    From The Russians, a clip

A Ukrainian one-way attack drone closely missed two NATO fighter jets after it was shot down near an Estonian air base.

A Ukrainian drone carrying a significant explosive payload crossed into Bulgarian airspace early Saturday morning, exploded in a sunflower field near the Kardam border crossing with Romania, and came within about a kilometer of a compressor station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. That pipeline is part of the route moving gas northward, including toward Ukraine. No one was hurt. The infrastructure was untouched. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed the blast, the black smoke, and the fact that neither Bulgarian nor Romanian radar—nor NATO’s combined air operations center—picked the thing up while it was flying.

Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry examined the wreckage and said the preliminary analysis points to a “Maya” decoy drone, a type widely used by Ukrainian forces. Officials stressed there is currently no evidence the incident was intentional. Ukraine’s foreign ministry denied directing any assets toward Bulgaria and blamed the whole mess on Russia’s invasion. Sofia still summoned the Ukrainian ambassador.

This is not an isolated screw-up. Ukrainian long-range and decoy drones have a growing habit of wandering off course, failing to hit their intended Russian targets, and ending up in NATO airspace or territory instead. Electronic warfare, navigation errors, cheap construction, and the sheer volume of drones being launched all play roles. The Maya is designed as a decoy—to soak up air defenses and confuse radar—so when one of them decides to take a scenic tour through Romania and into Bulgaria, the result is predictable: another “unidentified” explosion near critical infrastructure that gets the war drums beating.

What is less predictable—unless you’ve been watching for years—is how quickly the mainstream media and certain officials default to blaming Russia. When debris falls in Poland, Romania, the Baltics, or Moldova, the first reflex from much of the Western press and political class is “Russian aggression,” “escalation,” “testing NATO.” The narrative writes itself: Putin is probing the alliance, civilians are at risk, more weapons and more money are urgently required. Only later, if at all, do the details emerge that the drone or rocket was Ukrainian, that it was knocked off course by jamming, or that it was a decoy that simply kept flying.

We’ve seen the pattern. A Russian Geran can genuinely stray or be deliberately sent. Ukrainian systems do the same. In past cases involving Romania and other neighbors, Ukrainian naval drones and aerial assets have crossed borders after losing control or after being affected by Russian electronic warfare. The 2022 Polish farm incident that killed two civilians was a Ukrainian rocket; initial finger-pointing still leaned hard toward Moscow in many quarters. When the facts are inconvenient, the coverage softens, the timelines stretch, and the “Russia did it” framing lingers in the public mind.

The Bulgaria case is useful precisely because the attribution came relatively quickly and from Bulgarian authorities themselves: Ukrainian Maya decoy. Yet the ZeroHedge framing and the broader conversation still sit inside a media environment that has spent years treating almost every border incident as evidence of Russian malign intent. That selective urgency is not neutral journalism. It is narrative maintenance. Keeping public and political support for the war effort requires a steady supply of threat. Accidental Ukrainian drones exploding near European energy infrastructure do not help that storyline as cleanly as “Russian drones attacking NATO.” So the blame often slides in the useful direction first.

None of this requires conspiracy theories about false flags, though the fog of war and the incentives on all sides make skepticism healthy. It requires only noticing that Ukrainian drones frequently fail to reach or accurately strike their targets, that spillover into neighboring states is now routine, and that the Western media apparatus has a consistent bias toward amplifying Russian responsibility while downplaying or delaying inconvenient Ukrainian ones. The result is a distorted picture that keeps the drums beating louder than the actual evidence sometimes warrants.

War is chaotic. Cheap drones make it more so. When the debris is Ukrainian and the pipeline is European, the honest response is to say so clearly and move on to better defenses and better targeting discipline. The media reflex to reach for the Russian villain first does the opposite of clarifying the picture. It keeps the fear machine running.
