A father takes his 6-year-old to the beach. His phone starts pinging from a detection app. Four pairs of Meta smart glasses are within 30 feet. He confronts the men wearing them: “Why are you bringing them to the beach? What are you using them for?” The video, shared by Wall Street Apes, captures the exact moment ordinary American parents realize the technology in plain sight can quietly record their children.
These are the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses—marketed as convenient sunglasses with cameras. Online they are widely called “perv glasses” or “pervert glasses” because the recording light is easy to miss or defeat, and the devices have already been used to film people without consent. The concern is not abstract. When the subjects include young children at the beach, the pool, the park, or any family space, the risk is obvious: discreet, always-on recording capability in the hands of anyone who wants to capture kids.
This is not anti-technology. It is pro-parent and pro-common sense. Big Tech, led by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, released a product that turns every pair of sunglasses into a potential surveillance device while doing the bare minimum on safeguards. An LED light that can be covered or defeated is not a serious protection. Facial-recognition features that have been discussed or tested only raise the stakes further for identifying and tracking minors in public. Parents should not have to scan the beach for glowing LEDs or rely on third-party detection apps just to let their kids play.
From a MAGA perspective the pattern is familiar. The same companies that lecture Americans about “safety” and “community standards” release tools that erode the safety of actual American children, then act surprised when normal people object. They will ban accounts for wrongthink while the hardware that can film a six-year-old in a swimsuit keeps shipping. Law-and-order conservatives have long said predators go where the targets are. Public spaces with kids should not be open season for anyone with a few hundred dollars and a pair of smart glasses.
The solution is not complicated. Family beaches, playgrounds, pools, and similar locations should be able to ban the devices the same way they ban drones or cameras in locker rooms. States and localities can require clear, hard-to-defeat indicators or simply prohibit the recording function in designated family zones. Congress can treat the child-privacy implications with the same seriousness it claims to apply to online platforms. And Meta can stop pretending a tiny light equals real accountability.
Parents are already doing the work the elites will not. Detection apps exist. People are calling out the glasses in public. The Wall Street Apes video is only one example of the pushback. That pushback is healthy. American families do not owe Silicon Valley the benefit of the doubt when the product is a discreet camera pointed at their children.
Protect the kids first. The gadgets can wait.
