Viktor Liina, backed it up immediately: the navy has the assets and inter-agency coordination ready to inspect and detain vessels of “unfriendly nations” and their shadow fleets. Western ships flying third-country flags to move cargo in their own interest? Moscow notices.
This is not happening in a vacuum. For months, NATO allies have escalated maritime pressure on what they call Russia’s “shadow fleet” — the aging tankers that keep Russian oil moving outside the price-cap regime. France, the UK, Sweden, and Belgium have boarded or detained multiple vessels in 2026. The EU’s newest sanctions package formalizes the theft by allowing the sale of plundered cargo. Meanwhile, the same alliance is pushing deeper into the Arctic and Pacific, forming new blocs, and deploying or planning weapons systems that Moscow reads as direct threats. Putin noted the growing conflict potential from these “NATO inroads.”
Add the hybrid pressure: airspace probes that sent NATO jet scrambles on the eastern flank soaring more than 250% in July compared with the prior year, drone incidents near key European airports and Ukrainian cargo hubs, and repeated warnings from Baltic intelligence that Russia is preparing limited provocations — missiles, drones, sabotage — precisely to test NATO resolve and force a cut in support for Ukraine. Latvian officials have been clear: full-scale war is not imminent, but hybrid jabs designed to create “problems” for countries still pouring resources into the forever proxy fight are very much on the table.
This is classic poke-the-bear behavior. Europe’s globalist leadership and the leftover neocons in the alliance refuse to accept that the Ukraine war has become a meat grinder that has cost the West far more than it has delivered. Instead of seeking a realistic off-ramp that protects American interests and ends the bloodletting, they double down with high-seas seizures, sanctions that punish their own economies, and military posturing that raises the risk of direct confrontation. America First voters did not send Donald Trump back to the White House to underwrite European adventures that could spiral into a broader conflict.
Russia has absorbed the economic pain, adapted its oil trade, and is now signaling it will mirror the tactics. Tit-for-tat seizures of European-linked shipping, inspections of “unfriendly” vessels, and operations wherever Moscow chooses. The Pacific Fleet is already postured for it. When you treat international maritime law as optional for your side while demanding rigid compliance from the other, do not act shocked when the other side stops playing by the old rules.
The pattern is familiar: expand NATO, arm the proxy, seize assets, then act outraged when the target prepares reciprocal measures. At some point the bear stops growling and starts swinging. Europe’s current course is accelerating that moment. Real peace through strength and negotiated settlements — the MAGA approach — looks a lot wiser than endless escalation that risks American blood and treasure for European prestige projects. The Europeans press for war, yet without the United States’ military, they are a toothless tiger.
Keep in mind, folks, this is Russia. A nation more heavily armed with nukes and missiles than the U.S. is. The last thing this world needs is war.
