Gold and Silver Add $1 Trillion as Investors Rotate to Metals After Democratic Sweep Targets the AI Buildout
Gold and silver jumped hard Wednesday after Democrats locked in control of the House and Senate. The metals added a combined $1 trillion in market cap in a single session, according to The Kobeissi Letter.
Spot gold climbed back above $4,000 an ounce, trading near $4,040–$4,050 with gains around 2.8–3%. Silver rose roughly 4.4% and pushed toward $52. The dollar softened to a one-month low and Treasury yields fell as markets priced political gridlock. That combination supported bullion immediately.
The bigger signal sits in the tech trade. Overnight, U.S. stock futures sold off hard, with the Nasdaq 100 dropping as much as 2.4% on the results. AI and data-center names led the decline. Equities later pared losses and turned higher after President Trump accepted the outcome and traders settled on gridlock as the baseline. Metals held the gains.

Analysts flagged the risk of slower data-center construction and tighter AI rules under Democratic majorities. Tech analyst Dan Ives called the blue wave a “seismic shift” that will have a “negative impact on the pace of the AI Revolution buildout in the US over the next few years.” He estimated that 10% of the planned 800 to 1,000 U.S. data centers “will not happen now.” Some investors may prefer the slower pace; others see added risk.
Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez already introduced the AI Data Center Moratorium Act earlier this year. The bill would freeze new AI data-center builds and expansions until federal safeguards are in place on safety, electricity prices, the environment, and worker protections. Sanders has said the country needs a federal moratorium so “a handful of billionaire Big Tech oligarchs” do not decide the future of the economy.

Voters delivered related results on the ground. More than 20 local ballot measures restricting or banning data centers passed. Democratic candidates won in data-center hot spots such as Ohio and Georgia after campaigning on accountability, moratoriums, or tougher regulation. The industry also lost Senate allies in states that had been friendly to the buildout.
Investors who spent the last two years riding the AI infrastructure boom are now watching those pledges and shifting into hard assets. Gold and silver had already given back ground in 2026 after record runs in 2025; the midterm outcome restored safe-haven demand the same day the tech narrative took a political hit. Gridlock limits further deficit-expanding legislation under Trump, but progressive priorities on data centers and AI oversight are now live in both chambers.

Gold has surged back above $4,000 as the US dollar and Treasury yields retreat:
Gold jumped as much as +2.6% to $4,040 per ounce, marking its largest intraday gain since August.
Silver also surged +4.3% to nearly $52 per ounce, while platinum and palladium posted strong gains.
The rally followed Democrats’ sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, as markets bet that greater political gridlock could limit Trump’s ability to push through further deficit-expanding spending plans.
As a result, US Treasury yields declined across the curve, while the US Dollar Index fell as much as -0.4%, its largest decline in 2 months, supporting demand for non-yielding gold and making it cheaper for international buyers.
