On Wednesday, MS NOW — the network that used to be MSNBC — went on air with breaking news. Anchor Peter Alexander announced that FBI Director Kash Patel had just landed in Russia for a meeting. Reporter Ken Dilanian backed it up. He said two sources familiar with the matter confirmed it. Dilanian added that his own FBI sources did not even know why Patel was there, and that alone was concerning.
The claim fell apart in minutes. The scams of MS NOW will never end. They are masters of deceit and Leftist BS
🚨 JUST IN: MSNOW reports “KASH PATEL IS IN RUSSIA”
FBI Director Kash Patel is on camera, right now, going full tough on crime mode at Liberty University in Virginia, USA 🇺🇸
You literally can’t make this up 🤣🤡
Which “sources” fed MSNOW total BS? https://t.co/guCSjpevNb

Patel was in Lynchburg, Virginia, at Liberty University. He was taking part in a law enforcement appreciation event with local officers and law students. Rep. John McGuire hosted the roundtable. Video and photos from the event showed him right there. The FBI Rapid Response account on X posted a side-by-side: one side the MS NOW report claiming he had landed in Russia, the other side footage of him at Liberty U. The caption was blunt: “MS Now’s ‘sources’ are ‘familiar’ with NOTHING!”
Patel responded on X himself. He noted that the same outlet keeps lying about the FBI’s actual work — record arrests of violent criminals, a drop in the murder rate, more gang members taken off the street, Most Wanted captures, child victims located, and large fentanyl seizures. He closed with three words: “Facts over clickbait.” He also said the network owes an apology to the FBI, to law enforcement, and to the American people.
FAKE NEWS MSNBC JUST TOLD AMERICA KASH PATEL “LANDED IN RUSSIA” TO MEET THE FSB.
REALITY CHECK: He’s at Liberty University. Right now.
Of course Ken Dilanian went on air and claimed “two people familiar with the matter” told him the FBI Director touched down in Moscow for a two-day trip to Saint Petersburg, hosted by the FSB.
No FBI confirmation. No White House. Just “two people familiar.” And the second it aired, Russian state media and half the left ran with it, treason, collusion, Patel is Putin’s man.
The man is in Lynchburg, Virginia. MSNBC never checked where the FBI Director physically was before they told the world he was in Moscow.
That’s not journalism, it’s FAKE NEWS.

Hours later, Dilanian went back on air and corrected the record. He said Patel had not landed in Russia and was still in the United States. He said the FBI had not answered their questions. He added that they regret the error and are transparent when they make them. The planned trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg that had been reported earlier never happened that day.
This is not the first time.
MSNBC spent years pushing the Russia collusion story about President Trump. Host Rachel Maddow built many of her highest-rated nights around it. She treated the Steele dossier — opposition research paid for by the Clinton campaign and filled with unverified claims — as if pieces of it kept checking out. When Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report found no evidence of a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia, the narrative collapsed. Critics noted that Maddow had spent far more time on the theories than on the findings that undercut them. Years later she still frames the interference findings as proof the larger collusion case held, even though the core conspiracy claim did not.

In 2019, host Lawrence O’Donnell went further. He reported, based on a single unnamed source, that Russian oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin had co-signed loans Trump took from Deutsche Bank. He repeated the claim on air and on Twitter, adding “if true.” Trump’s lawyers demanded a retraction. The next night O’Donnell walked it back. He said the information had not gone through MSNBC’s verification process, that he should not have reported it, and that the network was retracting the story. He apologized.
Ken Dilanian, the same reporter who put Patel in Russia this week, has been involved in earlier Russia-related claims that did not hold. In 2018, NBC and MSNBC reported that Russia was the likely culprit behind mysterious health problems affecting U.S. diplomats in Cuba — the so-called Havana syndrome — and that a sophisticated microwave or sonic weapon the Americans barely understood was involved. Later assessments from the intelligence community found it very unlikely a foreign adversary was responsible. Other explanations, including crickets producing sounds that matched the reported noises, gained attention. The original dramatic framing did not survive scrutiny.
Ken Dilanian has admitted the “Patel in Russia” scoop isn’t real, but, of course, he had to pat himself on the back while doing so, “I want to correct reporting from earlier today. I reported that two sources had told us that FBI director Kash Patel had landed in Russia for a planned trip that had been reported about recently. We’ve since learned that Patel did not, in fact, land in Russia today and remains in the U.S. …The timing of any potential trip remains unclear. Again, we regret this error and we are transparent about when we make errors. Back to you.”

The pattern is consistent. A claim involving Russia appears. Anonymous sources are cited. The story runs. Evidence arrives that does not match. A correction or retraction follows, often quieter than the original report. The network has rebranded as MS NOW, but the approach to these stories has not changed.
Patel’s response on X listed concrete results under the current FBI: tens of thousands of violent crime arrests, a nearly 20 percent drop in the murder rate, more than 30,000 gang members and violent criminals taken into custody, ten Most Wanted captures, thousands of child victims located, and large fentanyl seizures. Those numbers came from the bureau itself. The Russia claim about the director’s location did not.
Viewers can watch the original MS NOW segment and the FBI’s side-by-side response on X. The difference is clear in the video. One report placed the FBI director in Russia. The other showed him in Virginia.
