Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones discusses why choosing to send her daughter, Najya, to predominantly Black, under-resourced public schools has sparked so much controversy. “My child was not sacrificed,” she said. “I deeply reject that framing. Did my child bear some sacrifices? Absolutely.” Hannah-Jones believed her upper-middle class family could use their resources to help improve the schools they sent Najya to. “We need to feel, I think, an obligation to each other. I will never be regretful that I cared about more than just my child, and neither will my husband.”
