Graduating from Kobe University with a business management degree, she dabbled in journalism as a TV host before entering politics in 1993 as an independent, securing a lower house seat and joining the LDP in 1996. Her youth was marked by rebellion: playing drums in a college heavy metal band called “Mystery” and riding motorcycles, earning her the moniker “biker chick.”

Her alliance with Abe, assassinated in 2022, runs deep. As his protege, Takaichi shared his vision of a “beautiful Japan,” emphasizing national pride and historical revisionism.

Abe, a close friend of former U.S. President Donald Trump, fostered a robust U.S.-Japan alliance, and Takaichi is poised to build on this legacy. Her nationalism aligns with Abe’s push to revise Japan’s pacifist constitution, recognizing the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) as a full military and allowing collective defense.

    This hawkish stance comes at a critical juncture, as Japan grapples with demographic decline, economic stagnation, and escalating regional threats. Central to Takaichi’s foreign policy is bolstering Japan’s defense posture against China’s rise. She has called for a stronger military, enhanced cybersecurity, and promotion of nuclear fusion for energy security. Beijing’s military modernization—expanding its navy to over 370 ships, developing hypersonic missiles, and conducting frequent incursions around Taiwan—poses an existential challenge.
    China claims Taiwan as its territory, vowing reunification by force if necessary, with President Xi Jinping ordering the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to be ready for invasion by 2027. Recent PLA exercises simulate blockades and amphibious assaults, heightening fears of conflict. Takaichi, a known China hawk, has expressed hopes for dialogue with Chinese leaders over Taiwan while suggesting a “quasi-security alliance” with the island—a bold step that could strain Sino-Japanese ties.
    Japan’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense has evolved significantly under conservative leaders like Abe and now Takaichi. While Japan maintains unofficial ties with Taiwan due to its “One China” policy, it has increasingly framed a Taiwan contingency as a direct threat to its security. In 2021, then-Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso declared that Japan would defend Taiwan alongside the U.S., echoing Abe’s view that “peace in the Taiwan Strait is a matter of national survival.”

    Japan’s southwestern islands, like Okinawa, lie just 100 kilometers from Taiwan, hosting U.S. bases that would be prime targets in any conflict. The 2022 National Security Strategy explicitly states Japan would support U.S. operations in a Taiwan scenario, including logistics and potential counterstrikes under revised laws allowing collective self-defense. Public opinion is mixed—over half oppose direct SDF involvement—but elites recognize the stakes: a Chinese takeover of Taiwan could dominate sea lanes vital to Japan’s trade-dependent economy.
    The U.S.-Japan alliance forms the bedrock of this strategy. Under the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, the U.S. commits to defend Japan, with 54,000 troops stationed there. Joint statements from Biden-Kishida summits in 2023 and 2024 underscored “unwavering commitment” to Taiwan’s stability, with integrated command structures and missile-sharing initiatives. Takaichi’s leadership could deepen this partnership, especially with Trump’s potential return, given Abe’s personal rapport with him. She has signaled willingness to host Trump early on, though frictions loom over trade deals like the U.S.-Japan pact reducing tariffs on Japanese goods, which she might seek to renegotiate.
    Analysts predict Takaichi will push for higher defense spending—Japan aims for 2% of GDP by 2027—and closer QUAD ties (with U.S., India, Australia) to counter China. Yet, challenges abound. Takaichi’s Yasukuni visits and historical views could exacerbate tensions with China, which has urged Japan to “pursue a positive policy” post-election. South Korea, another key ally, eyes her warily for similar reasons. Domestically, she must navigate a fractured parliament, where the LDP-Komeito coalition lost its majority, potentially forcing compromises on her aggressive agenda.
    Economic pressures—rising prices, yen weakness—demand focus, but her expansionary fiscal plans risk investor jitters. As Takaichi assumes office, her tenure could redefine Japan’s role in Asia. By fortifying the U.S. alliance and standing firm on Taiwan, she honors Abe’s legacy while confronting China’s ambitions head-on. Whether this deters Beijing or escalates risks remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Japan’s first female PM is no mere symbol—she’s a force ready to drum up a new era of resilience.
