Remember the hoodie-wearing, tattooed progressive darling who rode Bernie Sanders’ coattails into the Senate? The guy who once called himself a progressive and got the full endorsement treatment from the left’s favorite Vermont socialist?
Fast-forward to 2026, and John Fetterman is starting to look like the most intelligent Democrat left in the Senate.
That’s not hyperbole. While the rest of his party tiptoes around the radicals or actively courts them, Fetterman is saying the quiet part out loud: Bernie Sanders and the Democratic Socialists of America are installing volatile, anti-American candidates who put Democratic seats at risk.
In recent comments that Wall Street Apes rightly flagged as one of the most important things Fetterman’s ever said, the Pennsylvania senator unloaded:
“Bernie Sanders is helping install volatile and dangerous kinds of candidates, and now put Democratic seats at risk — I’m tired of his lectures — and now he claims that he’s not a member of the Democratic Party. Why can’t the DSA people just run as their own party?”
He didn’t stop there. Fetterman pointed out the obvious: Sanders has never represented more than about 640,000 people in deep-blue Vermont. He’s never flipped a competitive seat. Fetterman has. So spare us the lectures on how to win elections from the guy whose preferred candidates keep turning into train wrecks.
This is a remarkable transformation. The same man who once leaned hard into the progressive brand now rejects the label. He has become one of the few Democrats willing to police his own side’s growing Marxist wing instead of pretending the “dirtbag left” is just energetic young idealists.
Look at the track record. Fetterman has repeatedly hammered Sanders for backing Graham “P-Hustle” Platner in Maine — the candidate who collapsed under serious sexual assault allegations, a Nazi tattoo scandal, and a history of grotesque online posts. Fetterman demanded Sanders apologize to Maine voters and the alleged victims, calling Platner the kind of “predator” and “communist” the party should stop elevating. Sanders’ response? Essentially no regrets and more of the same.
Then there’s the DSA itself. Their updated “Workers Deserve More” platform reads like a fever dream from a college dorm room that never left 1968: replace the President and Supreme Court with bodies subordinate to Congress, abolish the Senate, fully abolish the police and prison system, abolish ICE, grant amnesty to all illegal immigrants, establish public ownership of major corporations, defund the Department of War, end aid to Israel while recognizing “Palestine” with Jerusalem as its capital, extend voting rights to noncitizens and the incarcerated, and enact reparations.
Fetterman has called this what it is — anarchy, anti-American, and anti-Western. He’s mocked the candidates wiping their hands on the American flag, grieving Hamas terrorists, and declaring war on “regular Democrats.” He’s labeled the rising New York crew (including figures around Zohran Mamdani) the “dirtbag left” and warned that the party is drifting into an “orgy of socialism.”
When almost every other Democrat stays silent or issues careful both-sides statements, Fetterman is willing to say the DSA people are not Democrats and should stop running under the party’s banner.
That’s not just politics. That’s pattern recognition. The Marxist wing doesn’t just lose general elections in competitive states — it actively makes the Democratic brand toxic to normal voters who still like borders, police, the Constitution, and not cheering for America’s enemies. Fetterman, the guy who flipped a Pennsylvania Senate seat, understands the math. Sanders, the lifelong socialist who never had to win a real swing contest, does not.
The early Fetterman was pure progressive energy. The current Fetterman has watched the left’s purity tests, the open hostility to Israel after October 7, the border chaos, and the embrace of candidates who sound more like campus radicals than people who could govern a mid-sized city. He’s adjusted accordingly while still claiming the core Democratic labels he cares about.
In a party increasingly dominated by people who treat the American system as the enemy, the tall guy in the hoodie is sounding like the adult in the room. That’s a hell of a plot twist — and one that should make every Democrat who still wants to win outside of deep-blue districts pay attention.
The nuts on the Marxist wing will call him a traitor. Regular Americans might just call him the rare Democrat who noticed the building was on fire.

End all military and economic aid to Israel; recognize a free Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital; prosecute U.S. and Israeli leaders for genocide in Gaza 8. Extend full voting rights to all permanent U.S. residents (including noncitizens) and restore voting rights for incarcerated people 9. Enact reparations
