General Motors is at it again—ditching American workers for robots while preaching about the future of electric vehicles. Not long after axing over 1,000 jobs at its Detroit Factory Zero plant, the company rolled out around 50 shiny new collaborative robots. According to Yahoo Finance, these “cobots” are now helping slap body panels onto trucks like the GMC Hummer EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV.
Factory Zero was supposed to be the crown jewel of GM’s big EV push. Instead, weak demand for those pricey electric rides has led to production slowdowns, temporary shutdowns, and plenty of pink slips. But hey, no worries—GM is still dumping cash into fancy automation tech. The new Fanuc robots are there to handle the boring, back-breaking tasks and supposedly make the workplace safer. GM swears they’re not replacing people, just “complementing” them so workers can do more skilled jobs.
Tell that to the folks on the factory floor. The United Auto Workers Local 22 isn’t buying it. They’ve already filed grievances, pointing out the obvious: how can you trust a company that cuts a thousand jobs and then brings in robots right after? It sure looks like the machines are winning.
This isn’t just a GM problem. The whole auto industry is racing toward more robots and AI to cut costs and boost efficiency. Toyota and BMW are doing the same thing. After the UAW’s big 2023 contract, GM figured it added about $500 to the price of every vehicle they build. Rising labor costs and global competition are pushing everyone harder into automation. CEO Mary Barra and her team love talking up partnerships with NVIDIA for AI-powered factories. They say it’s all about staying competitive.
But let’s be real with some straight talk: while executives pat themselves on the back, American workers are left wondering what’s next. Blue-collar jobs on the assembly line are getting squeezed, and it’s not stopping there.
Senator Marco Rubio is sounding the alarm loud and clear. He warns that the AI revolution is coming fast and will wipe out millions of jobs—not just factory work, but white-collar professionals too. “There will be white-collar jobs that will be impacted,” Rubio said. “That over time could destabilize societies all over the world.” He’s urging Americans to get ready now: learn new skills, adapt, or get left behind in the dust.
The debate is heating up, especially with the next UAW contract talks in 2028. Where do robots stop and human workers begin? For too many companies, the answer seems to be “who cares, as long as the bottom line looks good?” In the meantime, hardworking Americans deserve straight answers—not more corporate spin about how robots are their new best friends. Let’s be perfectly clear. As of the end of June 2026, the so-called AI apocalypse has not happened—and it’s looking more unlikely every day. Most companies are pivoting to new ways to make money and many are actually hiring more workers. That’s the exact opposite of what the doomsday pundits keep screaming.
The AI revolution is here, but it’s following the same pattern as every other big technological shift. Remember the car revolution? The guys who worked with horses lost their jobs, but mechanics rose up to take their place. See how that works? Creative destruction creates new opportunities.
We Americans are the fastest in the world at adjusting, which is exactly why we beat out every other economy. The only real competitor is China, and even then, they only keep up because they’re stealing about $500 billion worth of our intellectual property every year—just like President Trump has pointed out for years. They rob us blind, copy everything we create, and still can’t fully catch up.
Bottom line: America still leads. We always have, and we always will. This assuming Trump can pass the Save America Act before the November elections. Only then will a new American golden age be solid and ready to lead the world. If Trump fails, then all bets are off.
