According to Iranian officials and multiple reports, Tehran and Oman have agreed on the geographic coordinates for a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz that would put inbound traffic under Iranian coordination and control. Outbound vessels would use the Omani side, with Muscat managing that lane in coordination with Tehran. A joint statement is reportedly in the final drafting stage—unless “third parties” (read: the United States) interfere.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed the coordinates have been agreed and the understanding is advancing. Iranian sources describe the arrangement as stabilizing Tehran’s wartime gains over the waterway that carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil. One Tehran researcher put it bluntly: negotiations are about locking in achievements, not giving them away. Iran wants “innocent passage” but not “hazardous passage”—code for blocking U.S. or allied military equipment while asserting the right to police commercial traffic.
This is no minor technical fix. Before the war that erupted in late February 2026 with U.S. and Israeli strikes, the Strait of Hormuz functioned as an open international waterway. Iran closed it through force, mines, and attacks, then spent months insisting it would never return to the pre-war status quo. The regime established its own “Persian Gulf Strait Authority,” demanded notifications and potential “service fees,” and repeatedly asserted that parts of the strait fall under its sovereign control. Inbound ships would transit the northern channel closer to Iran; outbound traffic the southern Omani side. The United States is aiming for an announcement as early as this week.
Iran, however, insists the talks are strictly with Oman and have “nothing to do with the United States.” Tehran continues to demand an end to the U.S. naval blockade of its ports as a precondition for any lasting reopening and frames the route agreement as ratification of its control. Iranian officials have floated “service fees” to cover security, environmental impact, and staffing, with revenue split with Oman—language Washington has rejected as a de facto toll on an international waterway.
This is the core problem for America and free nations. Iran did not “win” conventional military dominance. Its forces took heavy losses. What it retained—and is now institutionalizing—is the ability to hold global energy markets hostage. Control of Hormuz gives the regime a permanent economic weapon that rivals or exceeds its oil export revenues. Once the inbound lane is formally under Iranian coordination, every tanker entering the Gulf becomes subject to Tehran’s approval, timing, and eventual fee structure. That is leverage no previous Iranian government possessed.
The June 2026 memorandum of understanding already contained the seeds of this outcome. It required Iran to facilitate safe, toll-free passage for 60 days and then “conduct dialogue with the Sultanate of Oman to define the future administration and maritime services” in the strait. Iran read that language as recognition of its role. The United States and Gulf states insisted on free navigation without Iranian permissions or charges. The gap never closed. Subsequent flare-ups, Iranian attacks on shipping that refused its routes, and U.S. retaliatory strikes showed how quickly the arrangement frayed.
Gulf partners have long warned against any deal that grants Iran administrative power over the waterway. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously told regional allies that no country has the right to charge for international waterways and that fees or tolls would never be acceptable. Yet the emerging Iran-Oman route structure moves precisely in that direction under the cover of a “temporary” technical fix.

MAGA America did not fight a war, endure energy shocks, and watch the regime’s proxies escalate so that the mullahs could emerge with a permanent chokehold on the world’s most critical oil artery. Reopening the strait is necessary. Formalizing Iranian control over inbound traffic is a strategic defeat. Trump has correctly kept military pressure on the table. Any final arrangement must restore genuine freedom of navigation—not ratify Iran’s wartime seizure of the strait.
The regime is negotiating from a position of opportunistic strength after months of disruption. Washington should respond from a position of American strength. Anything less hands the Islamic Republic a victory it did not earn on the battlefield and cannot be allowed to cash at the negotiating table. President Trump has them defeated militarily, to lose in the peace would be an absolute tragedy.
