scams designed to always make the Democrat win from now on. New York is truly a political dictatorship like California and Washington State. Only Federal action can stop them, or a real Civil War.
