We’ve been here before. The same rumor. The same marriage. The same “this time it’s different” energy. The same clip of a conservative legal warrior promising the congresswoman a one-way ticket to Mogadishu. And then… nothing happens that the public can actually see.
Benny Johnson dropped the latest sequel Tuesday: Mike Davis, founder of the Article III Project, taking a flamethrower to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.). If the fraud allegations are true, Davis said, she needs to be charged, denaturalized, and “sent the hell out of America.”
“She can be Queen of Somalia,” Davis added, before the clip went for the jugular about IQs and “fitting right in.”
Savage? Sure. New? Not even close.
Americans have been told for years that Omar’s citizenship is hanging by a thread. Donald Trump said it on the campaign trail. Commentators said it in 2019. Vice President JD Vance said in March that she “definitely committed immigration fraud.” Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Benny last week that “we know that she married her brother” and “something’s going to happen.” Border Czar Tom Homan then confirmed on Fox that ICE is looking at it. “No one’s above the law.”
If this were a movie, it would be Groundhog Day with worse weather and a worse ending. Bill Murray at least got a character arc. This story just keeps resetting to “investigation ongoing.”
The marriage that never dies
The core allegation is old enough to vote. In 2009 Omar legally married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, a British citizen. Critics have long claimed Elmi is actually her brother and that the union was a paper marriage to help him with immigration status. Omar has denied it for a decade. Fact-checkers have called the sibling claim unfounded. Conservative outlets have kept digging anyway. Elmi later left the country; Mullin now says he lives in London.
Here’s the part the highlight reels usually skip: Omar was naturalized in 2000, at age 17, after arriving as a Somali refugee in 1995. The disputed marriage was nine years later. A 2009 wedding cannot, by itself, prove she lied on a citizenship application she signed when she was a teenager. That’s why Mullin and Homan keep talking about “the whole family migration” and “possible illegal activity for them to come to the United States to begin with.” The theory, if there is one that could actually stick, has to reach back to the refugee paperwork — not just the later marriage.
Civil revocation under 8 U.S.C. § 1451 has no statute of limitations, which is why officials can still talk about a 2000 oath in 2026. The government must still prove, with clear, convincing, and unequivocal evidence, that citizenship was illegally procured or obtained by concealment of a material fact. Courts do not revoke a seat in Congress because a podcast guest is having a good afternoon.
So far: no public complaint. No indictment. No denaturalization filing. House Oversight Chairman James Comer is already asking the administration to show its work so Congress can even talk about expulsion. That is the tell. If the file were a slam dunk, it would be in a courtroom, not on a convention-hall couch.
The rest of the cloud
Omar’s problems are not limited to one marriage certificate. Minnesota’s Feeding Our Future scandal — hundreds of millions in pandemic meal-program theft, dozens of convictions, a ringleader talking from jail — keeps circling her district, her waivers, her office, and people who once worked around her campaigns. A judge found that relaxed pandemic rules she championed left the program “vulnerable to fraud.” She has not been charged in that case either. A congressional watchdog recently recommended dismissing a separate fight over a financial disclosure that briefly made her look like a multimillionaire. The pattern is familiar: smoke, heat, no conviction with her name on the caption.
None of that makes the citizenship file go away. It also doesn’t make a press conference a verdict.
Davis is doing what Davis does: saying the quiet part at full volume. If investigators can prove willful fraud in the naturalization process, the law already has a path. Charge. Denaturalize. Remove. That is not “Queen of Somalia” fan fiction. That is the statute. The sarcasm writes itself only because we have watched this exact trailer since the first Trump term and the credits never roll.
Homan is right about one sentence: no one is above the law. That cuts both ways. It means a member of Congress does not get a special exemption if the paperwork was a lie. It also means the government does not get to substitute a viral clip for a complaint filed in federal court.
Until that complaint exists, this is still the same Tuesday. Same rumor. Same promises. Same Somalia punchline. Same missing filing.
