Katie Zacharia lasted about five days as White House press secretary. President Trump named her on October 9. She held one briefing on October 13. By October 16 she was transitioning out of the job. What the hell?
The short run started rough and got worse. Her only briefing ran roughly 14 minutes. She read from notes for most of it, then took three questions from Breitbart, Fox News, and the Daily Mail. One question on Ukraine intelligence sharing got the answer “I’ll have to get back to you.” She also announced that the administration had asked Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign from Greece. At one point she called her husband “my president” before correcting herself. The session ended early so reporters could catch Trump on his way to Marine One.

Per Fox’s Peter Doocy, a senior White House official says she’s “transitioning out of the press secretary job.”
Before that, Trump said he told her minutes before facing reporters: “You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.” Asked if he was firing her, he said, “No, no. I want her to have a good life,” and added, “She’s been brutalized by the media.”
She has four young kids and a family in California. The press corps went after her like sharks from day one. Trump showed her real class here. I wish her and her family the best.

The bigger problem was her credentials. Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine Law in 2011. She took the California bar that year and did not pass. She never retook it. She is not licensed to practice law in any state. Trump’s announcement called her an attorney. She has described herself as a lawyer in media appearances. When asked where she passed the bar, she said it was when she moved to China. That answer drew immediate attention. Later she told reporters the results were “inconsequential” because she and her husband planned to leave for China soon after the wedding. She said she worked in the international practice of a Chinese firm and that Pepperdine’s president once told her she could say “lawyer” but not “attorney” or “esquire.” A watchdog group filed a complaint with the California State Bar asking for an investigation into how she presented herself.
Trump spoke publicly about it on Friday. Standing outside the White House, he said he had just talked to her. “Katie, is this for you? Cause she’s been treated very rough.” He added that if he were her he would reconsider, and that he wants her to be happy. Officials later confirmed she is leaving the press secretary role. Some described it as being let go. Trump said she might stay on in a different job that is easier. He also said the White House had managed without a press secretary for a couple of weeks after Karoline Leavitt left and that things were going okay. He is in no rush to name a replacement.

Right now, Zacharia is transitioning out of the WH role, possibly to another admin spot

Leavitt stepped down at the end of August to spend more time with her young children. She is moving to Fox News. The job sat open for weeks. Zacharia had been a frequent conservative commentator on Fox and Newsmax, a senior communications adviser at Trump Media and Truth Social, and had done a short stint as a spokeswoman at the Department of Homeland Security under Kristi Noem. She also served as general counsel for Fix California, the group founded by Ric Grenell. Trump praised her loyalty and called her a devoted MAGA supporter when he picked her.
I really don’t think there’s much wrong with calling yourself a “lawyer” if, as is true of Katie Zacharia, she graduated law school and then worked in a law firm (even if she failed the Bar).
I always thought the same of the attacks on El-Sayed for calling himself a “physician” when he has an MD (and a PhD in Public Health). Neither are technically perfect but they’re not materially misleading.

On X the reaction was fast. People noted she undercut Anthony Scaramucci’s old short-tenure mark. Scaramucci posted that records are made to be broken but he takes no pleasure in other people’s pain. Others pointed to the stiff briefing and the bar exam questions as the reasons the role collapsed so quickly. White House officials told reporters the week had become a distraction.
Zacharia and her family were still expected to have dinner Friday night at the vice president’s residence with JD Vance and Usha Vance. The press secretary job, meanwhile, is open again heading into the midterms. Trump has said many people have called about it because the role turns people into stars. For now he appears content to let the vacancy sit. I don’t know about you, but Maria Bartiromo would be perfect for the position.
