Independent journalist Nick Sortor has seen plenty of blue-city chaos. Saturday night in Madison, Wisconsin, he got a dose that left him genuinely fearing for his life.
Sortor and fellow independent reporter Karlyn Borysenko were driving near the self-declared “Corey Ruiz Autonomous Zone” — or CRAZ — when Sortor stepped out of the car to try talking to the activists. He cracked a few jokes, the kind of light-touch approach that sometimes de-escalates these situations. It did the opposite.
The crowd closed in. They blocked him from getting back into his vehicle. Someone swung a pole. Then they sprayed him and his car with vomit. They damaged the left front quarter panel. And they made the threat crystal clear: “Hurry up and leave before your life ends out here. There’s a whole team of us.”
Sortor later posted the video and wrote: “I have genuinely never been more scared for my life than I was tonight. I didn’t even ENTER the ‘Autonomous Zone,’ but I was attacked regardless… Total third world shit.” He called 911 immediately after escaping. Rank-and-file Madison police officers responded professionally, helped clean the vomit off him, and earned praise from both journalists. The problem wasn’t the cops on the street. It was the political handcuffs higher up.

Borysenko, filming from the passenger seat with a hood over her head, captured the escalating confrontation. She had already dealt with hostility from some of the same people earlier that day inside the zone. “It was absolutely terrifying,” she told The Gateway Pundit. “One of the same people had been aggressive towards me in the autonomous zone earlier in the day. Hopefully the city will allow the cops to go and arrest the people who did this.”
She also noted what many on the ground already suspect: the zone appears to double as a drug operation. “BTW all of those people are likely drug dealers who are selling drugs out of that car, or the people they are selling the drugs too,” Borysenko wrote. “The leftists are giving the homeless people in that encampment drugs to use them as their security attack dogs.”
This is the same playbook Seattle’s CHOP/CHAZ used in 2020 — barricades made of pallets, furniture, and spike strips; tents; blocked streets; and a declaration that normal law no longer applies. The Madison version sprang up after the July 22 police shooting of Corey Ruiz, a 38-year-old armed serial felon who allegedly attacked an officer with a knife during an arrest. Protesters seized several blocks around Williamson and Baldwin streets. Businesses are disrupted. Emergency access is restricted. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway has urged the activists to voluntarily dismantle the barricades while reportedly limiting police from simply clearing the illegal occupation. As of Sunday, no arrests had been publicly announced for the attack on the journalists.

Sortor put it bluntly: “ALLOWING VIOLENT ANARCHISTS TO TAKE OVER SEVERAL CITY BLOCKS SHOULD NEVER BE TOLERATED ANYWHERE IN AMERICA.” He is calling for federal involvement. He is right.
This is not “mostly peaceful protest.” This is not “community healing.” This is a Democrat-run city allowing a lawless enclave where journalists who show up to document reality are threatened with death, doused in vomit, and told a “whole team” is ready to end them. The same political class that spent years lecturing Americans about “threats to democracy” is silent when the threat comes from their preferred radicals.
Independent journalists like Nick Sortor and Karlyn Borysenko keep showing up where the cameras of the corporate press do not. They get the death threats and the bodily fluids for their trouble. The rank-and-file cops want to do their jobs. The mayor and the activist class prefer the anarchy.
Madison’s CRAZ is another data point in a long, ugly pattern. Blue cities tolerate the barricades, the drug dealing, the intimidation, and the violence until the political cost becomes too high. Journalists who refuse to look away become the targets. Ordinary residents lose their streets and their safety.
This is not America. And it will not stop until leaders with actual authority decide that lawless autonomous zones are finished.
