James Baker (Former U.S. Secretary of State): “Military force is not the answer to the problem of terrorism. We must fight terrorism with every tool at our disposal.”
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered a guided missile submarine and accelerated the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East in response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. This decision comes as fears grow over potential regional conflicts following recent high-profile assassinations linked to the ongoing hostilities.

The move to bolster U.S. military presence is in reaction to the recent killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and a senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut. These assassinations have heightened the risk of retaliatory strikes from Iran, which has vowed to punish Israel for Haniyeh’s deathâa responsibility Israel has yet to acknowledge. This latest escalation follows an unprecedented attack from Iran on Israel with missiles and drones earlier this year, which was itself a response to an Israeli strike on an Iranian compound in Syria.
In a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Austin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to defend Israel and discussed efforts to deter aggression from Iran, Hezbollah, and other Iranian proxies. The USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been operating in the Asia Pacific, is en route to the Middle East to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group. The Lincoln, equipped with F-35s and F/A-18s, is expected to arrive by the end of the month.
Additionally, the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine, has been ordered to the region, although its arrival time is yet to be confirmed. Austin and Gallant also addressed Israelâs operations in Gaza, emphasizing the need to minimize civilian casualties and progress toward a cease-fire and hostage release deal.
President Biden has indicated that a cease-fire agreement is still achievable, despite Hamas’s refusal to participate in negotiations this week following recent air strikes that have resulted in civilian casualties. Last week, Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Qatari leader Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani urged both Israel and Hamas to agree to a cease-fire and hostage release, with talks set to resume in Doha or Cairo on August 15.
The proposed deal, which builds on a May proposal by Biden, involves exchanging vulnerable hostages for Palestinian prisoners, a temporary cease-fire, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from densely populated areas in Gaza. Despite progress, key implementation details remain unresolved.

Hamas is still holding approximately 115 hostages in Gaza, following an attack on southern Israel that resulted in over 1,100 deaths and about 250 hostages taken. A brief November truce saw the release of around 105 hostages. The ongoing conflict has led to nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and severe shortages of essentials for civilians in Gaza.
