Ilhan Omar has absolutely erupted at Donald Trump after he demanded that she immediately resign from Congress. A Justice Department filing connected to the search of Omar’s home identified her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Trump seized on that wording, accused her of using a fake name and revived the longstanding allegations surrounding her former marriage. Omar fired back by calling Trump a “creep,” accusing him of laundering conspiracy theories through a corrupt DOJ and insisting that her name has always been Ilhan Omar. She even dragged JD Vance into it by telling Trump to focus on his vice president’s real name.
The rhetoric is nuclear, but the facts still matter. The DOJ filing uses the alternate name without explaining why, and it is not itself proof that Omar committed fraud. Federal investigators are examining possible false statements in immigration and citizenship paperwork, but Omar has not been charged and continues to deny wrongdoing. Public records cited by the Associated Press show her using Ilhan Omar on marriage, divorce and voter records for nearly two decades. Trump also cannot simply declare her seat vacant: expulsion requires action by the House and a two-thirds vote. - On Oct. 12, Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington, D.C. home for four to five hours. They took phones (including hers), a passport, notebooks, a camera, and other items. Omar said she sat on the couch and watched. She called it political intimidation and later said she will move out because the address is public and threats have increased. Relatives, including her sister Sahra Noor, received grand jury subpoenas. Sources said agents had already seized a sister’s phone earlier and sought DNA evidence, including by checking trash.
- A court filing from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office listed her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” That name matches her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. People have claimed for years that he is her brother and the 2009 marriage helped with immigration status. Omar has said “not to my knowledge” when asked if she married her brother. Her office calls it a baseless smear.
- Fox News sources, including a law enforcement source, said her real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. Omar insists it has always been Ilhan Abdullahi Omar or Ilhan Omar. She told Fox and FOX 9: “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar, you know it. It’s Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Her junior-year Edison High School yearbook listed her as Ilhan Omar. Public records show her using Ilhan Omar on marriage, divorce, and voter documents for nearly two decades.
- Trump posted on Truth Social and spoke at an Iowa rally. He said she used a fake name to get elected and sworn in. He demanded she resign immediately and said Republicans just picked up a House seat. He also revived the brother-marriage claims.
- Omar posted on X in response: “The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history. Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine. So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar. Maybe you should focus on what your VP’s real name is.”
- An old deleted tweet is back in the mix. In June 2013 she wrote: “Happy Father’s Day to my aabo Nur Said, I am forever grateful to Allah for giving me the best father ….” She deleted it on Sept. 19, 2019. Other records, including a Congressional Black Caucus memorial after his 2020 death, refer to her father as Nur Omar Mohamed. The “Nur Said” wording lines up with the Elmi name. Her office said it was a childhood nickname and she deleted the post because of threats.
- She is raising money for legal fees and told MS NOW she will not “tap out.” Midterms are Nov. 3. She is expected to keep her safe blue Minnesota seat, but the probe is national news.
