So far, the worst day ALL YEAR if this continues for NASDAQ and S&P 500 The post-Democrat win bump in the markets no longer exists.
BREAKING: The US stock market is TANKING well over $2 TRILLION just this morning, one of the worst days in RECENT MEMORY
Wall Street’s post-election bounce lasted about one session. On Thursday the S&P 500 erased more than $2 trillion in value by mid-morning, with the Nasdaq on track for its worst day in 18 months and sliding into correction territory.
Eric Daugherty flagged it early: “The US stock market is TANKING well over $2 TRILLION just this morning, one of the worst days in RECENT MEMORY. So far, the worst day ALL YEAR if this continues for NASDAQ and S&P 500. The post-Democrat win bump in the markets no longer exists.”
That bump came Wednesday after Democrats took the House and Senate. Indexes jumped on the idea that divided government or slower Republican priorities would ease some pressure. By Thursday the trade flipped. Traders started pricing in tighter rules on AI data centers, slower permits, and pushback in states where the buildout is heaviest. Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa has already called for a moratorium on new data centers. Other Democratic governors-elect in key states made similar noises.

The numbers moved fast. Nasdaq dropped around 5 percent. S&P 500 fell roughly 3.3 percent. Dow shed more than 1,200 points. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) plunged about 11 percent. Reports put the S&P Information Technology sector down 6 percent or more. Consumer Discretionary got hit next, largely on Tesla and related names. Energy and consumer staples held up better, finishing near flat or with the smallest losses. All 11 S&P sectors spent time in the red as the selling broadened.
@EricLDaugh Three main reasons why the markets are crashing:
1. Democrats
2. Democrats
3. DemocratsAnd the fourth reason is: Democrats. https://t.co/g73bYXLTRD

Chip and AI infrastructure names took the worst of it. Nvidia dropped 6–8 percent. AMD fell 13–16 percent. Micron, SanDisk, Western Digital, and Seagate posted double-digit losses. Qualcomm slid more than 11 percent after a softer smartphone outlook. Neoclouds CoreWeave and Nebius each dropped double digits. SpaceX and Tesla both lost ground. The group that carried the market for years suddenly looked expensive if data-center capex slows.
Wednesday’s rally had been the biggest in months for some indexes. It vanished in minutes on Thursday. One trader noted the Nasdaq erased its entire post-election gain in six minutes before the selling accelerated. The move echoed the April 2025 tariff selloff in speed, though the trigger this time is political and regulatory rather than a sudden tariff announcement.

Markets are treating the midterm outcome as a real constraint on the AI buildout that has driven a large share of recent equity gains. Permits, power contracts, water use, and local opposition now sit with more Democratic governors and a Democratic Congress. That does not kill the technology. It does raise the cost and timeline for the infrastructure that chipmakers and cloud landlords need. Investors are marking that down immediately.
