In one of the largest single aerial attacks on Moscow in the past two years, Ukraine launched more than 600 drones at the Russian capital and surrounding region overnight into Tuesday, August 18. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that between Monday evening and early Tuesday morning, roughly 620 to 637 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles headed toward the Moscow area. Russian air defenses claimed to have destroyed about 180 of them over the capital region alone, with additional intercepts reported elsewhere.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces downed 791 Ukrainian drones overnight across multiple regions, including Moscow, Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas. State media labeled the Moscow-focused wave the biggest such assault on the capital in two years. All four major Moscow airports closed during the attack. Emergency crews responded to multiple crash sites from falling debris.

Damage reports remained limited but tangible. A warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, was struck east of Moscow, sparking a fire. The company described the damage as “insignificant,” consistent with its pattern of downplaying hits. Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov said three people were injured in the Moscow region, including a 10-year-old girl. Some homes and a guesthouse suffered damage, and the regional energy provider Mosoblenergo reported more than 5,000 customers without power after infrastructure strikes. Smoke was visible over construction sites and residential areas.
This was not an isolated strike. Ukraine has systematically targeted Wildberries logistics hubs since mid-July, claiming the company helps supply the Russian military with dual-use components, navigation equipment, and other gear—an allegation Moscow denies. Ukrainian officials and independent reporting indicate seven of the retailer’s ten largest warehouses have been hit and knocked offline in the campaign. The sustained pressure aims at Russia’s rear-area economy and logistics rather than purely military front-line targets.

While drones lit up the skies over Moscow, Russian forces struck back in Ukraine. A missile attack on the village of Pechenihy in the Kharkiv region killed at least 10 people and injured eight to 17 others early Tuesday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described it as a deliberate hit on a busy civilian intersection near a post office and shops surrounded by residential buildings. He vowed a response. Overnight Russian drone and missile activity also caused additional casualties and damage across other Ukrainian regions.
The broader picture of the war remains one of grinding attrition with expanding long-range reach. Ukrainian forces have demonstrated growing capacity to overwhelm Russian air defenses through sheer volume of relatively low-cost drones, many domestically produced. Moscow cannot protect every warehouse, power node, or industrial site across its vast territory. Analysts have noted the obvious: Russia lacks sufficient air-defense coverage to shield its entire rear, even high-value commercial infrastructure. These attacks impose steady economic costs and force the Kremlin to divert resources while failing to alter the fundamental ground dynamics along the front lines.
Putin has shown no public sign of changing course. The drone war continues to escalate on both sides, bringing the conflict deeper into Russian territory even as civilian areas in Ukraine absorb repeated punishment. For readers tracking the numbers, this latest Moscow swarm fits a clear pattern of Ukrainian adaptation: larger, more frequent barrages designed to stretch Russian defenses thin and hit where it hurts the logistical and economic base supporting the invasion.
The war grinds on. Drones keep flying. And the distance between the front and the Russian heartland keeps shrinking. Now it is a question as to what Putin will do. Will he use the troops massed in Belarus and Russia and move to take Ukraine, or will he allow these attacks to escalate, throwing doubt on his own leadership?
