Another Teacher of the Year just quit rather than play the game. In Nashville, Samira Hardcastle—named 2025-2026 Teacher of the Year at John F. Kennedy Middle School—resigned after administrators ordered her to fabricate a passing grade for a student who never finished the work. They changed it themselves when she refused. “It creates false entitlement,” she told the Metro Nashville school board. “What happens when students lie, cry and cheat their way through schools and end up as future teachers, police or politicians?” Her colleague Diana Wills, a math teacher, called the same pressure “unethical and could very well be interpreted as illegal.”

Across the country, the pattern is clear: standards are lowered, grades are inflated to protect “equity” metrics and graduation rates, and the real curriculum has shifted from reading, writing, and arithmetic to Leftist and Marxist nonsense—systemic racism lectures, gender-as-social-construct dogma, and anti-American Critical Social Justice ideology.

Meanwhile, a Houston teacher named Darius Williams broke down in tears on day two of the school year. His seniors—17- and 18-year-olds—could not complete a basic sentence after he basically filled it in for them. “These are 17- and 18-year-old kids, and they couldn’t fill in four words. Four words!” he sobbed. “I have seniors who simply cannot read and seniors who cannot write.” The school still got an “A” rating from the state.
The Nation’s Report Card confirms the collapse. In 2024, 32% of 12th graders scored below basic in reading—the highest share in the assessment’s history. Forty-five percent scored below basic in math. Only 35% reached proficient in reading and a pathetic 22% in math. These are not pandemic blips; the long decline pre-dated COVID and accelerated under years of progressive “equity” policies that treat rigorous standards as oppressive.
What are the kids learning instead? A Manhattan Institute survey of 18- to 20-year-olds found 93% reported being taught or hearing from a school adult at least one Critical Social Justice concept—“white privilege,” “systemic racism,” “America is built on stolen land,” or the idea that gender is a choice divorced from biological sex. Exposure correlates with a sharp leftward political shift. Schools that once taught American history and basic competence now push the soft Marxism of identity politics and grievance. The Democrat plan to destroy America is in full gear all over America in almost all government schools.
Grade fabrication is the natural result. When actual learning collapses under the weight of DEI mandates, restorative “justice” that gut discipline, and identity-obsessed curricula, administrators need the numbers to look good. So teachers are ordered to pass the failing. Parents are told their child is “on track.” Diplomas become participation trophies. The students who can barely read a sentence walk across the stage—while honest teachers who refuse to lie are disciplined, sued, or driven out.
This is not education. It is managed decline dressed up as compassion. The same progressive apparatus that spent years injecting Critical Race Theory derivatives and gender ideology into classrooms now covers its failure with fake grades and inflated ratings. Hardcastle nailed it: children who cannot read or do basic math are being pushed forward while the system protects its own statistics and ideology.
America cannot compete, defend itself, or remain free if the next generation leaves school functionally illiterate yet fluent in the language of oppression studies. Parents, governors, and school boards who still believe in truth, standards, and actual knowledge must take the system back—before another Teacher of the Year walks away in disgust and another classroom full of seniors cannot fill in four words. If we let the Democrats win in dumbing down the nation, we lose everything.
