Eight months after U.S. and Israeli strikes opened the fighting on February 28, 2026, ship-tracking data shows regional oil exports topping pre-war levels. Kpler figures put Middle East flows above 24 million barrels a day in the week through October 18, versus a 23.3 million barrel daily average before the war.
A barrel holds about 42 gallons. That daily total is the fuel that moves cars, planes, ships, and factories around the world. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow bottleneck most of that oil used to squeeze through. Iran has hit tankers with drones, missiles, and small boats trying to slow the traffic. Attacks continue—dozens reported this month alone, many undercounted because ships do not always report them. The International Maritime Organization has verified 119 incidents in the region and 24 seafarer deaths since the fighting started. About 6,000 sailors remain stuck from earlier disruptions.

Yet the oil keeps moving. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have shifted more crude onto pipelines that skip Hormuz entirely. In September, roughly 40 percent of non-Iranian Gulf crude bypassed the strait that way, up from 17 percent before the war. Older tankers make short shuttle runs through the strait under American air cover off Oman, transfer cargoes to bigger ships waiting outside the danger zone, then turn around for another load. Traders can clear an extra $20 a barrel on some Iraqi crude, or about $40 million on a full supertanker. The money keeps crews and owners willing to take the risk. One Chinese staffing firm has offered bonuses up to $25,000 for a round trip.
BREAKING: Oil is down 2.30% in the last 2 hours as the FT reports Middle East oil exports have climbed back to prewar levels.
Gulf shipments averaged 24.6 million barrels a day last week, above the 23.3 million before the war.
But WTI crude is still up 46% from its pre war level of $67.

Flows through Hormuz itself, including the offshore transfers, sit around 14 million barrels a day—about 82 percent of pre-war levels. The overall regional number is higher because the bypass routes and the shuttle system have filled the gap. Iran’s own exports remain bottled up by a U.S. naval blockade on its ports.
The volume recovery has not made the oil cheap. Shipping a supertanker load of Gulf crude to China now runs nearly $37 a barrel. War-risk insurance has climbed as high as 10 percent of a ship’s value, up from under 3 percent. Brent crude, the international benchmark, has traded near $110. Markets are paying more to move the oil, but the barrels are still arriving.
HSBC’s chief executive has said Hormuz itself could become less critical within about five years as alternative routes expand. For now the war grinds on, attacks continue, and the improvised system of U.S. protection, pipelines, and offshore transfers is what keeps the oil flowing past pre-war levels. The numbers come from Kpler tracking cited by the Wall Street Journal and others. They are preliminary and can shift with the next convoy or the next strike. The core picture has held through the months: Iran has not shut the taps on its neighbors, and the oil is moving.
